Feeding and eating disorders.

Eating disorders (EDs) are a group of prevalent psychiatric illnesses with an onset in early to late adolescence-a time of significant neural development, physical and psychologic growth, and self-exploration. The etiology and neurobiology of EDs are not well understood, but EDs are recognized as brain-based illnesses with serious acute and long-term consequences if undertreated or ignored. Two EDs, anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN), have historically been the primary EDs of focus. The DSM-5 updated diagnostic criteria for these disorders added two more: binge-eating disorder (BED

An overview of eating and feeding disorders according to the future criteria of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) is presented, including information on differential diagnosis, epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis as well as therapy. Binge-eating disorder is new and the most frequent eating disorder. While anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa mostly affect women, the gender ratio in binge-eating disorder is more balanced. Concerning etiology, socio-cultural, biological and psychological factors are discussed. Cognitive behavioral psychotherapy is the best-validated treatmen

Differentiating Eosinophilic Esophagitis and Eating/Feeding Disorders.

Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is an inflammatory condition of the esophagus that causes symptoms of esophageal dysmotility. Patients with feeding or eating disorders (ED) can have similar symptoms, and there is a paucity of literature exploring these similarities. Furthermore, EoE can occur in addition to an ED, requiring clinicians to obtain a thorough history, make accurate diagnoses, and adequately treat all underlying conditions. We present 4 pediatric cases highlighting the similarities between EoE and ED symptomatology. Patients 1 to 3 were presumed to have an ED and were subsequently d

[Feeding and eating disorders in ICD-11].

Feeding and eating disorders in ICD-11 Abstract. Innovations in ICD-11 include the adoption of a lifespan approach and culture-related guidance for each disorder. We describe the changes made to the chapter Feeding and Eating Disorders and compared them to the ICD-10. In addition to illustrating the revision of the guidelines for each disorder, we also comment on the inclusion of a new set of diagnoses, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) and binge-eating disorder (BED).

Dissecting the biology of feeding and eating disorders.

Feeding and eating disorders (FEDs) are heterogenous and characterized by varying patterns of dysregulated eating and weight. Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) are clarifying their underlying biology and their genetic relationship to other psychiatric and metabolic/anthropometric traits. Genetic research on anorexia nervosa (AN) has identified eight significant loci and uncovered genetic correlations implicating both psychiatric and metabolic/anthropometric risk factors. Careful explication of these metabolic contributors may be key to developing effective and enduring treatments for dev

DSM-5 eating disorders and other specified eating and feeding disorders: is there a meaningful differentiation?

OBJECTIVE: In the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for eating disorders, two main groups appear, threshold eating disorders (TED; anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder), and other specified feeding and eating disorders (OSFED). In addition to calculating prevalence of these two groups, we examined the degree to which they could be differentiated in terms of impairment and risk factors. METHOD: Adolescent female twins (N = 699) were interviewed with the Eating Disorder Examination on three occasions spanning 12.70-19.84 years of age. Assessments also included self-report measur

A BODY TO NOT FEEL DYSPHORIA IN FEEDING AND EATING DISORDERS: SOCIO-DEMOGRAPHIC AND CLINICAL CORRELATES OF DYSPHORIA IN FEEDING AND EATING DISORDERS.

BACKGROUND: Food-related problems in Feeding and Eating Disorders (hereafter referred to as eating disorders - EDs) might be considered as the expression of dysfunctional individual and relational patterns based on emotional and behavioral dysregulation. Dysphoria is a transnosographic syndrome found in a multitude of psychiatric disorders including EDs, our cross-sectional study aims to analyze its presence in Anorexia Nervosa (AN), Bulimia Nervosa (BN) and Binge Eating Disorder (BED) to define its socio-demographic, clinical correlates and phenomenological expression in the three types of ED

[Psychological disorders in the oral health care practice. Feeding and eating disorders].

Feeding and eating disorders are characterised by a persistent disturbance of eating or eating-related behaviour that results in the altered consumption or absorption of food, which significantly impairs physical health or psychosocial functioning. These disorders usually develop during childhood and are characterised by high morbidity and mortality rates. The aberrant eating habits lead to under- or overweight and the compensatory behaviours such as vomiting, laxative abuse, and rumination, can greatly impact the overall physical condition and especially the dentition and the oral cavity. Does maternal history of eating disorders predict mothers' feeding practices and preschoolers' emotional eating?

We aimed to examine whether a maternal history of eating disorders predicted mothers' feeding practices and preschoolers' emotional eating patterns. Data were available from 4851 mothers and their children, who participated in a Dutch population-based cohort study (the Generation R Study). Maternal history of lifetime eating disorders was assessed during pregnancy using a self-report questionnaire. Mothers filled out the Child Feeding Questionnaire and the Child Eating Behaviour Questionnaire when children were four years old. Linear regression analyses were performed, adjusting for potential

Feeding and Eating Disorders in Bariatric Surgery: A Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: Obese subjects undergoing bariatric surgery often display medical and psychiatric comorbidities, influencing post-operative course and long-term prognosis. Candidates for bariatric surgery are evaluated through a multidisciplinary assessment in the pre-operative phase, including a psychiatric visit. The psychiatric examination aims to screen psychiatric comorbidities, including feeding and eating disorders (FEDs). Indeed, there is evidence of the association between obesity and several psychiatric disorders, such as FEDs, but also anxiety disorders, mood disorders, psychotic diso

[Feeding, eating, and swallowing disorders in infants and children : An overview].

Swallowing is a dynamic process that requires more than 30 muscles in the recruitment/coordination of the lips, tongue, palate, pharynx, larynx and esophagus. The eating and swallowing procedure is learned in sensitive or critical periods: when a certain degree of maturation has been achieved, the appropriate stimulus permits a certain milestone of development to occur. The swallowing procedure occurs in three main stages oral, pharyngeal, and esophageal. Therefore, swallowing disorders may present in any, some, or all of these stages in addition to feeding problems. Adult dysphagia, or diffic

Pediatric feeding and eating disorders: current state of diagnosis and treatment.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders now recognizes six primary feeding and eating disorders including pica, rumination disorder, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder. Guided by research from the past 3 years, the current review outlines diagnostic criteria for each disorder, their clinical correlates and treatment options. Recent modifications to diagnostic criteria will likely help to improve treatment outcomes and prognosis. Nevertheless, several concerns remain regarding the validity of current diagnosti

Dysphoria Dimensional Model for Feeding And Eating Disorders: a Preliminary Study.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia Nervosa (AN), Bulimia Nervosa (BN) and Binge Eating Disorder (BED) are severe psychiatric illnesses which represent the main expression of Feeding and Eating Disorders (FED). Clinicians agree that emotional and behavioural dysregulation play a crucial role in FED. Dysphoria could help us to better understand these components. Indeed, we define dysphoria as a generic state of dissatisfaction and emotional instability, without any specific features. Among the multitude of symptoms, we find that irritability, discontent, interpersonal resentment and surrender prevail. These d

Research on feeding and eating disorders in India: A narrative review.

Despite growing evidence of their prevalence, research on feeding and eating disorders (FEDs) in India has been sporadic. This narrative review aimed to summarize the research on FED in India and set priorities for future research and translation of evidence. An electronic search was conducted in the MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar databases to identify relevant English peer-reviewed articles from April 1967 to July 2023. The extracted data from these studies included author names, publication year, research location, type of intervention (for interventional studies), nature of comparato
