We present a rare case of benign intraosseous desmoplastic fibroma, occurring in the tibial bone of a 48-year-old woman. The plain film features consist of a lytic, expansile lesion, in the metaphysis and epiphysis of the bone. We present a case involving the long bone in which the correct diagnosis was suggested by CT and MRI. The appearance of the lesion on CT and MR is described.

INTRODUCTION: The desmoplastic fibroma is a rare locally invasive bone tumour. Surgical resection with minimal margins is recommended.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 15 year-old boy was referred with chronic left thigh pain. MRI revealed a bone lesion within the cavity of the inner table of the left iliac wing without invasion of the underlying bone marrow. A surgical biopsy revealed a desmoplastic bone fibroma. A partial resection of the inner table of the iliac wing sparing the outer table was performed. At the latest follow-up the initially spared iliac wing had needed further resection. The reas

A 69-year-old woman with a 25-year history of recurrent sciatica presented with an expanding lytic lesion of the right side of the first sacral vertebra. Histological examination proved the lesion to be a DF. DF is usually diagnosed in young patients and is very rarely located in the spine and sacrum. The growth rate of the tumor was presumed to be very low because it had not progressed from radiological studies performed 9 years previously. The clinical, radiological, and pathological features of DF are described, and the differential diagnoses are discussed. The most difficult problem is to

CASE REPORT: A 1-year-old girl presented with a 10-month history of progressive protuberance of the left frontal skull. Magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography demonstrated a large osteolytic interosseous mass extending to the frontal sinus and temporal base without any intracranial invasion. A fronto-temporo-parietal craniectomy of the outer skull table and excision of an interosseous tumor resulted in local dural exposure in the temporal area that was covered by cranioplasty. Pathological examination identified desmoplastic fibroma (DF) of the skull. The patient's cranial asymmetr

There have been only a few cases of desmoplastic fibroma of the spine in the literature and only one of them was purely located on the cervical spine. We report a new patient with the diagnosis of desmoplastic fibroma of the fourth cervical spine. The patient had the complaints of left arm and neck pain. After his radiological evaluation, a mass lesion was found on the left lamina of the fourth cervical spine. Surgical treatment was performed, and the histopathological examination revealed the diagnosis of desmoplastic fibroma. Patients with desmoplastic fibroma of the cervical spine may prese

INTRODUCTION: The desmoplastic fibroma is a rare bone tumor, characterized by aggressive local infiltration, with frequent recurrence. The most common site is the mandible. Radioclinical signs are not specific and the histological diagnosis may be difficult.
CASE: A 16 year-old male patient consulted for a painless and hard left mandibular swelling, without inferior alveolar nerve disorders. The tumor extended from tooth 31 to tooth 35, the mucosa was healthy. The panoramic view showed a multilocular osteolytic lesion with dental root resorption. CT scan showed expansion of bony cortex with r

The clinical and pathological features of six cases of desmoplastic fibroma of bone are presented. Desmoplastic fibroma is rarely seen as a primary tumour of bone; when it does occur the sites of predilection are the long bones, but other sites such as the scapula and os calcis can be involved. Radiographically the lesion tends to expand the bone from within; it is well-demarcated and lytic, often with a trabeculated soap-bubble appearance. The cellular structure and the morphological arrangement are similar to those of aggressive fibromatosis of soft tissues. Differential diagnosis from malig

A 40-year-old woman with left periorbital swelling for 1 month presented without diplopia or change in vision. Imaging studies revealed a 1-cm mass at the frontozygomatic junction at the orbital rim with slight bony erosion and spiculation. The lesion was applied to the periosteum and was excised along with a portion of the bony orbital rim. Histopathology revealed elongated and stellate fibroblasts within a dense collagenous matrix. Vimentin and Masson trichrome staining was consistent with a collagenous fibroma, a rare tumor that has, only once before, been reported in the orbit in the lacri

Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) is a benign but locally aggressive tumor usually recognized as an intraosseous counterpart of soft tissue fibromatosis in both gnathic and extra-gnathic sites. The most common site is mandible followed by pelvis and long bones. Maxilla has been reported to be involved very rarely. Desmoplastic fibroma is recently being considered to be one of the oral manifestations of tuberous sclerosis rather than a coincidental finding. We report an unusual case of a girl with a previous diagnosis of tuberosclerosis who presented at 8 years with an oral lesion diagnosed as desmopla

Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) is an uncommon benign tumor of bone that is notable for its locally destructive nature and frequent recurrence. The lesion originates within the osseous tissue and most often affects the mandible, pelvic girdle, and long bones; involvement of the maxilla is rare. An 18-year-old female patient presented with a slowly developing lesion in the right maxillary premolar area. Clinical examination supported by radiographic findings demonstrated an intraosseous pathology, and histopathological evaluation confirmed the diagnosis of desmoplastic fibroma. Although benign, this

Several odontogenic and non-odontogenic tumors and related lesions affecting the jaws share clinical presentation and imaging appearance. However, all cases have to be approached and treated on an individual basis, based on a reliable anatomic pathology diagnosis. The present paper describes a case of a desmoplastic fibroma, which was misdiagnosed as an odontogenic keratocyst, and spotlights the potential benefit and conclusive role of a second opinion in oral and maxillofacial pathology diagnosis. A brief review of the literature is also provided.

Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) is a benign intra-osseous neoplasm characterized by the formation of abundant collagen fibers. It arises most commonly in the jaws and exhibits local aggressiveness and high recurrence rates after local resection. An uncommon case of expansive DF involving the right maxilla, maxillary sinus, and inferior orbital wall of a 49-year-old man whose initial symptoms were similar to acute sinusitis is presented, and the criteria for diagnosis and clinical management are discussed.

Collagenous fibroma is an uncommon benign soft tissue lesion that has a wide anatomic distribution. We describe a case of a collagenous fibroma that appeared in the left soft and hard palate of a 37-year-old woman as a 5.0-cm solitary, firm nodule. Microscopically, it was composed of stellate or spindle-shaped cells embedded in hypovascular fibrous stroma. Entrapment of fat was focally identified at the edges. Mitotic figures and tumor necrosis were absent. Tumor cells were immunopositive for vimentin, and a few cells were positive for alpha-smooth muscle actin. Tumor extracellular matrix was

A 2-month-old male infant presented with a lytic lesion of the distal radius which was diagnosed as desmoplastic fibroma. Tumor recurred following en bloc resection of the distal radius and forearm, necessitating an elbow disarticulation. Subsequently, the child developed multiple café-au-lait spots, and histologic sections have been reinterpreted as neurofibromatosis. This case illustrates the potential difficulty in diagnosing neurofibromatosis when few or no classic stigmata of the disease are present.

Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) is a rare benign bone tumor adopting an aggressive behavior, representing a challenge for clinical and radiographic diagnosis. This case report focused on a 31-year-old man with a large mandibular lesion with severe displacements of the mandibular teeth. Only a combination of paraclinical findings allows a definitive diagnosis to be made. Cervicofacial MRI revealed a low T1 signal intensity with peripheral enhancement after Gadolinium, and T2 hyperintense signal, while PET scan showed a moderate metabolism. Bone biopsy with immunohistochemical analysis allowed for def

Desmoplastic fibroma is a rare primary benign bone tumour that typically affects the long bones, mandible, and pelvis. It has a similar local aggressiveness to soft tissue fibromatosis. It rarely involves the small bones of the hand. We describe an extremely rare case of desmoplastic fibroma of the proximal phalanx of the hand in a patient who presented with an aggressively enlarging but painless mass on the left ring finger. Radiological features suggested malignancy; however, an initial biopsy revealed fibrotic tissue. Trans-metacarpal amputation of the ring and little fingers and soft tissu

Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) is a benign but aggressive intraosseous tumor. These lesions are categorized as central tumors of bone. They are composed of small fibroblasts in a setting of abundant extracellular material, which is rich in collagen. DF represents fewer than 0.1% of all bony tumors. They can be found in any part of the skeleton. Based upon on our literature review, we believe this is the second reported case of desmoplastic fibroma occurring in the zygoma area.
