Family versus individual therapy for anorexia: impact on family conflict.

This study evaluated the impact on family relations of behavioral family systems therapy (BFST) versus ego-oriented individual therapy (EOIT) as treatments for adolescents with anorexia nervosa. Twenty-two adolescents meeting DSM-III-R anorexia nervosa criteria were randomly assigned to receive approximately 16 months of either BFST or EOIT along with a common medical and dietary regimen. BFST emphasized parental control over eating, cognitive restructuring, and problem-solving communication training. EOIT emphasized building ego strength, adolescent autonomy, and insight. Measures including b

FAMILY CONFLICT MODERATES EARLY PARENT-CHILD BEHAVIORAL TRANSACTIONS.

The reciprocal transactions that shape early parent-child relationships are influenced by contextual stress, such as family conflict. Although family conflict is a salient stressor to the family system, few studies have considered how parent-child transactions vary according to exposure to family conflict. The present study examined how family conflict alters early parent-child behavioral transactions. We utilized three waves of data from a multisite longitudinal study of low-income families (N = 2, 876), child age 14 months, 24 months, and 36 months, to identify behavioral transactions of pos

Family planning clinics--a story of growth and conflict.

During the 1960s, as demand for effective contraceptives increased and women expressed a desire for smaller families, an "odd lot" of groups came together to press for federally supported family planning services for low-income women. The drive culminated in 1970 with the passage of Title X of the Public Health Service Act, which authorized the funds that fed a network of family planning clinics. At the height of the national family planning program, approximately 2,500 agencies were operating clinics at more than 5,000 sites, providing services annually to almost five million patients. As par

Family to work conflict and the usefulness of workplace support.

BACKGROUND: While much is known about the effect of work stress on an employee's home life, less is known about the opposite effect, that of domestic worries upon work performance. AIMS: To investigate employee perceptions about the effect of family to work conflict (FWC) on work. METHODS: An online anonymous survey tool was developed and sent to all employees reporting to a single onsite human resources (HR) department at a UK research and development plant. FWC included family and other domestic stressors. Work effects studied included those on business travel, work performance and the awa

Young people, drug use and family conflict: pathways into homelessness.

Young people who experience homelessness, in Australia and in other western contexts (US, Canada, England), are widely perceived to use and abuse alcohol and drugs. The available research indicates that homeless young people use all drug types, whether injected or otherwise, more frequently than their home-based peers. Debate exists in the research and policy literature about whether drug use is a cause or consequence of homelessness. In a study exploring homeless young peoples reasons for leaving home, we examined the relationship between young people's drug use and their pathways into homele

How does employee-GenAI collaboration affect employees' work-family conflict?

BackgroundThe increasing integration of generative artificial intelligence into organizational work is reshaping how employees perform tasks and share decision authority with technology. However, existing research has predominantly examined the consequences of human-AI collaboration within the work domain, leaving its implications for employees' family lives less understood.ObjectiveDrawing on cognitive appraisal theory, this study examines how two distinct forms of employee-GenAI collaboration generate divergent cross-domain consequences and investigates job insecurity as an underlying psycho

A meta-analytic evaluation of the reliability of work-family and family-work conflict scales.

In occupational psychology, measuring the interplay between work and family roles is crucial. The Work-family conflict (WFC) and Family-Work Conflict (FWC) scales are indispensable tools in this endeavour. However, their reliability across diverse geographical locations and work settings, particularly during the global pandemic, requires thorough examination. This meta-analysis evaluates the reliability generalisation of WFC and FWC scales across different studies. Registered with PROSPERO (ID: CRD42024509030), we systematically searched four major databases: EBSCOhost, Web of Science, Scopus,

Perceived family instability, involvement in interparental conflict, and depression in adolescents.

Family instability and involvement in interparental conflict have long been identified as risk factors for adolescent depression; however, adolescent perceptions may be an underexamined measure of family instability which could produce cascading effects toward depressive symptoms. Altered perceptions due to cognitive maturation and puberty may make adolescents particularly attuned to deviations in the stability of the family system. Moreover, their involvement in parents' conflicts may further amplify their vulnerability to these stressful environmental experiences and increase their likelihoo

Registration of family vital events in a conflict-induced displacement setting.

