Nondriving aging adults are at risk of experiencing mobility barriers that inhibit access to important community resources for managing health and wellbeing. This multimethod study explores bus transportation experiences of older adults who live in extended stay hotels and use faith-based organizations to access resources. Interviews from 17 nondriving older adults were analyzed for perspectives about using faith-based organizations and residents' experiences navigating to faith-based organizations through available bus transportation in their communities. Residents described both favorable an

PURPOSE: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is poorly diagnosed with millions unaware they have the condition, preventing or delaying treatment and behavioral changes. We partnered with faith-based organizations (FBOs) to raise awareness of COPD among Black Americans by facilitating diagnosis and offering self-management education in the community.
METHODS: Cross-sectional and pre-post study designs were applied. Three churches identified representatives to serve as COPD liaisons (CLs). CLs received training on screening procedures and an overview of COPD. Case-finding was conducted

OBJECTIVES: After Hurricane Ida, faith-based organizations were vital to disaster response. However, this community resource remains understudied. This exploratory study examines local faith-based organizational involvement in storm recovery by evaluating response activities, prevalence and desire for formal disaster education, coordination with other organizations, effect of storm damage on response, and observations for future response.
METHODS: An exploratory survey was administered to community leaders throughout the Bayou Region of Louisiana consisting of questions regarding demographics

OBJECTIVE: This study examined use of depression care provided by faith-based organizations (FBOs) by African Americans and Hispanics and factors associated with the receipt of such care, including mental illness severity and use of traditional mental health services.
METHODS: The study used baseline data from the Community Partners in Care study, a group-randomized trial comparing a community-partnered approach with a technical-assistance approach to improving depression care in underresourced communities in Los Angeles. A sample of 947 individuals (48% African American, 27% non-U.S.-born Hi

BACKGROUND: Faith-based organizations (FBOs) have a long history of providing health services in developing countries and are important contributors to healthcare systems. Support for the wellbeing of women, children, and families is evidenced through active participation in the field of family planning (FP). However, there is little quantitative evidence on the availability or quality of FP services by FBOs.
METHODS: The descriptive analysis uses facility-level data collected through recent Service Provision Assessments in Malawi (2013-14), Kenya (2010), and Haiti (2012) to examine 11 indica

BACKGROUND: Latinas face significant barriers to engaging in physical activity (PA), contributing to disproportionately high rates of chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. This study takes a unique approach by evaluating the implementation of Faith in Action (Fe en Acción), a multilevel, faith-based evidence-based intervention to increase moderate-to-vigorous PA among Latinas. More specifically, Aim 1 tests the short- and long-term impacts of organization-level implementation strategies at 6- and 12-month post-baseline. Aim 2 evaluates individual-level reach a

Volunteers are increasingly being relied upon to provide home-based care for people living with AIDS in South Africa and this presents several unique challenges specific to the HIV/AIDS context in Africa. Yet it is not clear what motivates people to volunteer as home-based caregivers. Drawing on the functional theory on volunteer motivations, this study uses data from qualitative interviews with 57 volunteer caregivers of people living with HIV/AIDS in six semi-rural South African communities to explore volunteer motivations. Findings revealed complex motivations underlying volunteering in AID

BACKGROUND: The 2014 Consensus Conference on Best Practices in Living Kidney Donations recognized live donor kidney transplantation as the best treatment for late-stage kidney disease, yielding superior graft and patient survival, improved quality of life, fewer requirements for dialysis and increased cost-effectiveness compared to deceased donor kidney transplantation. Yet in spite of the excellent results of living kidney donation, the annual number of living kidney donors is declining in many countries, including the United States. BACKGROUND: Many residents of the Bronx are from West Africa where chronic hepatitis B is endemic. Hepatitis B screening is low in West African immigrant communities due to multiple possible cultural and socioeconomic factors.
METHODS: A culturally sensitive educational program on hepatitis B with a special emphasis on the relevance for the West African community was developed. Arrangements were made with leaders of West African faith-based organizations to conduct educational programs following religious services after which a survey was completed to assess changes in attitudes towards the i

Chlamydia and gonorrhea rates among African American youths in San Francisco are far higher than those among young people of the city's other racial and ethnic groups. A geographically targeted sexually transmitted disease education and screening intervention performed in collaboration with a local faith-based organization was able to screen hundreds of at-risk youths. The screened individuals included friends and sex partners from an extensive social-sexual network that transcended the boundaries of the target population. The intervention also provided an excellent opportunity to practice "st

