Interocular transfer of two figural aftereffects was examined in orthotropes and strabismic subjects. Within both groups there were persons with an appreciable degree of stereoacuity and others who had little or none. Experimental evidence from a variety of sources has suggested that stereopsis depends upon binocularity of units in the geniculostriate system. For the tilt aftereffect, interocular transfer correlated with stereoacuity among both orthotropes and strabismics. For the spiral motion aftereffect, interocular transfer did not correlate with stereoacuity; it was present among orthotro

After viewing directional motion for a period of time, we experience a motion after-effect in which a subsequent stationary object appears to move in the opposite direction. A recent study demonstrates a novel motion after-effect that depends on the movement of the hand.

The duration of the movement aftereffect was measured in twenty-four normally binocular subjects and in eighteen subjects who lacked steropsis as a consequence of childhood strabismus. Aftereffects were generated monocularly and binocularly, and compared to those which occurred after adaption of one eye and testing with the other. Normal subjects were categorized on two indices of eye dominance, which involved sighting and rivalry tests. The monocular-aftereffect durations were slightly longer when the dominant eye was use, and interocular transfer from the dominant eye to the nondominant eye

The adaptation aftereffect plays a critical role in human development and survival. Existing studies have found that, compared with general individuals, individuals with learning disability, autism and dyslexia show a smaller amount of non-affective-based cognitive adaptation aftereffect. Nevertheless, it is unclear whether individuals with depression or depression tendency show similar phenomenon in the adaptation aftereffect, and whether such depression tendency occurs in the non-affective-based cognitive or emotional adaptation aftereffect. To address this question, the present study conduc

A growing amount of evidence suggests that viewing a photograph depicting motion activates the same direction-selective neurons involved in the perception of real motion. It has been shown that prolonged exposure (adaptation) to photographs depicting directional motion can induce motion adaptation and consequently motion aftereffect. The present study investigated whether adapting to photographs depicting humans, animals, and vehicles that move leftward or rightward also generates a positional aftereffect (the motion-induced position shift--MIPS), in which the perceived spatial position of a t

Dodwell and Humphrey (Psychol. Rev. 97, 78-79, 1990) have argued that colored aftereffects (CAEs) are contingent on the global geometries of local orientation and edge components in induction patterns. The spatiotopic dimensions underlying these geometries are derived from previous applications of the mathematics of continuous transformations (Lie groups) to the stimulus dynamics of perceptual invariance. In these terms, complementary CAEs induced by inspecting alternating colored bullseyes and spokes are attributed to the adaptation of orthogonal spatiotopic channels; the former characterized

Visuomanual prism adaptation (PA), which consists of pointing to visual targets while wearing prisms that shift the visual field, is one of the oldest experimental paradigms used to investigate sensorimotor plasticity. Since the 2000's, a growing scientific interest emerged for the expansion of PA to cognitive functions in several sensory modalities. The present work focused on the aftereffects of PA within the auditory modality. Recent studies showed changes in mental representation of auditory frequencies and a shift of divided auditory attention following PA. Moreover, one study demonstrate

Previous research on early deafness has primarily focused on the behavioral and neural changes in the intact visual and tactile modalities. However, how early deafness changes the interplay of these two modalities is not well understood. In the current study, we investigated the effect of auditory deprivation on visuo-tactile interaction by measuring the cross-modal motion aftereffect. Consistent with previous findings, motion aftereffect transferred between vision and touch in a bidirectional manner in hearing participants. However, for deaf participants, the cross-modal transfer occurred onl

Repetitive eye movements are known to produce motion aftereffect (MAE) when made to track a moving stimulus. Explanations typically centre on the retinal motion created in the peripheral visual field by the eye movement. This retinal motion is thought to induce perceived motion in the central test, either through the interaction between peripheral MAE and central target or by adaptation of mechanisms sensitive to the relative motion created between centre and surround. Less attention has been paid to possible extra-retinal contributions to MAE following eye movement. Prolonged eye movement lea

Where do we perceive an object to be when it is moving? Nijhawan [1] has reported that if a stationary test pattern is briefly flashed in spatial alignment with a moving one, the moving element actually appears displaced in the direction in which it is moving. Nijhawan postulates that this may be the result of a mechanism that predicts the future position of the moving element so as to compensate for the fact that the element will have moved position from the time at which the light left it to the time at which the observer becomes aware of it (as a result of the finite time taken for neural t

