Diffuse intra-abdominal fibromatosis in association with bilateral ovarian fibromatosis and oedema.

A case of bilateral ovarian enlargement secondary to massive ovarian oedema with underlying intra-abdominal and pelvic fibromatosis is presented. Bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and hysterectomy led to rapid progression of the intra-abdominal and pelvic fibromatosis, which was previously unsuspected. The case highlights the importance of recognizing massive oedema of the ovary as a distinct entity as it is a benign condition affecting young females and can be confused with ovarian neoplasm. In this case, the major morbidity was from the underlying diffuse intra-abdominal fibromatosis. Conserva

[Pelvic fibromatosis, as a cause of abdominal mass].

Pelvic fibromatosis was found in a 26-year-old patient who was operated on for a possible uterine myoma. The histopathological diagnosis revealed an idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis. A second operation was performed in order to complete the exercise of the mass. Immunohistochemical techniques backed the initial diagnosis of pelvic fibromatosis.

A fibromatosis case mimicking abdominal aorta aneurysm.

Retroperitoneal fibrosis is a rare fibrosing reactive process that may be confused with mesenteric fibromatosis. Abdominal aorta aneurysm is rare too and mostly develops secondary to Behcet's disease, trauma, and infection or connective tissue diseases. Incidence of aneurysms occurring as a result of atherosclerotic changes increases in postmenopausal period. Diagnosis can be established with arteriography, tomography, or magnetic resonance imaging associated with clinical findings. Tumors and cysts should be considered in differential diagnosis. Abdominal ultrasound and contrast-enhanced comp

[Multicentric extra-abdominal fibromatosis: a rare case].

Extra-abdominal aggressive fibromatosis is a benign fibroblastic neoplasia with an infiltrative nature and a high tendency of local recurrence. Here, we report on a very rare case of multicentric fibromatosis. Low complaints led to considerable size of the tumours. The aim of the multimodal treatment was a limb salvage procedure. Adjuvant radiation therapy and chemotherapy was necessary because of the renunciation of wide resections in favour of the functionality of the limb.

Giant aggressive intra-abdominal desmoid-type fibromatosis - case report.

INTRODUCTION: Aggressive fibromatosis, also known as desmoid tumour (DT), is a locally invasive soft tissue malignancy originating from fascial planes, connective tissue, and musculoaponeurotic structures of the muscles. The symptoms greatly depend on the location and size of the tumour. CASE REPORT: A 68-year-old male patient without any comorbidities with a large, palpable mass in the abdomen underwent computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen during diagnostic examination in September 2017 in another centre. The CT scan revealed a giant intraperitoneal 30×40cm tumour without signs of infiltr

[Abdominal fibromatosis in a 58-year-old male patient].

We report on a 58 year-old male patient, in whom abdominal fibromatosis occurred 3 years after laparotomy and irradiation on account of rectal cancer. Abdominal fibromatosis are very rare tumour-like fibrous lesions of the anterior muscular abdominal wall, mainly affecting fertile females. Men, however, are only rarely affected and without age preponderance. A hereditary or mutant generalized defect of growth regulation of fibrous tissue is considered to be the cause of this disease; moreover, trauma, hormonal effects and pregnancies often play a role as cofactors. Interestingly, there is a hi

Characteristics and outcome of intra-abdominal desmoid-type fibromatosis.

INTRODUCTION: Data about intra-abdominal desmoid-type fibromatosis (IA-DTFs) are limited. METHODS: We examined patients with IA-DTFs enrolled in the ALTITUDES study (NCT02867033). We compared their characteristics with those of other locations using chi-square and Wilcoxon tests, as appropriate, and assessed their outcomes using event-free survival (EFS). Association between primary location and EFS was determined using a Cox univariate model. Subgroup analysis was performed for patients initially managed with active surveillance (AS). RESULTS: 95/610 tumors (15.5%) enrolled in ALTITUDES wer

Aggressive fibromatosis of the abdominal wall, limbs and limb girdles.

BACKGROUND: Aggressive fibromatosis (AF) is a rare soft-tissue tumour. It is histologically benign but locally aggressive and destructive. Surgery is the mainstay of treatment. This was a review of patients treated at the Royal Marsden Hospital between 1986 and 2003. METHODS: Records of patients with abdominal wall (23) and limb or limb girdle (86) AF were studied to determine patient, tumour and treatment characteristics and outcome. Children and patients with intra-abdominal AF were excluded. The data were analysed by Cox regression to calculate univariate hazard ratios. RESULTS: Twenty-on

Complicated intra-abdominal fibromatosis masked by a perforated jejunal diverticulitis.

Desmoid-type fibromatosis is a rare group of locally aggressive fibroblastic proliferations of connective tissue. The incidence of synchronous intra-abdominal fibromatosis and jejunal diverticulitis is unreported. Both conditions typically present with non-specific symptoms and can be challenging to diagnose. We present the case of a female patient in her 70s with a diagnosis of intra-abdominal fibromatosis and perforated jejunal diverticulitis. This patient was found to have a large distal jejunal mesenteric mass and an adjoining perforated diverticulum intraoperatively. The diagnostic laparos

A Rare Case of Recurrent Intra-abdominal Desmoid-Type Fibromatosis.

