OBJECTIVES: To compare the fetal mortality rate in the Delta counties of a state in the Mississippi Delta region of the United States with that of the non-Delta counties of the same state.
METHODS: Hospital discharge data for maternal hospitalizations were linked to fetal death and birth certificates for 2004-2010. Data on maternal characteristics and comorbidities and pregnancy characteristics and outcomes were evaluated. The frequency of characteristics of pregnant women and pregnancy outcomes between Delta and non-Delta areas of the state was compared.
RESULTS: There were a total of 248,2

PURPOSE: Perinatal mortality has been decreasing in Europe thanks to a reduction in neonatal mortality. The causes of fetal mortality remain poorly studied. The objective was to determine the late fetal mortality rate in Spain in 2015 and the associated factors.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed using data regarding births in 2015 in Spain extracted from the National Institute of Statistics. Single births at 28 or more weeks of pregnancy were included. The sample comprised 340,371 births. Sociodemographic, obstetrical and neonatal variables were analyzed using univariate and mult

Stillbirths are the largest component of perinatal mortality. Most are currently classified as 'unexplained', which is not helpful for counselling and individual care or for setting priorities for maternity services. The new ReCoDe classification reduces the number of stillbirths categorized as 'unexplained' from 66 to 14%. Both stillbirths and neonatal deaths are strongly associated with fetal growth restriction, and increased awareness of intrauterine growth is essential for any strategies which seek to avoid adverse perinatal outcome.

In order to compare the maternal-fetal outcome in pregnant women of advanced age (bigger than 35 years old) with those smaller than 30 years. 268 pregnant women were studied that went for their control and attention of the childbirth, corresponding 134 patients of more than 35 years and 134 patients between 20-29 years (control group). Cases were excluded if presented confounding variables (smoking, obesity, multiparity and maternal illnesses associated to the pregnancy). Data of maternal-fetal morbimortality were written down both groups and they were analyzed by means of X2 test or Fisher ex

The fetal growth curve and neonatal mortality rate, based on gestational age and birthweight, are important for identifying groups of high-risk neonates and developing appropriate medical services and health-care programmes. The purpose of this study was to develop a national fetal growth curve for neonates in Korea, and examine the Korean national references for fetal growth and death according to their characteristics. Data of Korean vital statistics linked National Infant Mortality Survey conducted on births in 1999 were used in this study. The total livebirths were 621,764 in 1999, which w

In Oklahoma, the infant mortality rate is higher than the national rate. Fetal Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) is an effective perinatal systems intervention. FIMR gathers information from medical, social, and community sources taking a comprehensive look at how well these systems are serving women and infants. It is important to understand that FIMR is a method to develop community-based plans to reduce fetal and infant mortality. It is not a quick-fix solution to a complex problem, a research study, an institutional review, or a system for assigning blame or responsibility for a death. FIMR h

UNLABELLED: Objective To review fetal and infant deaths from women enrolled in Indianapolis Healthy Start using the National Fetal and Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) methods to provide strategies for prevention.
METHODS: Marion County Public Health Department (MCPHD) FIMR staff identified and reviewed 22 fetal and infant deaths to Indianapolis Healthy Start program participants between 2005 and 2012. Trained FIMR nurses completed 13 of 20 maternal interviews and compiled case summaries of all deaths from the MCPHD FIMR database.. Results Case review teams identified a total of 349 family stre

Over the last few decades, the fields of fetal surgery and maternal-fetal medicine have developed interventions aimed at modifying severe diseases in utero. Innovations in fetal approaches to congenital diaphragmatic hernia and myelomeningocele have shown considerable promise in modifying the clinical course with fetal intervention. Patients who present to fetal centers to be evaluated for these interventions face challenging decisions that directly relate to questions of mortality and quality of life. This article explores how clinicians might apply the tools and principles of fetal palliativ

Fetal and Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) has been a dynamic process from its inception in the 1980s. Essentially, it is a local, community-driven process that has grown and been refined as more communities adopt the methodology. The National Fetal and Infant Mortality Review (NFIMR) Program, a partnership between the federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, serves as a resource for state and local communities implementing FIMR. In this issue of the Maternal and Child Health Journal, two articles by Baltay et al. and Grason and Misra
