Charcot's interest in faith healing.

Jean-Martin Charcot believed that "miraculous" cures followed the rules of nature and that the resolution of physical stigmata after pilgrimages to shrines followed the laws of physiology. He acknowledged that some of the patients he had failed to improve at La Salpêtrière had subsequently been cured by the "faith cure" at Lourdes, but he believed their recovery had occurred through "autosuggestion." Although this term is more commonly associated with his collaborator Pierre Janet, it is clearly expressed in Charcot's final pronouncements. Charcot's recognition of the neurological origin of hy

Cerebrospinal Fluid Leakage Following a Pseudo-Religious Faith Healing.

A 56-year-old man presented to the emergency room with a sudden onset of drowsiness that began 2 hours before his arrival. Brain computed tomography revealed massive pneumocephalus. The patient was diagnosed with cerebrospinal fluid leakage accompanied by septal perforation. A planned skull base repair was performed using multilayer reconstruction via a trans-septal approach. Following surgery, the patient's mental state recovered, and the skull base defect was successfully reconstructed. The patient disclosed that he had undergone faith healing sessions at a religious facility, where a metal

Called to Heal: Parallelisms Between the Catholic Faith and the Art of Medicine.

The medical profession and modern healthcare have their origins in Catholicism, with numerous influences and similarities between these two fields. Medicine is, in essence, a vocation the lay physician is called to, akin in many ways to the Catholic priest. This article seeks to explore the numerous associations between medicine and Catholicism, drawing upon previously described examples, and expounding upon comparisons and how they might apply to the Catholic lay physician. The parallelisms between the Catholic physician and priest, the operating room and the Mass, the clinic and the confessi

Overcoming Stigma in Women's HIV and Syphilis Care: The Role of Faith in Healing.

Point-of-care (POC) testing for syphilis and HIV is an effective way to provide same-day testing, results management, counseling, and treatment. Although commonly used in antenatal or sexual health clinics, our field study aimed to offer POC testing to women attending a standard care clinic in Guatemala. Nearly all women accepted testing, highlighting the patient-centered benefits and acceptability of screening in non-stigmatizing settings. Upon disclosure of results, especially positive diagnoses, patients drew comfort and resilience from their faith, an often-underprioritized resource not ty

Exploring the convergence of faith healing practices with biopsychosocial interventions for mental health: A qualitative study among faith healers in Madhya Pradesh, India.

BACKGROUND: Faith healing, a practice deeply rooted in cultural and religious beliefs, remains a significant healthcare approach worldwide, especially in regions like India, where mental health stigma is pervasive. Despite advances in psychiatric care, many individuals still seek the services of faith healers for mental health issues, delaying access to appropriate medical treatment. The study aims to understand the perspectives of Faith Healers on mental health, examine their practices and beliefs, and explore the feasibility of integrating faith healing with psychiatric care to enhance menta

Faith, food, and healing: a global cross-sectional study of knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to Islamic complementary and alternative foods and remedies.

The increasing interest in alternative and complementary treatments-particularly those referenced in Islamic sources, such as the Holy Qur'an and the Prophetic Sunnah (HQPS) - has led to their growing use as alternatives or adjuncts to modern evidence-based medicine. This global cross-sectional study examines the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of adult Muslims regarding the foods and remedies mentioned in the HQPS, along with their associated factors and determinants. An electronic questionnaire comprising twenty-seven questions was developed and verified for clarity. The study incl

Stillbirth And Faith: When Belief And Death Collide.

Mothers who had experienced stillbirth (n = 436) were asked about their "faith base" and whether it was "helpful to their healing." Only 178 (24.5%) indicated their faith base was "helpful;" there was also a wide range of other responses including those who indicated their faith was "lost" following their baby's death. Findings are discussed in terms of what participants found helpful from their pastor and/or church community.

Unchaining people with mental disorders: medication is not the solution.

