Fibronectin was isolated from a patient's plasma by affinity chromatography using gelatin-agarose. Biochemical and immunological tests proved the homogeneity of the fibronectin fraction. A therapy-resistant corneal ulcer following keratitis neuroparalytica was successfully treated with the isolated fibronectin. The ulcer healed within 26 days of fibronectin treatment (1 drop 6 X daily) and eight months have now passed without it recurring.

Frozen samples of minimal change glomerulopathy (MCG), and of membranous, segmental and diffuse lupus glomerulonephritis (MGN, SGN, DLGN) were studied to assess the distribution of tenascin (Ten), and the extradomains A and B (EDA- and EDB-) and oncofetal (Onc-) isoforms of cellular fibronectin (cFn). Different isoforms of fibronectin are derived from a single gene by alternative processing of the primary RNA transcript or by posttranslational modifications. Fibronectin mRNAs that include the alternatively spliced exons EIIIA, EIIIB, and V are prevalent during embryogenesis, and EIIIA and EIIIB reappear during wound healing. Fibronectin (FN) expression in six myeloma, two mature B-cell lines, and four T-cell lines was analyzed. All myeloma cell lines expressed FN at various levels, while mature B- and T-cell lines apparently had less FN. Fibronectin glomerulopathy occurs between the second and fifth decades of life in most patients, and it is known to be slowly progressive with mild proteinuria leading to kidney failure. The case of a 78-year-old woman with a rapid course of nephrotic syndrome due to fibronectin glomerulopathy is reported. She had proteinuria that rapidly increased to 6.8 g/day in a month and microscopic haematuria. OBJECTIVE: To determine if differential glycosylation of fibronectin (Fn) in inflammatory synovial fluid (SF) included expression of an oncofetal epitope (Onf Fn) heretofore detected only on Fn derived from embryonal or neoplastic tissue.

Glomerulopathy with fibronectin deposits is a rare hereditary kidney disease characterized by the extensive deposition of fibronectin in glomeruli, particularly in mesangial regions and subendothelial zones. The distribution of fibronectin in the palmar aponeurosis of patients with Dupuytren's contracture was compared with that of normal controls, using an immunofluorescent technique. Fibronectin (FN) is a glycoprotein whose plasma concentrations are reduced in many pathological conditions. In patients with hemoblastosis plasma FN was correlated with some clinical and biological parameters (stage of the disease, hepatosplenomegaly, infections and DIC), in order to assess its value as a tumor marker. The results suggest a poor relationship between FN levels and the course of the disease. However, the behaviour of the protein in relation with treatment was dynamic.
