Family therapy with a multiparental/multispousal family.

This article examines therapy with a Bedouin-Arab family from the Negev, Israel, which consisted of 69 members: a husband, 8 wives, and 60 siblings. The husband, who lived with his youngest wife, paid little attention to his other wives and their children. There was considerable competition, hostility, and jealousy among the wives; no communication between the co-wives or the children of different wives; and a variety of behavioral and psychosocial problems among family members. I describe the varied strategies and systems involved in family therapy. The main strategies were to establish good

Evaluation of family therapy.

Because children of mentally disordered parents have an increased risk of becoming subjects of mental disorder and psychological problems, adult psychiatry has increasingly paid attention to the patients' parental skills. This study includes 31 families with children younger than 18 years of age where the parents were admitted to family therapy in an open psychiatric ward. The average number of sessions was seven, and the diagnoses of severe stress and of adjustment disorder were the most common. The aim of the study was to measure changes in the family climate during the period of therapy. Th

Which family--what therapy: Maori culture, families and family therapy in New Zealand.

New Zealand is a relatively young and small country which has seen steady migration for nearly seven centuries. Despite a long history of rivalry and hostility between Maori and European values, the country has also seen some significant synergism between the two cultures. For the last three decades Asians have also migrated at a significant pace. The country faces the challenge of delivering quality mental health services to such cultures which are bifurcated in being socio-centric (Maori, Pacific Islanders and Asian total 32% combined) or ego-centric (European total 68%). Significant progres

Family Presence During Electroconvulsive Therapy.

BACKGROUND: The practice of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is often hampered by stigma and myths prevailing among patients and families. Family attendance at ECT has not been systematically studied. METHODS: From January 2017 to May 2018, 69 consecutive patients were approached for family attendance at ECT. The inclusion criteria for entry to the ECT suite were consent from families and patients, age older than 18 years, and 1 family member at a time. After watching ECT, family members completed a multiple-choice questionnaire regarding their experience. RESULTS: Twenty-one family members w

[Transcultural aspects of family therapy].

The transcultural view is evident throughout all of Positive Family-Therapy. It helps us to understand the individual conflicts and can also be important in dealing with such social issues as the treatment of illegal aliens and refugees, foreign aid for the Third World countries, problems in dealing with members of other cultural systems, interracial and transcultural marriages, prejudices, alternative life-styles societies and political problems. 4 ways of dealing with conflict and the 5-stage Positive Family-Therapy are therapeutic strategies in which therapy and self-help are intertwined.

Family Systems Intelligence in Couple and Family Therapy-And Beyond.

This paper introduces family systems intelligence as a capacity that extends beyond emotional intelligence to how individuals understand and respond effectively to family challenges in ways that foster personal and relational health. After defining the general concept of systems intelligence, we define family systems intelligence and distinguish between dyadic and multilateral levels. We argue that couple therapy models are sometimes insufficient when couples face issues involving broader family systems. We illustrate these ideas in three domains where third-party dynamics are central: stepfam

Family versus individual therapy for anorexia: impact on family conflict.

This study evaluated the impact on family relations of behavioral family systems therapy (BFST) versus ego-oriented individual therapy (EOIT) as treatments for adolescents with anorexia nervosa. Twenty-two adolescents meeting DSM-III-R anorexia nervosa criteria were randomly assigned to receive approximately 16 months of either BFST or EOIT along with a common medical and dietary regimen. BFST emphasized parental control over eating, cognitive restructuring, and problem-solving communication training. EOIT emphasized building ego strength, adolescent autonomy, and insight. Measures including b

Family therapy approaches for anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is characterised by a failure to maintain a normal body weight due to a paucity of nutrition, an intense fear of gaining weight or behaviour that prevents the individual from gaining weight, or both. The long-term prognosis is often poor, with severe developmental, medical and psychosocial complications, high rates of relapse and mortality. 'Family therapy approaches' indicate a range of approaches, derived from different theories, that involve the family in treatment. We have included therapies developed on the basis of dominant family systems theories, appro

Family therapy for autism spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are characterised by impairments in communication and reciprocal social interaction. These impairments can impact on relationships with family members, augment stress and frustration, and contribute to behaviours that can be described as challenging. Family members of individuals with ASD can experience high rates of carer stress and burden, and poor parental efficacy. While there is evidence to suggest that individuals with ASD and family members derive benefit from psychological interventions designed to reduce stress and mental health morbidity,

Family therapy of extrafamilial sexual abuse.

