Spinal cord injury (SCI) disrupts both neural and vascular networks, leading to a dual deficiency of bioelectric and biochemical energy that severely impedes neuroregeneration. To address this challenge, we developed an energy-boosting hydrogel that integrates biosafe electrical stimulation with a sustained-release biochemical energy system, thereby alleviating energy deficits to promote neural repair. Biodegradable potassium sodium niobate/ferrosoferric oxide (KNN/FO) nanoparticles were synthesized to enable in situ magnetoelectric conversion, and their efficacy in promoting regeneration thro

Structural design of the solar-absorbing layer has been considered as one of the most direct and effective approaches for improving the solar steam generation performance by maximizing the absorption of sunlight, but great challenges in manipulation simplification and structure controllability still remain. Herein, a polyester (PET) fabric covered with a vertically aligned 3D tower-like ferrosoferric oxide (Fe3 O4 ) array via a convenient magnetically driven spray-coating method is reported, and both the spatial density and height of the Fe3 O4 array are tunable upon spraying time. It shows an

Predicting the redox behavior of magnetite in reducing soils and sediments is challenging because there is neither agreement among measured potentials nor consensus on which Fe(III) | Fe(II) equilibria are most relevant. Here, we measured open-circuit potentials of stoichiometric magnetite equilibrated over a range of solution conditions. Notably, electron transfer mediators were not necessary to reach equilibrium. For conditions where ferrous hydroxide precipitation was limited, Nernstian behavior was observed with an EH vs pH slope of -179 ± 4 mV and an EH vs Fe(II)aq slope of -54 ± 4 mV. Ou

Transformation of metastable Fe(III) oxyhydroxides is a prominent process in natural environments and can be significantly accelerated by the coexisting aqueous Fe(II) (Fe(II)aq). Recent evidence points to the solution mass transfer of labile Fe(III) (Fe(III)labile) as the primary intermediate species of general importance. However, a mechanistic aspect that remains unclear is the dependence of phase outcomes on the identity of the metastable Fe(III) oxyhydroxide precursor. Here, we compared the coupled evolution of Fe(II) species, solid phases, and Fe(III)labile throughout the Fe(II)-catalyze

As a reductive Fe(II)-bearing mineral, green rust (GR) is able to reduce halogenated compounds in anoxic subsurface environments. The redox condition of subsurface environment often changes from anoxic to oxic due to natural and anthropogenic disturbances, but the interaction of GR with halogenated compounds in oxic, and anoxic-to-oxic transition conditions has not been studied. This study reveals that GR can sequester TBP for a short time (4 to 10 h) under anoxic conditions. Later, GR undergoes structural transformation to ferrihydrite and magnetite with the desorption of TBP. GR-derived iron

In soils, the speciation transformation of As were inherently related to the behaviors of iron (oxyhydr) oxides. It is poorly understood that the effects of the transformation of iron (oxyhydr) oxides coupled with As speciation transformation during dissimilatory Fe(III) reduction (DIR) involving with humic substances (HS) as electron donor or shuttle in soils with high arsenic geological background. In this study, the relationships between the transformation of iron (oxyhydr)oxides and As speciation transformation were investigated according to the response between continuously As speciation

Magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) are generally thought to navigate as individual cells by using intracellular magnetosome chains that provide a stable magnetic moment for orientation along magnetic field lines. Whether nonclassical magnetosome geometries and particle-scale magnetic states can support robust chain-level magnetic function, and potentially mediate interactions between cells, remains unresolved. Here, to we report a unicellular magnetotactic bacterium, strain WYHV-1, that biomineralizes comparatively large prismatic magnetite magnetosomes with distinctive dimples at both crystal ends

The reported contributions of magnetite to the abiotic natural attenuation of chlorinated ethenes have generated interest in its potential for soil and groundwater remediation. In this study, we investigated the impact of the two-step sulfidation method on the physicochemical properties and reactivity of magnetite with trichloroethene (TCE). We systematically evaluated the effect of different sulfur precursors (dithionite, thiosulfate, and sulfide) and sulfur-to-iron ([S/Fe]dosed) molar ratios on the reactivity. Results were compared to those of sulfidated nZVI (S-nZVI) as a benchmark for asse

Iron (Fe) oxyhydroxides can be reductively dissolved or transformed under Fe reducing conditions, affecting mineral crystallinity and the sorption capacity for other elements. However, the pathways and rates at which these processes occur under natural soil conditions are still poorly understood. Here, we studied Fe oxyhydroxide transformations during reduction-oxidation cycles by incubating mesh bags containing ferrihydrite or lepidocrocite in paddy soil mesocosms for up to 12 weeks. To investigate the influence of close contact with the soil matrix, mesh bags were either filled with pure Fe

In this study, changes in the reactivity of nanoscale zerovalent iron (NZVI) in five different groundwater (GW) systems under anoxic and oxic conditions were examined over a wide range of aging time (0 - 60 d). p-nitrophenol (p-NP) was used as a redox-sensitive probe, whereas nalidixic acid (NA), a typical antibiotic found in the natural environment, was used as a sorbing compound. Investigation of the p-NP reduction in pure water systems showed that NZVI lost 41% and 98% of its reductive activity under anoxic and oxic conditions after 60 d, while enhancement of its reactivity was observed aft

