Famous persons with epilepsy - Trends and patterns in the medical literature.

This review analyzes 155 papers published between 1966 and 2025 examining epilepsy in 108 famous persons (see Supplementary Material for complete list), using the PubMed "famous persons" MeSH term combined with epilepsy-related search terms. Vincent van Gogh (37 papers, 23.9 %) and Fyodor Dostoevsky (34 papers, 21.9 %) dominated the literature, together accounting for 45.8 % of all publications. Writers and artists received the most scholarly attention, with 72.3 % of papers published after 2000. Most papers discussed epilepsy generally without specifying type, while temporal lobe epilepsy was

Comprehension of famous personal and geographical names in global aphasic subjects.

This experiment compared comprehension of famous personal and geographical names with that of common nouns in three groups of severe aphasic subjects across three modalities. Results revealed that the global aphasic group comprehended famous personal names significantly better than they did common nouns and were better in the reading comprehension modality. Comprehension of famous geographical names in the global aphasic group, however, was as impaired as that of common nouns. CT images suggested that the left occipital lobe and the left posterior inferior temporal gyrus, as well as the right

Preservation of famous person knowledge in a patient with severe post anoxic amnesia.

A 58 year old patient (ES) suffered severe anterograde and retrograde amnesia following prolonged cardiac arrest with presumed hypoxic brain damage. Personally relevant autobiographical memory was severely impaired as was knowledge of public events. In contrast, knowledge of famous people was very well preserved. This findings has implications for the organisation of remote memory. Knowledge of people is clearly represented independently from autobiographical memory. We argue that this pattern of profound autobiographical amnesia may result from either multifocal neocortical damage (as in this

Neural correlates of recognition and naming of famous persons and landmarks: A special role for the left anterior temporal lobe.

The anterior temporal lobes (ATLs) have been shown to be crucial for recognition and naming of unique entities such as persons and places. In this chapter, we review previous research that identified the neural underpinnings of these processes, and discuss the convergence zone theory of conceptual knowledge and proper name retrieval. Lesion-deficit and neuroimaging studies have found that the temporal poles are essential for recognition and naming of unique persons and places. Research has shown laterality, in that the right anterior temporal pole is specialized for recognition and the left fo

Person identity-specific adaptation effects in the ventral occipito-temporal cortex.

Identifying the faces of familiar persons requires the ability to assign several different images of a face to a common identity. Previous research showed that the occipito-temporal cortex, including the fusiform and the occipital face areas, is sensitive to personal identity. Still, the viewpoint, facial expression and image-independence of this information are currently under heavy debate. Here we adapted a rapid serial visual stimulation paradigm Johnston et al. (2016, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cortex.2016.10.002) and presented highly variable ambient-face images of famous persons to measur

Detecting a familiar person behind the surgical mask: recognition without identification among masked versus sunglasses-covered faces.

Previous research has shown that even when famous people's identities cannot be discerned from faces that have been filtered with monochromatic noise, these unidentifiable famous faces still tend to receive higher familiarity ratings than similarly filtered non-famous faces. Experiment 1 investigated whether a similar face recognition without identification effect would occur among faces whose identification was hindered through the wearing of a surgical mask. Among a mixture of famous and non-famous faces wearing surgical masks and hoods, participants rated how familiar each person seemed the

Retrograde amnesia: a study of its relation to anterograde amnesia and semantic memory deficits.

This group study of 24 amnesic patients and 40 control subjects examined the hypothesis that retrograde memory deficits result from a combination of two impairment mechanisms: (1) a deficit in the retrieval of contents that is related to dysfunctioning of the hippocampal anterograde memory system, and (2) a deficit in the storage and/or retrieval of contents that is related to concomitant neocortical lesions. Retrograde amnesia was evaluated with the use of new Famous Persons and Autobiographical Memory Tests. The postulated components of retrograde memory impairment were assessed using the We

The fractionation of retrograde amnesia.

