γ-radiation detector based on the one-dimensional photonic structure composed of PSi layers infused with Bombyx mori silk fibroins.

This study presents a method for utilizing defect-free photonic crystals to design gamma-ray radiation sensors. The sensor uses a conventional 1D photonic crystal structure made of alternating porous silicon layers with varying porosity and thickness. By infusing the pores with gamma-ray-exposed silk fibroins, the sensor detects radiation. Exposure to radiation doses of 100 and 300 kGy causes a red shift in the photonic band gap, while a dose of 200 kGy results in a blue shift. The proposed theoretical research work utilizes the fundamental approach of the transfer matrix method (TMM) in addit

Bio-mineralized tin/bismuth oxide nanoparticles with silk fibroins for efficient electrochemical detection of 2-nitroaniline in river water samples.

In recent years, the usage of nitroaniline has played a vital role in pharmaceutical formulations as it is a crucial ingredient in the synthesis of pesticides and dyes. However, the level of nitroaniline existing in industrial waste keeps rising the environmental contamination. Thus, monitoring of active nitro-residuals becomes more significant in reducing the toxicity of the ecosystem. Therefore, we have taken an attempt to evaluate the hazardous pollutant 2-nitroaniline (2-NA) using the electrocatalyst viz., tin-doped bismuth oxide inserted on a biopolymer silk fibroin composite modified gla

Effects of silk fibroin in murine dry eye.

The study aimed to investigate the effects of silk fibroin in a mouse model of dry eye. The experimental dry eye mouse model was developed using more than twelve-weeks-old NOD.B10.H2b mice exposing them to 30-40% ambient humidity and injecting them with scopolamine hydrobromide for 10 days. Tear production and corneal irregularity score were measured by the instillation of phosphate buffered saline or silk fibroin. Corneal detachment and conjunctival goblet cell density were observed by hematoxylin and eosin or periodic acid Schiff staining in the cornea or conjunctiva. The expression of infla

Silk fibroin-based bioadhesives for biomedical applications.

Silk fibroin (SF) has emerged as a versatile natural protein for biomedical adhesives owing to its generally favorable biocompatibility, biodegradability, tunable mechanical properties, and abundant functional groups that enable diverse molecular engineering. Nevertheless, the intrinsically weak adhesive capability of native SF, particularly under wet physiological conditions, remains a major obstacle to its broader biomedical applications. In recent years, substantial progress has been achieved in enhancing the adhesive performance and multifunctionality of SF-based adhesives through rational

Silk Fibroin Scaffolds for Urologic Tissue Engineering.

Urologic tissue engineering efforts have been largely focused on bladder and urethral defect repair. The current surgical gold standard for treatment of poorly compliant pathological bladders and severe urethral stricture disease is enterocystoplasty and onlay urethroplasty with autologous tissue, respectively. The complications associated with autologous tissue use and harvesting have led to efforts to develop tissue-engineered alternatives. Natural and synthetic materials have been used with varying degrees of success, but none has proved consistently reliable for urologic tissue defect repa

Surface Modification and Characterisation of Silk Fibroin Fabric Produced by the Layer-by-Layer Self-Assembly of Multilayer Alginate/Regenerated Silk Fibroin.

Silk-based medical products have a long history of use as a material for surgical sutures because of their desirable mechanical properties. However, silk fibroin fabric has been reported to be haemolytic when in direct contact with blood. The layer-by-layer self-assembly technique provides a method for surface modification to improve the biocompatibility of silk fibroin fabrics. Regenerated silk fibroin and alginate, which have excellent biocompatibility and low immunogenicity, are outstanding candidates for polyelectrolyte deposition. In this study, silk fabric was degummed and positively cha

Photobonding of silk fibroin-based hydrogels to rabbit corneas.

INTRODUCTION: Corneal abrasions are common ocular injuries characterized by the loss of epithelial cells. Severe cases are often treated with amniotic membrane transplantation. However, as an allogenic tissue, it can trigger immune responses, it is scarce and costly, and may require suturing to the cornea. In this study, we propose and evaluate two silk fibroin-based hydrogels implanted in rabbit corneas with a sutureless photobonding technique as a surrogate for the amniotic membrane in corneal wound healing. METHODS: Silk fibroin-based hydrogels were developed with polyethylene glycol (PEG)

Defective autophagy in a fibroin secretion-deficient silkworm mutant.