Iron (Fe) oxides and fulvic acid (FA) are the key components affecting the fate of cadmium (Cd) in soil. The presence of FA influences Fe mineral transformation, and FA may complicate phase transformation and dynamic behavior of Cd. How varying Fe minerals and FA affect Cd immobilization during the ferrihydrite transformation induced by various Fe(II) concentrations, however, is still lack of quantitative understanding. In this study, we built a model for Cd species quantification during phase transformation based on mechanistic insights obtained from batch experiments. Spectroscopic analysis

Spray-dried TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofiber (TOCN)-Fe3O4 (TF) composite particles were fabricated using TOCNs of distinct fiber lengths, where the long TOCNs were approximately 3 times longer (around 1 μm) than the short TOCNs (approximately 350 nm). The objective was to elucidate how nanofiber aspect ratio governs particle morphology, magnetic performance, and bioaffinity. SEM and TEM analyses revealed that both TOCN types formed spherical particles (approximately 2-3 μm) with fibrous surface textures, yet the Fe3O4 distribution varied significantly. Short TOCNs promoted dense fiber entang

The influence of phosphate on the competitive formation of magnetite and lepidocrocite and the properties of magnetite prepared from mixtures of Fe(II) and Fe(III) salts were studied. Products were prepared at 90 degrees C and pH 12.5 (series 1), 50 degrees C and pH 7 (series 2) and 20 degrees C and pH 8 (series 3). The P/Fe atomic ratio in the initial solution ranged from 0 to 3% and the pH was kept at the desired value with NaOH or KOH. Air was used as oxidant in series 2 and 3. All products, which were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, chemical analysis a

BACKGROUND: Global agricultural sustainability faces considerable challenges owing to abiotic and biotic stresses, currently developing functional nanomaterials is an important way to alleviate the above stresses. Herein, ferrosoferric oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles are modified with L-arginine (Arg) and grafted with cinnamaldehyde (Cin) to prepare smart Fe-Arg-Cin nanoparticles (NPs) for alleviating drought and disease stresses.
RESULTS: The structure and properties of Fe-Arg-Cin were characterized. Results revealed that the nanoparticles exhibit a uniform size distribution with 6.8% Cin loadin

Magnetotaxis has evolved independently numerous times in bacteria, whereby genetically controlled biomineralization of nano-crystalline magnets results in swimming along Earth's magnetic field lines. Compared to magnetotactic bacteria (MTB), evolutionary mechanisms of magnetotaxis as a trait in eukaryotes remain poorly understood. Here, we report a magnetotactic ciliate, Tropidoatractus magnetotacticus sp. nov., that acquires magnetotaxis via syntrophy. T. magnetotacticus exhibits magnetotaxis due to the magnetic moment of internal ferrimagnetic magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles forming ellipsoi

Indigenous microbial communities in fine tailings (FT) biodegrade residual diluent hydrocarbons and support CH4 emissions from oil sands tailings ponds and end-pit lakes. We investigated the effect of added crystalline Fe mineral magnetite on microbial metabolism of hydrocarbons in FT collected from methanogenically less and more active sites of an end-pit lake. Magnetite accelerated CH4 production by enhancing the biodegradation of hydrocarbons, with a more prominent effect on complex/relatively recalcitrant aliphatics (C8-C11 compounds) and monoaromatics. Interestingly, 86-92 % of total magn

Life as we know it is homochiral, but the origins of biological homochirality on early Earth remain elusive. Shallow closed-basin lakes are a plausible prebiotic environment on early Earth, and most are expected to have significant sedimentary magnetite deposits. We hypothesize that ultraviolet (200- to 300-nm) irradiation of magnetite deposits could generate hydrated spin-polarized electrons sufficient to induce enantioselective prebiotic chemistry. Such electrons are potent reducing agents that drive reduction reactions where the spin polarization direction can enantioselectively alter the r

Chitons are herbivorous invertebrates that use rows of ultrahard magnetite-based teeth connected to a flexible belt (radula) to rasp away algal deposits growing on and within rocky outcrops along coastlines around the world. Each tooth is attached to the radula by an organic structure (stylus) that provides mechanical support during feeding. However, the underlying structures within the stylus, and their subsequent function within the chiton have yet to be investigated. Here, we investigate the macrostructural architecture, the regional material and elemental distribution and subsequent nano-m

In iron ore processing plants, different tailing streams are usually transferred to the tailings thickener for partial dewatering and finally transferred to the tailings dam as a single stream. Therefore, the mixing of different tailings streams happens. This way can challenge the process of reprocessing the tailings in the tailings dam since the mixing of different tailings streams causes more complexity in the mineralogical composition as well as the chemical composition of the tailings in the tailings dam. To solve this problem, the idea of separate characterization and separate upgradation