Chaining of people with mental disorders, and their incarceration and abuse in prisons or mental hospitals, is an affront to psychiatry and humanity. Although mental healthcare always needs attention to cultural and social contexts, this must never be at the cost of allowing human rights violations to go unchallenged. A rights-based approach must enforce well-established international human rights conventions, and scale-up comprehensive community services around the needs and preferences of people affected by mental disorders. Declaration of interest None.

One novel virus, different beliefs as playmakers towards disease spread in Africa: looking at COVID-19 from a religious lens.

Religious and spiritual observances that draw large people together are pervasive in many parts of the world, including Africa. With the recent emergence of COVID-19, these mass religious gatherings may pose significant threats to human health. Given the compromised healthcare systems in many parts of Africa, faith-based institutions have a huge responsibility towards the management of the potential spread of the virus through effective organizational strategies or interventions. This essay sheds light on what the novel virus has to do with religion, the role of religious practices in inhibiti

Praying to win this battle: Cancer Metaphors in Latina and Spanish Women's Narratives.

This study closely examines 51 breast cancer narratives Latina and Spanish women wrote for other patients to illuminate how they conceptualize their health, with insights for addressing health disparities. Using discourse analysis of the role of language and culture in health care communication, this study focuses on the use of metaphors in the narratives. This provides revelations about the cultural and linguistic aspects of how the writers conceptualize their disease. Building on past research on metaphor use in cancer discourse in the English language, this study reveals the prevalence of m

Sacred Healing in Ancient Greece: The Asclepieia as Early Holistic Health Care Systems at the Intersection of Religion and Medicine.

The Asclepieia of ancient Greece functioned as healing sanctuaries in which religious ritual and therapeutic practice were closely intertwined. They did not constitute a clear separation between religion and medicine, as they embodied one of the most structured forms of ritualized healing in the classical world, in which ritual and empirical medicine operated side by side. Drawing on archaeological, epigraphic, historical, and medical-historical evidence, this narrative review examines the therapeutic, organizational, and symbolic dimensions of the Asclepieia as early models of holistic health

Healing options during the plague: survivor stories from a fourteenth-century canonization inquest.

Witness testimonies in the 1363 canonization inquest for Countess Delphine de Puimchel help us explore differing reactions to the first two waves of plague in 1348 and 1361, the diverse social and healing networks available to the sick, and the importance of affect in the healing process. Every witness in the inquest had lived through both the 1348 and 1361 epidemics. Their testimonies show that sufferers actively sought out healing even when they feared that none existed, healing practitioners continued to care for the sick through both waves of epidemic, and emotion played an important role

Perceptions of traditional healing for mental illness in rural Gujarat.

BACKGROUND: Despite the significant toll of mental illness on the Indian population, resources for patients often are scarce, especially in rural areas. Traditional healing has a long history in India and is still widely used, including for mental illnesses. However, its use has rarely been studied systematically. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the perspective of patients, their families, and healthy community members toward faith healing for mental illness, including the type of interventions received, perceptions of its efficacy, and overall satisfaction with the process.

The tale of a city saved by gout and a letter from Jesus.

In the 6th century a Persian invasion of the eastern provinces of the Roman empire resulted in the devastation of several cities. Edessa alone was spared, and it was widely believed that this city had divine protection because of postal communication over 5 centuries earlier between its gouty ruler and Jesus Christ. These events are reviewed in detail herein. Some appear to have a well-documented historic basis but others, including the letter from Jesus, have been considered highly questionable by various authorities. The story provides an interesting connection between gout and historic even

St. Francis came at dawn--the miraculous recovery of a hemiplegic monk in the Middle Ages.

We present the English translation of a remarkable case report from the 13th century. A collection of miracles ascribed to St. Francis contains the story of a young monk suddenly afflicted by a neurological disorder characterized by hemiplegia, speech problems and confusion. St. Francis' appearance led to complete recovery. From a theological and literary point of view, the text includes many allusions to the miracles performed by Jesus and to pagan traditions from Asclepius to Ovid. Retrospective neurological diagnoses range from a prolonged ischemic neurological deficit (PRIND) to psychogene