The silkworm Bombyx mori is an economically important insect for silk production. Its silk glands are responsible for the synthesis and secretion of silk proteins. The naked pupa (Nd), a fibroin heavy chain mutant strain of silkworm, was found to exhibit severe atrophy, degeneration of the posterior silk gland (PSG), and abnormal secretion of fibroin proteins, thereby producing little or no silk. Here, we found that the autophagic marker Atg8-PE was upregulated through the target of rapamycin complex 1 signaling pathway in Nd. However, as autophagy substrates, SQSTM1/p62 and ubiquitinated prot

Hydrogelation of Regenerated Silk Fibroin via Gamma Irradiation.

Gamma irradiation, which is one of the more conventional sterilization methods, was used to induce the hydrogelation of silk fibroin in this study. The physical and chemical characteristics of the irradiation-induced silk fibroin hydrogels were investigated. Silk fibroin solution with a concentration greater than 1 wt% formed hydrogel when irradiated by gamma rays at a dose of 25 or 50 kGy. The hydrogel induced by 50 kGy of radiation was more thermally stable at 80 °C than those induced by 25 kGy of radiation. When compared to the spontaneously formed hydrogels, the irradiated hydrogels contai

Transdermal delivery of 40-nm silk fibroin nanoparticles.

Transdermal administration of drugs improves their bioavailability and is capable of systemic and local treatment. To improve the skin permeability of drugs, nano-sized systems have attracted attention as drug carriers for transdermal drug delivery system. We considered that silk fibroin composed of a crystalline region with many hydrophobic amino acids and an amorphous region with many hydrophilic amino acids was useful as a carrier for transdermal administration of a drug because of the balance between hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity. In this study, silk fibroin nanoparticles with mean vol

Effect of plasma-irradiated silk fibroin in bone regeneration.

We have recently identified plasma-irradiated silk fibroin (P-AF) as a key regulator of bone matrix properties and composition. Bone matrix properties were tested in 48 femur critical size defects (3.25 mm in diameter) with the expression of osteoblast specific genes at 1 and 2 weeks after surgery. The scaffolds were characterized by various states of techniques; the scanning electronic microcopy revealed the large sized pores in the aqueous-based silk fibroin (A-F) scaffold and showed no alteration into the architecture by the addition of plasma irradiation. The contact angle measurements con

On model of angiogenesis and the mechanism in porous silk fibroin films.

The purpose of this paper is to explore the mechanism of the angiogenesis modes in the biomaterials implanted in vivo. By means of experimental observation and analysis of the capillary growing state in the porous silk fibroin film implanted into rats, we intended to develop a modeling expression on the growth mode of the capillaries in the biomaterials. Additionally, we proposed the response model of endothelial cells (ECs) resulting from vascular endothelial growth factor's concentrations at different stages after the implantation. With the implantation experiment, it was identified that ang

Preliminary results of the application of a silk fibroin scaffold to otology.

The surgical treatment to repair chronic tympanic membrane perforations is myringoplasty. Although multiple autologous grafts, allografts, and synthetic graft materials have been used over the years, no single graft material is superior for repairing all perforation types. Recently, the remarkable properties of silk fibroin protein have been studied, with biomedical and tissue engineering applications in mind, across a number of medical and surgical disciplines. The present study examines the use of silk fibroin for its potential suitability as an alternative graft in myringoplasty surgery by

Engineering Silk Fibroin-Based Biomaterials for Neural Repair.

Neurological injuries remain a major clinical challenge due to the limited regenerative capacity of neural tissue, the persistence of inhibitory post-injury microenvironments, and the lack of biomaterials capable of simultaneously providing structural support and biological instruction. Growing evidence highlights that biomaterial-mediated modulation of the neural microenvironment is essential for effective neural regeneration and functional recovery. Silk fibroin (SF), a naturally derived protein biomaterial, has attracted growing interest in neural repair owing to its tunable mechanical prop

Silk fibroin-based biomaterials for disc tissue engineering.

Low back pain is the major cause of disability worldwide, and intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is one of the most important causes of low back pain. Currently, there is no method to treat IVDD that can reverse or regenerate intervertebral disc (IVD) tissue, but the recent development of disc tissue engineering (DTE) offers a new means of addressing these disadvantages. Among numerous biomaterials for tissue engineering, silk fibroin (SF) is widely used due to its easy availability and excellent physical/chemical properties. SF is usually used in combination with other materials to const

Non-mulberry Silk Fibroin Biomaterial for Corneal Regeneration.

Successful repair of a damaged corneal surface is a great challenge and may require the use of a scaffold that supports cell growth and differentiation. Amniotic membrane is currently used for this purpose, in spite of its limitations. A thin transparent silk fibroin film from non-mulberry Antheraea mylitta (Am) has been developed which offers to be a promising alternative. The silk scaffolds provide sufficient rigidity for easy handling, the scaffolds support the sprouting, migration, attachment and growth of epithelial cells and keratocytes from rat corneal explants; the cells form a cell sh