Childhood obesity disproportionately affects Hispanic children, yet culturally responsive interventions within faith-based organizations remain underutilized. This formative study explored faith leaders' perspectives on promoting healthy eating to inform church-based obesity prevention in predominantly Hispanic congregations. Using a qualitative-dominant mixed-methods design guided by Community-Based Participatory Research principles, we conducted surveys and in-depth interviews with faith leaders from diverse Arkansas denominations, including 30 who participated in interviews. Participants de

BACKGROUND: In King County, Washington, the new HIV diagnosis rate is 10 times higher among African immigrants than the general population. Many African immigrants report never testing for HIV due to various reasons, including inaccessible testing, stigma around HIV and testing, and concerns over jeopardizing their immigration status.
OBJECTIVES: We partnered with the Ethiopian Community in Seattle, the Eritrean Health Board, and the Congolese United Foundation to deliver community-based HIV testing via health fairs at faith-based organizations in King County. We also worked to address commun

Organizations that interact with children and young people have a duty of care to ensure the safety of those children and young people from any manner of abuse, particularly from child sexual abuse. Faith-based ("religious") organizations are of particular interest due to the number of victims/survivors speaking out about their experiences of grooming, child sexual abuse, and other forms of harm in religious organizations. Focusing on addressing the risks and improving safeguarding efforts, prevention activities benefit from giving children agency and a voice. We conducted a study using two fo

INTRODUCTION: Voluntary, Community, Social, and Faith Enterprise (VCSFE) organisations play a vital role in supporting local health and care needs, particularly among underserved communities. However, they can often operate in isolation, making it difficult for vulnerable populations to access coordinated support. Luton Public Health led a pilot called the Collaboration Fund that encouraged joint working among selected VCSFE organisations, delivering services that tackle health inequalities. The evaluation of the Collaboration Fund assessed the impact, effectiveness, and sustainability of this

This paper investigates the role of Islamic faith-based organisations (FBOs) in Indonesia and examines the way in which their disaster recovery aid can be successful or less successful depending on social capital formation in communities affected by a disaster. The paper argues that Islamic FBOs play a prominent role in disaster-affected communities by building new social capital or strengthening existing social capital. Failure to do so may affect a community's recovery and its long-term resilience. Applying a framework that considers three types of social capital-bonding, bridging, and linki

Religious and spiritual observances that draw large people together are pervasive in many parts of the world, including Africa. With the recent emergence of COVID-19, these mass religious gatherings may pose significant threats to human health. Given the compromised healthcare systems in many parts of Africa, faith-based institutions have a huge responsibility towards the management of the potential spread of the virus through effective organizational strategies or interventions. This essay sheds light on what the novel virus has to do with religion, the role of religious practices in inhibiti

Could faith-based food pantries evolve into vital multiservice health centers? In the United States, the South Bronx is the poorest urban congressional district in New York State and experiences significant food insecurity alongside pronounced public health disparities. While food pantries provide nutritional support temporarily, they rarely address the complex social determinants of health that contribute to chronic disease. This paper examines the feasibility, opportunities, and systemic barriers associated with transforming faith-based food operations into integrated, culturally sensitive h

Rural populations in the USA face higher rates of cardiovascular disease (CVD) incidence and mortality relative to non-rural and often lack access to health-promoting evidence-based interventions (EBIs) to support CVD prevention and management. Partnerships with faith organizations offer promise for translating preventative EBIs in rural communities; however, studies demonstrating effective translation of EBIs in these settings are limited. We used the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) and a multiple case study approach to understand the role of internal organizational

HIV/AIDS disproportionately impacts underserved communities in the USA. This study evaluated the acceptability of partnering with faith communities to improve HIV prevention, screening, and engagement in care with a focus on Hispanic/Latinx (H/L) communities. We engaged faith-based leaders to identify how the cultural competence and foundations of trust within these communities may be leveraged to improve HIV-related healthcare access for underserved groups including H/L individuals. Using a semi-structured qualitative interview approach, we interviewed N = 20 faith-based leaders in Providence

Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse: Prevention Programs and Safeguarding Concepts in the Context of Sports, Musical Education, and Religious Organizations Prevalence rates of child sexual abuse by caregivers in private and non-public institutions underscore the need for implementing safeguarding concepts. However, factors driving the implementation of prevention and safeguarding in the field are not well understood. What supportive and inhibiting factors can be identified in the implementation of safeguarding concepts and prevention programs? Content analysis of semi-structured interviews with p
