Filgrastim Efficiency in Cats Naturally Infected with Feline Panleukopenia Virus.

Feline Panleukopenia (FPL) infection is caused by feline panleukopenia virus (FPV), and it is considered one of the most severe cat's infectious diseases. Since there is no specific antiviral treatment for FPL, the therapeutic protocol usually is focused on fluid therapy and supportive care. However, filgrastim, a granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) used in human medicine to treat neutropenia and leukopenia, has been lately used in treating FPV disease, providing promising results. During January 2022 and September 2024, twenty-two cats diagnosed with feline panleukopenia virus were

Ultrasonographic diagnosis of a fibrinonecrotic colonic cast in a kitten with feline panleukopenia virus.

Ultrasonography of a cat with diarrhoea and vomiting revealed a multi-layered, discrete linear structure within the large intestine with retention of the intestinal layers which could potentially be confused with an intestinal intussusception. The structure was ultimately expelled from the large intestine during defecation, and confirmed as a fibrinonecrotic cast. The origin of the fibrinonecrotic cast was assumed to be an intestinal pseudo-membrane formed in enteritis caused by immune suppression due to the panleukopenia virus. To our knowledge, this is the first ultrasonographic description

Advances in Feline Panleukopenia Virus Vaccines: Immunological Mechanisms, Current Challenges, and Future Perspectives.

Feline panleukopenia is a highly contagious and often fatal disease in cats caused by the feline panleukopenia virus (FPV), a member of the Parvoviridae family. Despite the widespread use of vaccination, FPV remains a significant threat to both domestic and wild felid populations worldwide, particularly in young or unvaccinated animals. Effective vaccination strategies are therefore essential for controlling the disease and reducing mortality. Current vaccines, including modified live and inactivated vaccines, have demonstrated substantial efficacy in inducing protective immunity; however, sev

Antibody response after feline panleukopenia virus vaccination in kittens with and without intestinal parasites.

OBJECTIVES: Vaccinations should only be given to healthy cats, and deworming before vaccination is generally recommended; however, so far, no study has investigated the influence of intestinal parasitic infection on the immune response in kittens. The aim of this prospective study was to compare the antibody response to feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) vaccination in kittens with and without intestinal parasites. METHODS: Overall, 74 healthy kittens were included. Of these, 17 had intestinal parasites (12/17 Toxocara cati, 6/17 Cystoisospora felis, 1/17 Capillaria species). Both kittens with

Detection of canine parvovirus and feline panleukopenia virus in fecal samples by strand exchange amplification.

Canine parvovirus 2 (CPV-2) and feline panleukopenia virus (FPLV) often cause acute enteric disease in their hosts. A simple, rapid, and effective method for the on-site detection of these viruses would be useful. We used a denaturation bubble-mediated strand exchange amplification (SEA) method to successfully detect CPV-2 and FPLV in fecal samples. SEA could detect as little as 3.6 pg/μL of CPV-2 and 6.6 pg/μL of FPLV genomic DNA following a 40-min incubation at an isothermal temperature of 61°C. Unlike PCR, SEA does not require complicated equipment, and positive samples produce a color chan

Cerebellar hypoplasia in an Amur leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis euptilura) with feline panleukopenia virus infection.

Cerebellar hypoplasia caused by feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) is well documented in domestic cats. Still, it remains unreported in wild felid species, including the Amur leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis euptilura). Understanding the impact of such viral diseases on wild populations is crucial for advancing conservation efforts and protecting wildlife. An orphaned Amur leopard cat exhibiting idiopathic ataxia was rescued. Initial diagnostics, including physical examination, radiography, and blood analysis, yielded no remarkable findings, though its clinical signs indicated an underlying

Molecular Characterization of a Feline Panleukopenia Virus Strain Isolated from a Dog with Clinical Gastroenteritis in Spain.