Analysis of the colour and motion of objects is widely believed to take place within segregated processing pathways in the primate visual system. However, it is apparent that this segregation cannot remain absolute and that there must be some capacity for integration across these sub-modalities. In this study, we have assessed the extent to which colour constitutes a separable entity in human motion processing by measuring the chromatic selectivity of two kinds of after-effect resulting from motion adaptation. First, the traditional motion after-effect, where prolonged inspection of a unidirec

PURPOSE: To determine whether subjects would demonstrate a negative directional aftereffect in a sparse visual environment after being trained to point accurately through a spectacle lens.
METHODS: Subjects were made myopic using a contact lens and then the myopia was corrected with a spectacle lens. Pointing behavior was used to assess directional localization. Training was carried out by showing subjects their pointing errors.
RESULTS: Seven of 10 subjects demonstrated a negative directional aftereffect after spectacle lens adaptation.
CONCLUSIONS: The presence of a negative directional a

In previous psychophysical work we found that luminance contrast is integrated over retinal area subject to contrast gain control. If different mechanisms perform this operation for a range of superimposed retinal regions of different sizes, this could provide the basis for size-coding. To test this idea we included two novel features in a standard adaptation paradigm to discount more pedestrian accounts of repulsive size-aftereffects. First, we used spatially jittering luminance-contrast adaptors to avoid simple contour displacement aftereffects. Second, we decoupled adaptor and target spatia

Damage to the temporal-parietal cortex in the right hemisphere often leads to spatial neglect-a disorder in which patients are unable to attend to sensory input from their contralesional (left) side. Neglect has been associated with both attentional and premotor deficits. That is, in addition to having difficulty with attending to the left side, patients are often slower to initiate leftward vs. rightward movements (i.e., directional hypokinesia). Previous research has indicated that a brief period of adaptation to rightward shifting prisms can reduce symptoms of neglect by adjusting the patie

If one adapts to a moving repetitive stimulus of stripes that is suddenly stopped, the stripes will appear to move backward. This apparent backward motion is the motion aftereffect (MAE), and its duration is a measure of its magnitude. If one eye adapts to the moving stimulus and the other eye experiences the aftereffect to the stationary stimulus, the aftereffect has been transferred from one eye to the other and is termed the interocular transfer of the MAE. Experimental evidence indicates that the degree of MAE transfer correlates with clinical binocularity. This study compares the MAE tran

Repetitive eye movement produces a compelling motion aftereffect (MAE). One mechanism thought to contribute to the illusory movement is an extra-retinal motion signal generated after adaptation. However, extra-retinal signals are also generated during pursuit. They modulate activity within cortical motion-processing area MST, helping transform retinal motion into motion in the world during an eye movement. Given the evidence that MST plays a key role in generating MAE, it may also become indirectly adapted by prolonged pursuit. To differentiate between these two extra-retinal mechanisms we exa

We outline a scheme for the way in which early vision may handle information about shading (luminance modulation, LM) and texture (contrast modulation, CM). Previous work on the detection of gratings has found no sub-threshold summation, and no cross-adaptation, between LM and CM patterns. This strongly implied separate channels for the detection of LM and CM structure. However, we now report experiments in which adapting to LM (or CM) gratings creates tilt aftereffects of similar magnitude on both LM and CM test gratings, and reduces the perceived strength (modulation depth) of LM and CM grat

Visual persistence was investigated in adults with and without dyslexia in order to determine whether the adults with dyslexia demonstrate problems similar to those found in childhood dyslexia. Using a temporal separation threshold measure and procedures derived from signal detection theory, sensitivity to sequentially presented form information was determined for the two types of adults. The results showed that the sensitivity of the adults with dyslexia was impaired relative to that of the nondisabled adults when parts of a test stimulus were presented to adjacent retinal areas. This result

The detection of spatiotemporal correlation in visual displays has been studied with stroboscopically presented random-noise patterns and with a signal-to-noise ratio paradigm in which the moving pattern was masked with spatiotemporal white noise. These methods reveal the ability of the visual system to detect correlation of spatiotemporal structures, rather than luminance contrast. The effects of stroboscopic rate, exposure duration, target size, and the extent of discrete spatial shifts were studied in both the central and the peripheral visual field. Evidence for orientation-selective and s
