Children of alcoholics are often viewed as having major psychological problems resulting from their interactions within disturbed family structures. Most studies, however, have selected alcoholics from multiproblem families in which it is difficult to disentangle the impact of alcoholism from concomitant psychosocial and psychiatric problems. Further, few studies have used psychometrically sound measures of alcoholism or child functioning. In this investigation, children of alcoholic, depressed and control (social drinkers and not depressed) fathers were assessed by parents on the Child Behavi

When the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had their baby, the new father was with his wife and baby until they left the hospital. No suggestion that he should be pushed out at this very sensitive time. Does this mean that to be given the opportunity to bond with his baby, a father must either be royal or rich? This article examines the policy of sending fathers away from their newly born baby and partner, especially when they are very young or vulnerable. The suggestion is that 24 hour visiting should apply to fathers, thus circumventing the problems with providing accommodation for them.

PURPOSE: Fathers are prone to suboptimal bonding with their preterm infants, but little is known about the roles that father and infant variables might play in the suboptimal bonding. This gap in knowledge limits the ability of nurses to identify and assist fathers at risk of suboptimal bonding. This study aims to identify (1) the bonding levels of fathers to their preterm infants hospitalized in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) and (2) the association between father and infant variables and bonding of fathers to their preterm infants hospitalized in (NICUs).
DESIGN AND METHODS: This is

A child's death is a traumatic life-altering event, which significantly affects parents' mental health and well-being. Literature provides insights on parents' grief; however, less is known about how fathers cope with grief due to underrepresentation in research studies. This article presents selected findings about how fathers grieve, which emerged from a phenomenological study aimed at describing fathers' lived experience of bereavement. Participants described how societal norms influence their grief as men, and shared actionable ways they cope with profound grief. Various practical, creativ

There is a growing awareness about the burden of ill-health experienced by men. Research has shown that fatherhood has a protective effect on men's health. However, the transition can be complex and demanding, and may cause distress, anxiety and increased risk of depression. This article discusses paternal postnatal depression, which is a significant public health issue that is not acknowledged widely or well researched. As a result, men are under-screened, under-diagnosed and under-treated for the condition and other postnatal mental health problems, causing detrimental effects on their healt

This paper reports the qualitative findings from 40 couples involved in a study exploring men's post-natal mental health. Interviews were conducted with individuals soon after the birth of their first child. Findings suggest that new fathers want to be more involved in the direct care and nurturing of their children than their fathers were with them. Discourses which construct fathers and inform social structures have not kept pace with men's changed attitudes and role expectations limiting the options available to men as fathers. In particular men's employment circumstances figure in their ex

Bereavement support is a required practice standard for comprehensive palliative care. However, research to guide supportive care for fathers who experience child loss is scarce. This article presents selected findings illuminating fathers' need for support, which emerged from a phenomenological study describing fathers' lived bereavement experience. Eleven participating fathers from the United States and Canada discussed their need for support, which was limited and difficult to access. They offered their perspectives of peer support groups and professional mental health counseling. Participa

OBJECTIVE: To examine the physical, emotional, and relational responses of expectant fathers and to elucidate how Couvade-related phenomena influence couple dynamics.
METHODS: This qualitative study was conducted between July 2025 and October 2025 with nine married couples (n = 18). A total of 27 interviews were carried out, including 18 individual interviews and 9 joint couple interviews. Data were collected using a semi-structured interview guide developed by academic midwives, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using Braun and Clarke's reflexive thematic analysis.
RESULTS: Five main theme

This study identifies the factors influencing father involvement in container cities following the February 6, 2023 earthquakes in Türkiye and examines the current state of father involvement from a sociological perspective. Father involvement improves children's cognitive, social and emotional development as well as academic success. However, earthquakes can seriously disturb this. Previous studies have indicated that the father-child relationship transforms after disasters such as earthquakes. This study analyzes, within "father involvement" framework, how father-child relations differs in f

BACKGROUND: Most children exposed to father-perpetrated domestic violence (DV) continue to have contact or live with fathers, yet there is little research on the impact of fathering in the context of domestic violence.
OBJECTIVE: This paper aimed to identify pathways from children's exposure to father-perpetrated DV to compromised social-emotional outcomes. Based on extant literature on fathering and domestic violence, psychological, parenting, and coparenting features in DV fathers were identified as potential mediators of the relationship between child exposure to DV and their social-emotio

Father involvement in parenting can promote children's positive development. Despite the growing literature on father involvement, little is known about the heterogeneity in father involvement among Latino fathers. The present study sought to examine father involvement patterns and their predictors among Latino fathers who were predominantly unmarried and had a low income. A latent profile analysis was conducted on a sample of 830 Latino fathers of toddlers in the Building Strong Families program. Three father involvement profiles were identified: high involvement (61.81%); high accessibility

PURPOSE: The purpose was to describe African American fathers' experiences and perceptions of their role in supporting their breastfeeding partners and identify strategies to enhance this role.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Descriptive phenomenology guided the research process. Interviews were conducted with 12 African American fathers or partners recruited from community sites within the Southeastern United States between 2021 and 2022 whose partners had exclusively breastfed for at least 2 weeks within the last 24 months.
RESULTS: Twelve African American fathers of breastfeeding partners were

BACKGROUND: The aim of the conducted study was to analyze the phenomenon of Couvade Syndrome amongst fathers expecting their children in Poland. The authors examined the frequency of couvade symptoms in male subjects as well as their associations with male empathy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The research involved 143 expectant fathers. All subjects attended antenatal classes, and their female partners were in their third trimester. Before the start of classes, participants were asked to fill in the following questionnaires: a survey for measurement of Couvade Syndrome (which includes a set of 16 s

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to identify factors that predict recidivism among families in which the father is the perpetrator of physical abuse and to compare these factors to the factors that investigators believe are related to higher risk.
METHOD: A case-comparison design was used to understand risk among 137 predominantly Caucasian families in which a father had injured a child.
RESULTS: The multivariate analysis showed that families in which the father was unemployed (greater time at risk), had younger children, was not the biological father of all of the children, did not t

Many myths exist concerning the needs and problems confronting adolescent fathers. Research on adolescent pregnancy has proliferated in the last decade. We now have a substantial body of empirically-based findings in this area. Unfortunately, few substantive findings are available on adolescent fathers, yet the magnitude of this problem has reached epidemic proportion. This article will provide an overview of current research on adolescent fathers and their needs and offer suggestions for appropriate intervention.

In August 2025, my father passed away unexpectedly after a lifelong struggle with alcohol use disorder, and I struggled to process the impact of his death on my life. This narrative details my reflections in the months that followed as I navigated the aftermath of his death, both as a physician and as a daughter.
