Physiological significance of the negative short-loop feedback of prolactin.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the physiological significance of the rapid, short-loop, negative feedback of prolactin by passive immunization with antiserum to rat prolactin injected into the third cerebral ventricle (3V) of conscious, freely moving intact or castrated male rats. Blood samples for measurement of plasma prolactin concentrations were removed through implanted external jugular catheters. After injection of 3 microliters of undiluted antiserum, plasma levels of prolactin decreased rapidly (within 5 min) to values undetectable by RIA. Further study revealed that this

Parkinsonian Tremor as Unstable Feedback in a Physiologically Consistent Control Framework.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by decreased dopamine in the basal ganglia that causes excessive tonic inhibition of the thalamus. This excessive inhibition seems to explain inhibitory motor symptoms in PD, but the source of tremor remains unclear. This paper investigates how neural inhibition may change the closed-loop characteristics of the human motor control system to determine how this established pathophysiology could produce tremor. The rate-coding model of neural signals suggests increased inhibition decreases signal amplitude, which could create a mismatch between the closed

Electrocardiogram Synchronized Physiological Feedback During Obex Cavernoma Surgery: 2-Dimensional Operative Video.

This operative video presents a physiology-guided strategy for resection of a right paramedian obex cavernoma in a 57-year-old man with intractable hiccups, progressive dysphagia with aspiration, and hoarseness. Magnetic resonance imaging showed interval enlargement and recurrent hemorrhagic evolution, exophytic presentation to the caudal fourth ventricle, and an associated developmental venous anomaly. Because continued observation carried a risk of recurrent hemorrhage and worsening bulbar dysfunction, resection was performed through a midline suboccipital telovelar approach with multimodal

Understanding negative feedback and classical conditioning of autonomic responses in physiological regulation.

Physiological regulation is achieved via a complex and highly integrated network of innate autonomic and somatic reflexes combined with learned responses acquired through experience. Historically, scholars investigating homeostatic regulation focused on the intricate innate reflexes, with little or no consideration of the key role of experience and learning. Our goal in this perspective paper is to provide increased clarity as well as a more nuanced understanding of the roles of negative feedback and feedforward mechanisms in thermoregulation with relevance to the broader field of physiologica

Feedback loops and circular causality: a grammar to restore harmony to physiological systems.

Causal inference and its graphical representation using directed acyclic graphs provide invaluable tools for calculating effects and handling confounding in medicine. However, since biological systems involve complex dynamics characterized by numerous feedback loops, practitioners need to abstract out the inner workings of cycles in order to reason with a causal framework. This text presents a step beyond linear causality, toward a language that can adequately capture the circular complexities underlying human health. The most fundamental homeostatic mechanisms are inherently cyclic, including

Effects of bogus genetic feedback on subjective and physiological responses to acute stress.

Recent advances in direct-to-consumer genetic testing have made individualized genetic risk feedback increasingly accessible, yet its psychological impact remains unclear. Initial findings suggest potential adverse outcomes, including increased worry and biased symptom reporting. Given that stress reactivity is partially heritable and a key risk factor for numerous stress-related conditions, understanding the influence of genetic feedback on stress reactivity is critical. In this study, we investigated how receiving bogus genetic feedback about stress vulnerability influences subjective, physi

Gut feedback mechanisms and food intake: a physiological approach to slow carbohydrate bioavailability.

Glycemic carbohydrates in foods are an important macronutrient providing the biological fuel of glucose for a variety of physiological processes. A classification of glycemic carbohydrates into rapidly digestible carbohydrate (RDC) and slowly digestible carbohydrate (SDC) has been used to specify their nutritional quality related to glucose homeostasis that is essential to normal functioning of the brain and critical to life. Although there have been many studies and reviews on slowly digestible starch (SDS) and SDC, the mechanisms of their slow digestion and absorption were mostly investigate

A wireless physiological parameter monitoring system with a treatment feedback function during neonatal phototherapy.

Objective. Neonatal jaundice is a common condition in the early stages of newborns, and phototherapy is a fast, safe and effective method that is used to treat it. However, recent studies have shown that phototherapy may elicit side effects in infants, such as hypothermia, hyperthermia and dehydration. To improve the quality of phototherapy and the prognosis of patients, the changes in neonatal physiological parameters during phototherapy should be monitored to give better feedback to pediatricians or the phototherapy system. However, the current standard of clinical care during neonatal photo

Responses to false physiological feedback in individuals with panic attacks and elevated anxiety sensitivity.

Participants with elevated anxiety sensitivity and a history of panic attacks were compared to a low anxiety comparison group with respect to physiological and subjective reactivity to false heart-rate feedback and reactivity to a priming procedure. Whereas accurate heart-rate feedback elicited minimal responses, participants across groups showed significant physiological and subjective responses to false feedback. High risk and low risk participants did not differ in heart-rate responses to false feedback, though panic attack frequency did predict physiological and subjective reactions to fal

Integrating reflex, feedback, and prediction: a tiered model of physiological regulation for contemporary medical education.

Medical education traditionally presents physiological regulation through homeostatic feedback loops-reactive mechanisms that correct deviations from set points. More recently, allostatic models have emphasized the brain's anticipatory role in regulation. However, presenting these frameworks as competing paradigms creates conceptual confusion for learners. This paper proposes a unified, three-tiered model of physiological regulation that positions reflexive, homeostatic, and predictive mechanisms as complementary systems operating across different timescales. Tier 1 encompasses local reflexive

Feedback modalities in human-cobot collaboration: experimental evaluation of performance, user experience, and physiological responses.