BACKGROUND: In many low- and middle-income countries, the registration of family-related vital events (marriages and births) remains incomplete, with consequences for women's and their children's ability to exercise fundamental rights. In humanitarian and displacement settings, the absence of documentation creates additional barriers to legal recognition, identification and protection, especially if the population is already at risk of statelessness, as in the case of the Rohingya, a minority ethnic group that has experienced genocide. DATA AND METHODS: Drawing on unique primary survey data c

Work-family conflict and neck and back pain in surgical nurses.

OBJECTIVE: Surgical nurses' work is physically and mentally demanding, possibly leading to work-family conflict (WFC). The current study tests WFC to be a risk factor for neck and lower back pain (LBP). Job influence and social support are tested as resources that could buffer the detrimental impact of WFC. METHODS: Forty-eight surgical nurses from two university hospitals in Germany and Switzerland were recruited. WFC was assessed with the Work-Family Conflict Scale. Job influence and social support were assessed with the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire, and back pain was assessed with

Inner Conflict: Internal Family Systems Informed Communication for Serious Illness Care.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a psychotherapeutic model that conceptualizes human experience as shaped by different internal "parts" that respond to stress, threat, and vulnerability in patterned ways. In the setting of serious illness, these parts may become increasingly polarized or extreme, contributing to rigidity, ambivalence, emotional narrowing, or disengagement. By integrating IFS principles with serious illness communication, palliative care clinicians can better understand these responses as protective rather than pathological. This article uses a clinical case to illustrate how a

Spousal Problems and Family-to-Work Conflict Among Employed US Adults.

Using data from the 2011 National Survey of Midlife Development in the United States Refreshed Sample (N = 980), this paper examines how three types of spousal problems-poor physical health, poor mental health, and behavioral disorders-are related to respondents' family-to-work conflict (FWC) among employed adults aged 25-61. Results suggest that all three types of their spouses' problems were related to respondents' higher FWC, with their spouses' poor mental health having the strongest association. These associations were not significant after controlling for respondents' role overload, fina

Family conflict moderates response to pharmacological intervention in pediatric bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Family conflict affects the expression of psychopathology in youth. This study investigated whether family conflict moderates response to medication in youth with bipolar disorder. METHODS: Youth ages 5-17 years diagnosed with bipolar I or II disorder were recruited from a trial of combination therapy with divalproex and lithium. Mania and depression were assessed at baseline and after 8 weeks of treatment using the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) and the Children's Depression Rating Scale-Revised (CDRS-R). Parents completed the Family Assessment Device (FAD). Ordinary least-square

Family processes that shape the impact of interparental conflict on adolescents.

This study draws on the family systems concepts of triangulation and wholism to investigate how interparental conflict may affect adolescents' psychological adjustment. An ethnically and socioeconomically diverse sample (N = 388) of 14- to 18-year-olds completed measures of interparental conflict, family relationships, internalizing problems, and externalizing problems. We found that triangulation into parental disagreements mediated the association between parental conflict and both internalizing and externalizing problems. Adolescents exposed to more frequent, intense, and poorly resolved co

Cohesion and conflict: family influences on adolescent alcohol use in immigrant Latino families.

This study examines how cohesion and parent–child conflict relate to alcohol use among Mexican-heritage adolescents. The sample consists of 120 adolescents (14 to 18 years) participants from the Southwest sub-sample of the Latino Acculturation and Health Project. Lifetime and recent alcohol use and binge drinking were tested. Results from the logistic regressions identified high and low levels of family cohesion as a risk factor for alcohol use compared to medium levels of cohesion, and parent–child conflict predicted lifetime use and binge drinking. Low and high family cohesion levels appear

Work-to-family conflict and family role performance among employed adult child caregivers: A moderated mediation model.

Work-to-family conflict has significant implications for adult child caregivers and the older parents they care for, and cultural values such as filial piety play a critical role in shaping these dynamics. By integrating the work-home resources model with the dual filial piety framework, this study offers a novel perspective on how filial piety shapes the resource-depletion processes linking work-to-family conflict with family role performance. We conducted two empirical studies to test our hypotheses. Study 1 employed a time-lagged survey design and included 292 full-time employees who regula