Canine parvovirosis is a fatal disease state traditionally caused by canine parvovirus (CPV), which evolved from feline panleukopenia virus (FPV). While FPV was historically restricted to felids, FPV-like strains were recently reported to be causing clinical disease in dogs. This study aims to characterize an FPV-like strain detected in an eight-week-old unvaccinated female dog in Spain exhibiting hemorrhagic diarrhea and severe leukopenia. After fecal DNA isolation, a 1745-base-pair fragment of the VP2 gene was sequenced for phylogenetic and molecular analysis. Our results revealed that this

Pathogenicity of a Canine-Derived Feline Panleukopenia Virus in Cats and NS1 Evolution Associated with Adaptation to Dogs.

Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) is a major feline pathogen, but canine-derived FPV variants have recently been identified. Here, we compared the pathogenicity of a canine-derived FPV strain in cats with that of a lethal feline-derived FPV strain and evaluated the evolutionary significance of its NS1 mutations. Kittens infected with the canine-derived strain developed only mild, self-limiting diarrhea without fever or mortality, whereas those infected with the feline-derived strain developed severe disease and reached humane endpoints by 9 dpi. The canine-derived strain caused prolonged fecal

Antibody response to feline panleukopenia virus vaccination in cats with asymptomatic retrovirus infections: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: Currently, there are only a few studies on how immunocompromised cats, such as cats infected with feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), respond to vaccination. Therefore, this study measured feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) antibodies in retrovirus-infected cats within a period of 28 days after FPV vaccination, and compared the immune response to that of non-infected cats. METHODS: Eight asymptomatic retrovirus-infected cats (four FeLV, four FIV), and non-infected age-matched control cats (n = 67) were vaccinated with a commercial FPV modified live

Establishment of a reverse genetics system for feline panleukopenia virus and feasibility study of a live vector vaccine.

A reverse genetics system for the feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) strain JL2280 was successfully established in this study. By optimizing the cloning strategy for the terminal hairpin structures, a full-length infectious clone, pFPV, harboring a KpnI genetic marker was constructed. The recombinant virus (rFPV) was successfully rescued in CRFK cells and exhibited replication kinetics, pathogenicity, and morphological characteristics comparable to those of the wild-type virus. To evaluate the potential of FPV as a live vector, a recombinant virus expressing enhanced green fluorescent protein (EG

Seroprevalence and associated risk factors for feline panleukopenia virus infection among managed giant pandas in China.

Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) poses a significant threat to carnivores worldwide, with increasing documentation of spillover infections in endangered species, including the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca). Despite the presence of serological evidence indicating historical exposure, contemporary data concerning the prevalence of FPV and the associated risk factors in giant pandas remains limited. This study conducted a comprehensive seroepidemiological survey of 136 giant pandas, representing 262 serum samples, from the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding between 2015 and 2023

Development of a recombinant Lactobacillus plantarum oral vaccine expressing VP2 protein for preventing feline panleukopenia virus.

Feline panleukopenia virus (FPV) represents a significant health threat to the kittens. While traditional vaccines administered via subcutaneous or intramuscular injection are effective, they can induce stress and adverse reactions. Moreover, unvaccinated kittens visiting veterinary clinics risk exposure to FPV, increasing their susceptibility to infection. Therefore, there is an urgent need for a safer, more gentle vaccination method with streamlined administration. In this study, we developed a recombinant L. plantarum NC8/VP2 expressing the VP2 protein of the prevalent Chinese FPV strain, F

Genetic characterization of feline panleukopenia virus from dogs in Vietnam reveals a unique Thr101 mutation in VP2.

BACKGROUND: Canine parvovirus type 2 (CPV-2) and feline parvovirus (FPV) are known as the main causes of several serious diseases and have a severe impact on puppies and kittens, respectively. FPV and new CPV-2 variants are all able to infect cats, causing diseases indistinguishable from feline panleukopenia. However, FPV only replicates efficiently in feline cells in vitro and replicates in dogs in the thymus and bone marrow without being shed in feces. In our previous study, the genotypes of six parvoviral isolates were unable to be identified using a SimpleProbe® real-time PCR assay. METHO