This single case study describes our investigations of the retrograde memory deficit of a patient who became severely and selectively amnesic after an encephalitic illness. On clinical assessment his retrograde deficit for both personal and public events appeared to encompass his entire adult life. However, he retained knowledge of words introduced into the vocabulary during the retrograde period. The experimental investigation documented his inability to recall, recognize, and place in temporal order the names and faces of famous people for all time periods sampled. By contrast, his recall of

Common neural systems associated with the recognition of famous faces and names: an event-related fMRI study.

Person recognition can be accomplished through several modalities (face, name, voice). Lesion, neurophysiology and neuroimaging studies have been conducted in an attempt to determine the similarities and differences in the neural networks associated with person identity via different modality inputs. The current study used event-related functional-MRI in 17 healthy participants to directly compare activation in response to randomly presented famous and non-famous names and faces (25 stimuli in each of the four categories). Findings indicated distinct areas of activation that differed for faces

The Transformation of Mohamed Atta: The Relevance of Personality in Radicalization.

This is a single-case study of Mohammed Atta that utilizes Theodore Millon's model of personality disorders to explore Atta's transformation from a markedly shy, sensitive, and gentle person who abhorred fanaticism and violence into one of the leaders of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. First, a brief review of Atta's life and personality is presented. This is followed by a delineation of three possible pathways that could explain his transformation. These pathways include what Millon identified as a puritanical compulsive personality, a selfless dependent personality, and a spineless denigrating p

Identification of famous faces and famous names in early Alzheimer's disease. Relationship to anterograde episodic and general semantic memory.

We assessed remote memory in 33 patients with dementia of Alzheimer's type (DAT) with Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores between 17 and 30, and 30 matched controls using a Famous Faces Test and Famous Names Test designed to assess face recognition, identification and naming, and name recognition and identification, respectively, together with a range of anterograde episodic and semantic memory tests. Patients with DAT were impaired on all components of the remote memory tests, i.e. famous face recognition, identification and naming, and famous name recognition and identification. Ther

Remote memory and lexical retrieval in a case of frontal Pick's disease.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the status of remote memory and lexical retrieval processes in a patient with frontal lobe-type dementia studied serially during an 18-month period. DESIGN: Longitudinal single-case study. SETTING: University hospital. PATIENT: A 67-year-old man presented to the hospital with progressive frontal lobe dysfunction confirmed by neuropsychological testing and single photon emission-computed tomographic scan. Postmortem brain examination demonstrated focal atrophy of the orbitofrontal region of the frontal lobe and medial temporal structures with abundant Pick's bodies and

Electrocorticography reveals the dynamics of famous voice responses in human fusiform gyrus.

Voice and face processing occur through convergent neural systems that facilitate speaker recognition. Neuroimaging studies suggest that familiar voice processing engages early visual cortex, including the bilateral fusiform gyrus (FG) on the basal temporal lobe. However, what role the FG plays in voice processing and whether it is driven by bottom-up or top-down mechanisms is unresolved. In this study we directly examined neural responses to famous voices and faces in human FG with direct cortical surface recordings (electrocorticography) in epilepsy surgery patients. We tested the hypothesis

Prosopagnosia and alexia without object agnosia.

Following a trauma causing bilateral posterior brain damage, a patient complained of dyslexia and prosopagnosia, but not object agnosia. On testing she showed intact recognition of object drawings, even when it was assessed with perceptually demanding tasks such as Ghent's overlapping figures and Street completion test. This pattern of deficit is inconsistent with Farah's (1990) prediction that the simultaneous occurrence of alexia and prosopagnosia is invariably associated with object agnosia. The patient's reading performance had the features typically found in letter-by-letter readers. On f

Cerebral processing of proper and common nouns: Perception and production following left hemisphere damage.

The goal of this study was to further investigate hemispheric specialization for proper and common nouns by examining the ability of individuals with left hemisphere damage (LHD) to perceive and verbally reproduce famous names and matched common names compared with the performance of matched healthy controls (HC). Ten individuals with LHD due to stroke and 16 age- and education-matched HC completed recognition and production tasks of famous proper and common nouns. All tasks were designed as split-visual field experiments, modelled after the study done by Ohnesorge and Van Lancker. Results con