A significant portion of children referred for psychiatric treatment have been sexually abused. One of the most difficult symptom manifestations to treat in young children is the management of anger. In this case, a 4-year-old boy was sexually abused by persons outside the family. He showed symptoms of regressive behavior including encopresis, enuresis, difficulty sleeping, fearfulness, recurrent nightmares, and had hyperalertness and frequent outbursts of anger. Treatment initially involved group therapy, with a concurrent parents' group. After experiencing little improvement in group therapy

Patient- and Family-Centered Electroconvulsive Therapy.

This article builds upon prior efforts to improve the quality of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) practice and care by encouraging the participation of family members in the ECT process. This participation included the presence of a family member or significant other (SO) in the treatment room during the ECT procedure. Suggestions for limiting that presence to the induction process and for providing limited physical contact with the patient are proposed. The participation of the SO during the pretreatment assessment process is encouraged. Because of possible impairment of memory and judgment, a

Families post-release: Barriers and pathways to family therapy.

Family therapy has helped repair relational ruptures and restore stability within families for decades. However, service can be inaccessible and underutilized among many minoritized and stigmatized groups, including families post-release. Harmful sociocultural and relational experiences pose considerable risks to families before, during, and after incarceration. While not exhaustive, this article highlights potential attitudinal, relational, and logistical obstacles to family therapy engendered by therapists, clients, or both. Feasible and accessible clinically oriented conceptual and practica

Structural family therapy: its application to Chinese families.

In summary, it can be stated that structural family therapy, for a variety of reasons, offers an appropriate treatment model for dysfunctional Chinese families. Since the family, not the individual, is the more important unit in Chinese culture, the model offers the opportunity for the total family to participate in changing dysfunctional individual and family patterns. The model focuses upon structure, which is the essence of the Chinese family. In addition, it is problem- and growth-oriented, creates a nondefensive atmosphere in which family members can change, and works toward helping famil

Enzyme Replacement Therapy in a Gaucher Family.

Gaucher disease is a lipid storage disorder due to deficiency of beta glucocerebrosidase. It's an autosomal recessive disease and as a result of this enzyme deficiency, glucocerebroside accumulates in various types of tissues like liver, brain spleen and bone marrow. We aimed to describe the effects of enzyme replacement therapy in three members of a family with Gaucher disease and to emphasize screening of the family members of the patients with Gaucher disease. Furthermore, late diagnosis and treatment in these patients have a minimal effect on improvement of the quality of life, and early d

Family cognitive remediation therapy for anorexia nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) in childhood and adolescence has a poor prognosis. It is possible that this may in part be due to the fact that cognitive weaknesses that appear to be risk factors for its development and maintenance are not being targeted in treatment. Through its focus on these deficits, cognitive remediation therapy (CRT) has been shown to be a promising intervention for AN. Furthermore, family interventions are widely recommended for this patient population, but to date no studies have reported the use of CRT in a family setting. This paper presents a case series in which family-based

The FGF family: biology, pathophysiology and therapy.

The family of fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) regulates a plethora of developmental processes, including brain patterning, branching morphogenesis and limb development. Several mitogenic, cytoprotective and angiogenic therapeutic applications of FGFs are already being explored, and the recent discovery of the crucial roles of the endocrine-acting FGF19 subfamily in bile acid, glucose and phosphate homeostasis has sparked renewed interest in the pharmacological potential of this family. This Review discusses traditional applications of recombinant FGFs and small-molecule FGF receptor kinase in
