Feeding and drinking behavior problems.

The physiologic and behavioral basis of normal canine and feline feeding is given in detail. Abnormalities of ingestive behavior include obesity and anorexia in both species, flank or blanket sucking in Doberman Pinschers, coprophagia and stone chewing in dogs, and wool chewing in cats. Drinking behavior is discussed briefly, and the abnormalities of hypernatremia (a failure of thirst) and psychogenic polydipsia and polyphagia are reviewed.

Developmental Feeding Stages and Their Impact on Child Feeding Behavior.

OBJECTIVES: Previous research has shown that critical periods of feeding skills development exist and feeding problems can arise in children due to delays in attaining feeding developmental milestones. This study aims to delineate the transitional process of feeding development in healthy children and children with gastrointestinal diseases (GIDs) and to examine the relationship between feeding milestones and the appearance of later feeding problems. METHODS: A cross-sectional case-control study among 711 healthy Greek children and 119 children with GID, aged 2-7 years. Parents completed the

Invited review: feeding behavior of goats.

Factors influencing the feeding behavior of goats include grazing management practices, type of vegetation and season, breed and stage of production, group size, and properties of diets fed in confinement. Considerable information has been gathered from visual observation during daylight. However, tools are now available to characterize the feeding behavior of goats while grazing and while in confinement throughout the day. Global positioning system collars can be used to assess horizontal and vertical distances traveled, up or down position of the head, and movement within pasture or rangelan

Feeding behavior in mammals including humans.

The complex control of food intake and energy metabolism in mammals relies on the ability of the brain to integrate multiple signals indicating the nutritional state and the energy level of the organism and to produce appropriate responses in terms of food intake, energy expenditure, and metabolic activity. Central regulation of feeding is organized as a long-loop mechanism involving humoral signals and afferent neuronal pathways to the brain, processing in hypothalamic neuronal circuits, and descending commands using vagal and spinal neurons. Sensor mechanisms or receptors sensitive to glucos

Parent feeding behavior and child appetite: associations depend on feeding style.

OBJECTIVE: Eating behavior traits measured in early life predict eating behavior and weight trajectories later in development, and may be associated with certain parental feeding behaviors. Our goal was to investigate the relationship between a range of feeding behaviors, and preschoolers' appetitive traits. METHOD: Four hundred thirty-nine parents of UK 3-5 year olds completed scales measuring authoritarian vs. authoritative forms of limiting (Restriction vs. Monitoring) and promoting (Pressuring vs. Prompting) intake, as well as Emotional and Instrumental Feeding. Parents also completed sca

Mechanisms of vagal plasticity influencing feeding behavior.

Sensory neurons of the vagus nerve receive many different peripheral signals that can change rapidly and frequently throughout the day. The ability of these neurons to convey the vast array of nuanced information to the brain requires neuronal adaptability. In this review we discuss evidence for neural plasticity in vagal afferent neurons as a mechanism for conveying nuanced information to the brain important for the control of feeding behavior. We provide evidence that synaptic plasticity, changes in membrane conductance, and neuropeptide specification are mechanisms that allow flexibility in

Effects of vagal neuromodulation on feeding behavior.

Implanted vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) for obesity was recently approved by the FDA. However, its efficacy and mechanisms of action remain unclear. Herein, we synthesize clinical and preclinical effects of VNS on feeding behavior and energy balance and discuss engineering considerations for understanding and improving the therapy. Clinical cervical VNS (≤30 Hz) to treat epilepsy or depression has produced mixed effects on weight loss as a side effect, albeit in uncontrolled, retrospective studies. Conversely, preclinical studies (cervical and subdiaphragmatic VNS) mostly report decreased food

Diet, gut microbiota composition and feeding behavior.

Advances in sequencing technologies have allowed for a more complete analysis of the microbiota composition and identification of differences among individuals and/or physiologies. Changes in microbiota composition and associated inflammation have been linked to both metabolic and behavioral disorders, and abnormality in microbiota composition, or dysbiosis, may play a causal role in the etiology and maintenance of these pathologies. There is accumulating evidence showing that the gut microbiota can communicate to the central nervous system to alter host behavior. Supplementation with L. rhamn

Multisensory interactions regulate feeding behavior in Drosophila.

The integration of two or more distinct sensory cues can help animals make more informed decisions about potential food sources, but little is known about how feeding-related multimodal sensory integration happens at the cellular and molecular levels. Here, we show that multimodal sensory integration contributes to a stereotyped feeding behavior in the model organism Drosophila melanogaster Simultaneous olfactory and mechanosensory inputs significantly influence a taste-evoked feeding behavior called the proboscis extension reflex (PER). Olfactory and mechanical information are mediated by ant

Feeding behavior after hypothalamic 6-hydroxydopamine injections.

