BACKGROUND: Osteitis fibrosa cystica is a rare, benign and osteolytic lesion attributed to hyperparathyroidism. The high level of parathyroid hormone cause rapid bone loss.
CASE PRESENTATION: The patient is a 50-year-old male complaining of severe and persistent pain in the right knee joint. Imaging studies were suspicious for a benign tumor in the right distal femur. Biopsy under CT guidance showed numerous osteoclast aggregation and hemosiderin deposition around the bone trabeculae. Blood tests disclosed significantly elevated parathyroid hormone, serum calcium, serum alkaline phosphatase.

The typical radiologic finding of a "non-ossifying fibroma" of the distal femoral metaphysis was seen in a 17-year-old female patient with pain in the distal femur. The rapid development of this lesion was confirmed on the basis of earlier radiographs performed to clarify other complaints. Since the lesion had developed in no more than 34 months, with pronounced scintigraphic and MRI signal intensity, particularly in the late phase, and pain had prompted the patient to seek examination, the cause was assumed to be a neoplasia rather than a growth disorder. Histopathological examination reveale

Synovitis, acne, pustulosis, hyperostosis, and osteitis (SAPHO) syndrome is an umbrella term covering a constellation of bone lesions and skin manifestations, but has rarely been clarified in the clinic. We report a 28-year-old woman who had initial onset of SAPHO syndrome with involvement of the femur, and she experienced a tortuous diagnostic course. We also performed a literature review of SAPHO syndrome cases involving the femur and summarize several empirical conclusions by integrating previous findings with our case. Furthermore, we propose our perspective that ailment of the skin caused

BACKGROUND: Resection of large retroperitoneal neoplasms may injure the femoral nerve, thereby causing a permanent neurological deficit. We used electrical neurophysiological monitoring to identify, map, and preserve the femoral nerve during surgical resection to reduce the risk of neurological deficit.
METHODS: Seven patients with retroperitoneal neoplasms underwent eight resections. Compound muscle action potentials (CMAPs) were recorded from needle electrodes placed in the iliacus, quadriceps, and sartorius muscles. Spontaneous electromyography (EMG) was continuously monitored from the sam

De Garengeot's hernia is a femoral hernia involving the appendix. An appendiceal mucinous neoplasm within this hernia is exceptionally rare. We report a case of a 68-year-old woman presenting with a right inguinal mass. Ultrasonography identified the appendix within the femoral hernia sac, appearing as a tubular hypoechoic structure with inflammatory changes and a blind end tracing to the cecum. Contrast-enhanced Computed tomography (CT) revealed a well-defined cystic mass in the right femoral hernia with enhancing walls and septa and non-enhancing internal content, findings suggestive of an a

Defects of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) severely compromise mandibular function and facial contour, rendering its reconstruction one of the most challenges in maxillofacial surgery. This study introduced a novel technique for TMJ reconstruction employing vascularized medial femoral condyle (MFC) osteochondral flap and aimed to evaluate its medium-term functional outcomes and stability. This observational study included 15 patients who received vascularized MFC osteochondral flap reconstruction for TMJ ankylosis or neoplasms. The follow-up ranged from 12 to 69 months (median:24 months). Th

BACKGROUND: Although total hip arthroplasty is one of the most common orthopaedic surgical procedures, it remains unclear whether histopathological examination of the excised femoral head adds to the quality of patient care. We propose that assessment of femoral heads resected during total hip arthroplasty and donated for allograft use may provide a profile of femoral head pathology that benefits total hip arthroplasty patients and bone donors.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the histological findings reported for 6161 femoral heads donated for allograft use between 1993 and 2006. Specim

Background. The aseptic loosening of the stem is a frequent complication of post-resection endoprosthesis. Material and methods. Twenty-one patients were operated for primary neoplasm of the distal femoral epiphysis. In 3 cases (14.3%) loosening of the endoprosthesis stem appeared 4 to 8 years after the resection-reconstruction procedure. In all cases the endoprosthesis was reinserted with reconstruction of the femoral shaft, using cancellous femoral impaction grafting with cement (Exeter technique). Results. The early results of revision surgery were good in all 3 cases. Subtrochanteric fract

The authors report surgical treatment of a 59-year-old female with a giant solitary-fibrous tumor of the left hip. Previous excision of hip hemangioma was performed in 2016. Recurrent tumor with fast growth has occurred since 2018. The neoplasm consisted of 2 tumors connected by vascular structures. CT revealed soft tissue neoplasms in the upper third of the left thigh (anterior, medial and dorsal regions). Large tumors with an isthmus along the inner surface had tuberous contours and internal septa. The last ones and walls accumulated contrast agent. No structural damage to femoral muscles wa