Desmoid-type fibromatosis is an uncommon fibroblastic or myofibroblastic tumour arising in deep soft tissues with no metastatic potential. This case report presents a 78-year-old male patient with an incidental finding of desmoid-type fibromatosis of the abdomen with recurrence within two years and required surgical interventions. Primarily, a computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen and pelvis showed an incidental finding of a large soft tissue mass in the right iliac fossa mesentery measuring 11 by 8.5 cm. The patient underwent a successful elective exploratory laparotomy and resection of the

Management of serious complications in intra-abdominal desmoid-type fibromatosis.

BACKGROUND: Desmoid fibromatosis (DF) is a rare and locally infiltrative monoclonal fibroblastic proliferation arising from connective tissues, with lack of metastatic potential. About 10% of all DF cases are intra-abdominally sited. Complications in this site, due to the locally infiltrative nature of the disease, may be severe and potentially life threatening. However, data on incidence, management, and outcome of these complications are limited. AIM: Data of patients with sporadic or FAP-related intra-abdominal DF treated at Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori (INT) in Milano from 2005 to 2020 w

The outcome of extra-abdominal fibromatosis treated at a tertiary referral centre.

PURPOSE: To review the outcomes of patients with extra-abdominal fibromatosis treated at a tertiary referral centre. METHODS: A retrospective review of a series of 72 patients with fibromatosis treated at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) between 1980 and 2009, with a median follow up of 4 years (1-17 years). RESULTS: Forty patients were primary referrals, and 32 more had operations at the referring hospital. Five were treated non-operatively; 48 patients were treated by operation alone and 19 patients underwent surgery supplemented by adjuvant therapy. Recurrence was seen in 24

Necrotic vasculitis in a patient with abdominal fibromatosis and Guillain-Barré syndrome.

The case of a 65-year-old woman presenting with Guillain-Barré syndrome is herein reported. Tomographic investigation revealed abdominal and retroperitoneal fibromatosis. During her hospitalization, renal involvement ensued, and subsequent renal biopsy demonstrated findings of crescentic pauci-immune glomerulonephritis negative for ANCA antibodies and with characteristics indicative of necrotic angiitis. The simultaneous existence of the three diseases in the same patient as well as the relation between necrotic vasculitis and G-B syndrome is speculated, and the relevant literature is reviewed

Recurrent Abdominal Aggressive Fibromatosis with Incapacitating Hip Contracture - A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Aggressive fibromatosis (AF) is a fibroblastic locally aggressive neoplasm arising from the musculoaponeurotic stroma and has no metastatic potential. The high tendency of recurrence despite complete surgical resections makes the management of the condition onerous. It can result in significant morbidity with major functional loss due to the destruction of adjacent vital structures and organs. AF with hip flexion contracture is a very rare occurrence. CASE REPORT: A 20-year-old male presented with recurrent abdominal AF with severe hip flexion contracture and an unresectable tum

Not all abdominal masses after colorectal cancer surgery are malignant: intra-abdominal fibromatosis masquerading as recurrence.

AIM: Intra-abdominal fibromatosis is an unusual mesenchymal tumour that can be locally aggressive without any metastatic potential. Fibromatosis may simulate cancer recurrence on imaging surveillance for colorectal cancer follow-up. The optimal treatment of recurrent peritoneal malignancy is cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). Confirmatory biopsy of lesions suspicious for colorectal cancer recurrence may not be feasible, thereby rendering surgery the safest option. Our aim was to determine the incidence of fibromatosis in a cohort of patients unde

Misdiagnosis of aggressive fibromatosis of the abdominal wall: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Aggressive fibromatosis (AF) of abdominal wall is also called desmoid tumor, ligament tumor, fibrous tissue tumor hyperplasia, tendon membrane fibroma or soft tissue ligament fibroma, etc. Aggressive fibromatosis of abdominal wall was first described by MacFarlane in 1832, and it was named for the first time by Muller according to its general appearance and texture in 1838. This disease has been mistaken for a benign lesions for a long time because when the cells were examined by pathology often show normal mitosis, and distant metastases are not found clinically, but actually the d

Intra-abdominal Desmoid-Type Fibromatosis Mimicking Diverticulitis With Abscess: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Intra-abdominal desmoid-type fibromatosis (DF) rarely necessitates emergency surgery. However, the condition is difficult to diagnose preoperatively and can become life-threatening if left untreated. CASE REPORT: A 46-year-old man complained of fever and right lower quadrant pain. In computed tomography, the mesenteric side of the ascending colon demonstrated air and fluid collections, suggesting diverticulitis with abscess. After 2 weeks of conservative treatment with fasting, the patient started to consume food; nonetheless, fever returned. Colonoscopy and contrast enema detecte