6-Hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) injection into the rat hypothalamus produces profound changes in eating behavior and body weight gain. Willis and Smith have demonstrated an anorexic effect of lateral hypothalamic (LH) 6-OHDA, which they correlate with local catecholamine release from degenerating axons just behind the lesion. Work from our own laboratory has recently demonstrated that 6-OHDA injection into the medial paraventricular nucleus (PVN) has an initial effect of stimulating daily food intake and body weight gain. It is suggested that this phenomenon, consistent with reports of enhanced eat

Feeding behavior during sialodacryoadenitis viral infection in rats.

Sialodacryoadenitis (SDA) is a highly contagious common viral infection in rats, akin to mumps in humans. Anorexia occurs during such viral infection. But the pattern of the decrease in food intake (a decrease in either meal size and meal number or both) during spontaneous viral infection has not been previously characterized. We observed the onset of anorexia and an abnormal feeding pattern during an opportunistic SDA viral infection in our rat colony. We thus studied seven male rats. Before the viral infection there was a positive association between food intake and meal number (P<.05). Afte

Infant feeding behavior: development in patterns and motivation.

Studies of feeding behaviors in human infants not only provide normative data but also allow analyses of the behavioral regulation. Twenty healthy full-term infants were observed by two examiners and were audiovisually and polygraphically recorded under standard conditions at 2, 10, 18, and 26 weeks of age prior to, during, and after breast- or bottle-feeding. The parameters of sucking, breathing and swallowing significantly changed during the first 6 months of age. At 2 weeks, infants were alert and visually attentive during sucking. Breast-fed infants had more opportunities for intimate soci

Effect of intracerebroventricularly infused glucagon on feeding behavior.

Administration of pancreatic glucagon into 3rd cerebral ventricle of rats suppressed feeding with potency greater than 1000 times that of peripheral administration. A low dose of glucagon (5 ng) suppressed food intake mainly in short-term and slightly in long-term. A medium dose (25 ng) produced delayed feeding suppression. A high dose (100 ng) suppressed only short-term food intake. From this evidence, it is concluded that intracerebroventricular administration of physiological concentration of pancreatic glucagon suppresses short-term food intake through the hypothalamus. The possible mechan

Feeding behavior in monkeys with spontaneous diabetes mellitus.

In our laboratory, monkeys (Macaca mulatta) that attain middle age (10-14 years) and a body weight of over 15 kg often develop spontaneous diabetes mellitus. In some animals the development of the disease is accompanied by polyphagia and polydipsia. The polyphagia appears to be in response to loss of body weight. Gross estimates of energy balance in diabetic monkeys indicate that the daily maintenance cost (kcal) of diabetes is greater during the untreated phase of the disease than in the pre-diabetic state.

Obesity and the hepatic control of feeding behavior.

Despite its well-established role in the control of food intake, the liver has not been a target for the development of drugs to modulate appetite and treat obesity. This paper provides an overview of the hepatic control of food intake and focuses in particular on how it may play a part in overeating and body weight gain. Signals from the liver that control feeding behavior are triggered in response to changes in liver energy status and are carried to the brain by vagal sensory neurons. Consumption of diets rich in fat and carbohydrate is a major contributing cause of overeating and obesity, a

Analysis of feeding behavior with direct linear transformation.

AIM: The sucking pattern of term infants is composed of a rhythmic alteration of expression and suction movements. The aim is to evaluate if direct linear transformation (DLT) method could be used for the assessment of infant feeding. SUBJECT AND METHODS: A total of 10 gnormalh infants and two infants with neurological disorders were studied using DLT procedures and expression/suction pressure recordings. Feeding pattern of seven gnormalh infants were evaluated simultaneously recording DLT and pressures. The other infants were tested non-simultaneously. We placed markers on the lateral angle

The ontogeny of aquatic feeding behavior in Salamandra salamandra: stereotypy and isometry in feeding kinematics.

To examine the extent to which aquatic prey-capture behavior in salamanders is stereotyped and how feeding kinematics scales with size, the ontogenetic variability of aquatic feeding behavior was examined in eight Salamandra salamandra. Feeding kinematics (seven duration and angular displacement variables), kinematic variance and capture performance were quantified and compared in the first several feedings after birth with a series of feedings 8 weeks later, just prior to metamorphosis. Analysis of variance revealed no statistically significant ontogenetic differences in the kinematic variabl

[The role of the personality in the feeding behavior disorders].

Personality disorders are common in eating disorders and preliminary reports indicate that this type of disorders implicate a poor prognosis in anorexia and bulimia nervosa. Cluster C personality disorders, particularly avoidant and dependent personality disorder are the most frequent in anorexia nervosa. In bulimia nervosa, however, cluster B personality disorders, including borderline and histrionic personality disorders, are more frequent. Furthermore, temperament could differentiate anorectic patients from bulimic patients. Eating disorders seem to be associated with high scores in neuroti