Essential thrombocythemia (ET) is a type of myeloproliferative neoplasm characterized by an abnormal increase in platelets. We report a female patient with a severe femoral fracture and ET who underwent the femoral intramedullary fracture fixation procedure. Her past medical history included hypertension and ET. On the second day of hospitalization, her platelet count was 922 × 109/L. In our case, general anesthesia combined with a femoral nerve block and a lateral femoral cutaneous nerve block were used when the platelet count was within normal range. After surgery, the platelet count increas

In this paper, we describe a patient with transient osteoporosis of the femoral condyle. A differential diagnosis should be made for osteonecrosis, infectious disorders, and infiltrative neoplasms based on the normal laboratory findings and diffuse bone edema pattern in MRI. Since this disorder is self-limiting, both the surgeon and clinician should be aware of this condition and must avoid unnecessary intervention.

In a recent publication, reporting the sixth case of aortic angiosarcoma, probably induced by the implantation of a dacron vascular prosthesis, Weiss et al. have done a literature review concerning the association between the presence of vascular prostheses and the onset of mesenchymal neoplasms. Although they consider the incidence of this association very low, they also point out the hypothesis, largely supported by experimental studies, that vascular prostheses can play the role of aetiological co-factor or factor in the onset of these tumors. We consider useful to report a case of malignan

This third autopsy study of 23 centenarians (7 men and 16 women) included the pathologic examination of bone, the detection of malignant neoplasms, and the determination of the main and contributory causes of death. (Previous studies concerned the lungs and the cardiovascular, urogenital and digestive systems). The vertebral bone specimens showed definite osteoporosis in 14 of the 23 subjects. In some cases it was associated with kyphosis or scoliosis of the spine or a history of femoral fracture. Eight malignant neoplasms were observed in six patients. Prostatic cancers were found in three of

Conditions that adversely affect a child's hip alignment, joint congruity, or articular surfaces often result in joint destruction associated with pain and motion limitation later in life. The usual culprits are developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), slipped capital femoral epiphysis, Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, infection, trauma, and neoplasm. In this review, we address DDH, the most common cause of secondary osteoarthritis of the hip. Symptomatic sequelae of DDH present challenges for total hip arthroplasty, including excessive proximal femoral anteversion,

OBJECTIVE: Subcapital fractures of the femoral neck are common in elderly persons who have osteoporosis. Occasionally, radiographs of the hip in these patients show a radiolucency in the superolateral, subcapital region of the femoral neck that mimics the features of a pathologic fracture. Our purpose was to determine the prevalence of this finding and the anatomic variations of fracture alignment that cause this appearance.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All subcapital nonpathologic hip fractures (n = 111) that occurred at our institution during a 5-year period were reviewed. Radiographs were availa

INTRODUCTION: A De Garengeot hernia is defined by a femoral hernia containing the appendix. Acute appendicitis within a femoral hernia is an extremely rare surgical presentation and occurs in only 0.08-0.013% of cases as cited by the literature.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 64-year-old female presented to the Emergency Department of our hospital with acute onset of a right-sided groin bulge that occurred earlier that day after doing heavy lifting. Her workup revealed acute appendicitis contained within an incarcerated right femoral hernia. The patient underwent laparoscopic appendectomy with open

Intra-abdominal and intra-pelvic pathologies initially presenting in extra-abdominal/pelvic locations is unusual. This spread predominantly occurs with infectious processes to sites including the buttock, thigh, and calf. The routes of extension into adjacent anatomically weak compartments include the pelvic outlet, greater sciatic foramen, obturator foramen, inguinal or femoral canal, weak bones, or along nerves and blood vessels. Malignant neoplasms of the appendix, while extremely rare and accounting for only 0.4% of all gastrointestinal cancers, is one of the intra-abdominal pathologies th

De Garengeot's hernia, a femoral hernia containing an incarcerated appendix, is rarely encountered in clinical practice. We report a case of a 62-year-old woman presenting with a right groin lump. A computed tomography scan reported a right inguinal hernia containing fluid with no bowel involvement. Exploration of the right groin revealed a femoral hernia containing an inflamed appendix. Appendicectomy and suture repair of the femoral canal were performed, with histology showing a low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm, which is also rare. After a discussion during the colorectal multidiscipl