Collaborative robots (cobots) are increasingly deployed in industrial as well as non-industrial domains to support human-centered operation. While physical safety and task efficiency have received considerable attention, less is known about how feedback modality influences operator experience and physiological responses under different collaboration demands. This study examines the effects of feedback modalities in two human-cobot collaboration scenarios representing distinct coordination structures: a low-collaboration turn-taking task and a high-collaboration synchronous shared-control task.

Self-Adhesive and Self-Sustainable Bioelectronic Patch for Physiological Feedback Electronic Modulation of Soft Organs.

Bionic electrical stimulation (Bio-ES) aims to achieve personalized therapy and proprioceptive adaptation by mimicking natural neural signatures of the body, while current Bio-ES devices are reliant on complex sensing and computational simulation systems, thus often limited by the low-fidelity of simulated electrical signals, and failure of interface information interaction due to the mechanical mismatch between soft tissues and rigid electrodes. Here, the study presents a flexible and ultrathin self-sustainable bioelectronic patch (Bio-patch), which can self-adhere to the lesion area of organ

Revisiting Concepts of Thermal Physiology: Understanding Feedback and Feedforward Control, and Local Temperature Regulation.

Most experts agree that the dominant mechanism through which body temperature is regulated, under a thermal challenge, environmental or metabolic, is negative feedback control. However, some consider negative feedback to be too sluggish to account for the rapid speed of response. The impression of sluggishness is based on an assumption that the body temperature that is regulated is a core temperature, whereas we concur with those who have concluded that what is regulated is an integrated temperature compiled from inputs from multiple body parts, including the skin. Negative feedback control is

AI-assisted qualitative analysis of formative feedback to support student-centered learning in physiology.

This study evaluates the effectiveness of large language models (LLMs), specifically Claude Sonnet 4.0 and ChatGPT 4.1, for analyzing formative feedback to support student-centered learning (SCL). In large courses, instructors often struggle to promptly review and synthesize student input. We used a low-stakes task: analyzing 63 anonymous student responses to a Muddiest Point prompt in a human physiology class after a lecture on respiratory physiology. Across 20 runs, both LLMs consistently identified "Ventilation and Lung Mechanics" as the most frequent area of confusion, aligning with human

Revisiting concepts of thermal physiology: understanding negative feedback and set-point in mammals, birds, and lizards.

The thermoregulatory system of homeothermic endotherms operates to attain thermal equilibrium, that is no net loss or gain of heat, where possible, under a thermal challenge, and not to attain a set-point or any other target body temperature. The concept of a set-point in homeothermic temperature regulation has been widely misinterpreted, resulting in such confusion that some thermoregulation specialists have recommended that it be abandoned. But the set-point concept has enjoyed a resurgence in a different domain, lizard microclimate selection. We review the principles of thermoregulation in

Mismatched Expectations: The Complex Interplay Between Societal Expectations and False Individual Feedback on Physiology During Competition.

Success in competitive environments hinges on complex psychological and social dynamics. In these contexts, performance can be disrupted when there is a mismatch between societal expectations and individual feedback competitors receive. This study examined how expectations tied to social identity influence physiological stress in competitive settings by manipulating aspects of a math competition task. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either negative or positive individual-level feedback, creating personal expectations of high/low performance on the upcoming task. To manipulate so

A Multi-objective Physiological Control for Continuous Flow Left Ventricular Assist Devices: Comparison of Estimator versus Sensor-based Feedback.

Left Ventricular Assist Devices have been successfully used for the treatment of Congestive Heart failure in patients who are not eligible for heart transplantation. This paper describes the implementation and comparison of the performance of a pressure sensor-based feedback controller. The strategies were tested on a mock loop of the systemic circulation. The results show that the use of pressure sensors generated a more accurate response of the controller compared to the use of estimators.Clinical Relevance- The study describes the integration of a LVAD physiological controller to a dynamic

A theoretical right atrial pressure feedback heart rate control system to restore physiologic control to the rate-limited heart.

Physiologic control of heart rate may be limited by sinus node injury or congenital conduction defects. Control theory may be applied to restore physiologic rate control. Mean right atrial pressure is a likely candidate for incorporation into an artificial control system because of its: (1) stability at rest; (2) tendency to increase during exertion in the rate-limited heart; (3) ability to decrease with increasing heart rate in the rate-limited heart; and (4) accessibility for measurement via the transvenous route. A theoretical right atrial pressure feedback heart rate control system is pres

Elite Youth Soccer Players' Physiological Responses, Time-Motion Characteristics, and Game Performance in 4 vs. 4 Small-Sided Games: The Influence of Coach Feedback.

The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of mild vs. strongly pushed coach feedback on the physiological response, ratio of perceived exertion (RPE), and time-motion characteristics in soccer training with small-sided games (SSGs). Sixteen elite youth soccer players (aged 17.2 ± 0.7 years, V[Combining Dot Above]O2max 62.1 ± 3.8 ml·kg·min) played two 4 vs. 4 small-sided games each. In random order, the coach provided a mild, unobtrusive, or a strongly pushed feedback throughout the game. Physiological measurements included heart rate expressed in mean values and intensity zones, bl
