Muscular anatomy of the forelimb of Leopardus geoffroyi: Functional and phylogenetic aspects in Feliformia, Part II: Forearm, autopod, and quantitative analysis.

For cats (Felidae), the forelimb plays a crucial role in their lifestyle, both for locomotion and for hunting. While there are studies on the anatomy of large and medium-sized felids, there are few on small Neotropical felids such as Leopardus geoffroyi. The present work complements a previous study by describing in detail the muscles of the forearm and autopodium, comparing them in a functional and phylogenetic context with other Feliformia species, and providing the first muscle maps of these regions for L. geoffroyi. For this purpose, both forelimbs of three adult specimens of L. geoffroyi

Suspected lily toxicosis in a meerkat (Suricata suricatta): a case report.

Lilies are considered nephrotoxic only to domestic cats, which belong to the family Felidae of the suborder Feliformia. However, a 7-month-old female meerkat, belonging to the family Herpestidae of the suborder Feliformia, presented with oliguria, seizure, tachypnea, self-biting, and nystagmus after it ingested lilies. The meerkat died approximately 40 hr after lily ingestion. Gross and histopathologic lesions consistent with acute renal failure were conspicuous in the animal. The renal lesions were acute tubular necrosis, corresponding to the typical pathological changes of lily toxicosis in

Molecular Tools for Lynx spp. qPCR Identification and STR-Based Individual Identification of Eurasian Lynx (Lynx lynx) in Forensic Casework.

The Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) is listed in CITES Appendix II and is protected under the Bern Convention and the EU Habitats Directive, yet it remains a frequent target of wildlife crime, highlighting the urgent need for reliable identification methods. This study focuses on determination and DNA quantification of the Lynx spp. using quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). The Llynx Qplex quantification multiplex system effectively distinguishes Lynx spp. from other Feliformia species by targeting mitochondrial and nuclear markers. Additionally, we present the results of the developmental validation

Molecular Tools for qPCR Identification and STR-Based Individual Identification of Panthera pardus (Linnaeus, 1758).

Background/Objectives The leopard (Panthera pardus), an apex predator listed in CITES Appendix I and classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN, is undergoing severe population declines driven by habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and illegal trade. Rapid and reliable species and individual identification is critical for conservation and forensic applications, particularly when analyzing highly processed or degraded seized wildlife products, where morphological identification is often impossible. We aimed to develop and validate a robust multiplex quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) assay combined

Widespread anticoagulant poison exposure in predators in a rapidly growing South African city.

Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) are used worldwide to control rodent populations. ARs bioaccumulate across trophic levels and threaten non-target wildlife. We investigated the prevalence of AR exposure in seven predator species in the rapidly developing Greater Cape Town region of South Africa - a mosaic of natural, urban, and agricultural areas within a global biodiversity hotspot. We focused sampling on caracals (Caracal caracal, n = 28) as part of a larger caracal ecology study, but also opportunistically sampled Cape Clawless otters (Aonyx capensis, n = 9), large-spotted genets (Genetta t

Fatal cowpox virus infection in captive banded mongooses (Mungos mungo).

Cowpox virus infections have been described in various domestic and exotic animal species. This report is the first on an outbreak of fatal generalized cowpox virus infection among captive banded mongooses (Mungos mungo, suborder Feliformia). All animals of a colony of 8 mongooses showed a fulminant course of disease. The whole population died (n=7) or was euthanized (n=1) within 11 days. Postmortem examinations were performed on 4 animals. All animals showed extensive necrotizing inflammation of retropharyngeal lymph nodes, typical poxviral skin lesions, and multiple necrotic foci in liver an

The adaptive significance of mandibular symphyseal fusion in mammals.

The mandibular symphyseal joint is remarkably variable across major mammalian clades, ranging in adults from unfused (amphiarthrosis) to partially fused (synarthrosis) to completely ossified (synostosis). Experimental work conducted on primates suggests that greater ossification of the symphysis is a response to increased recruitment of the balancing-side (i.e. nonchewing side) jaw-adductor muscles during forceful unilateral biting and chewing, with increased fusion strengthening the symphysis against correspondingly elevated joint stresses. It is thus expected that species with diets composed

Proteomics Using Draft Genomes: A Case Study in Spotted Hyena.

Crocuta crocuta, the spotted hyena, is unusual among the four remaining hyena species for its adaptation to hunting in preference to scavenging. Individual hyenas alternate between highly social life in matriarchal clans and solo hunting. Until 2020, the molecular biology of this species was hindered by the lack of genome data, but within three years, three draft genomes had been advanced for this species (2020-Yang, 2022-Shao, and 2023-DNA Zoo). This project generated both RNA-Seq (NCBI PRJNA658551) and proteomics data for animals from Kruger National Park in South Africa (ProteomeXchange PXD

Species-specific differences in Toxoplasma gondii, Neospora caninum and Besnoitia besnoiti seroprevalence in Namibian wildlife.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge about parasitic infections is crucial information for animal health, particularly of free-ranging species that might come into contact with livestock and humans. METHODS: We investigated the seroprevalence of three tissue-cyst-forming apicomplexan parasites (Toxoplasma gondii, Neospora caninum and Besnoitia besnoiti) in 506 individuals of 12 wildlife species in Namibia using in-house enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (indirect ELISAs applying purified antigens) for screening and immunoblots as confirmatory tests. We included six species of the suborder Feliformia, four
