The Able Worry More? Debt Delinquency, Financial Capability, and Financial Stress.

Research on the link between debt and financial stress is emerging. This study was one of the first attempts to examine the association between debt delinquency and financial stress and the moderating role of financial capability in the association. Delinquencies in three types of debts were examined: (a) mortgage, (b) credit card, and (c) student loan. With data from the 2018 U.S. National Financial Capability Study, multivariate regression results showed that payment delinquencies of mortgage, credit card and student loans were positively, while financial capability was negatively associated

Frequency of gambling, mental health, and financial stress among young adults.

Gambling is increasingly recognised as a public health issue with several developed governments and supranational bodies such as the EU developing legislation and policy measures to reduce gambling harms. This research examines data for over 4,200 young people from an Irish cohort study, finding that at 20 years of age, 7.2% were gambling weekly, while a further 7.6% gambled at least on a monthly basis; with males having approximately double the gambling rate than females. Multiple regression models, adjusting for socio-economic characteristics, number of friends, financial issues, and health

Financial stress response profiles and psychosocial functioning in low-income parents.

Parenting in the context of poverty is accompanied by heightened stress and heightened stakes. How parents respond to poverty-related stress has important implications for family functioning, but research investigating individual differences in low-income mothers' and fathers' responses to financial stress and their associations with parents' concurrent psychosocial adaptation is lacking. A better understanding of differences in stress responses among low-income parents is required to develop and tailor prevention programs that meet these families' needs. This study applies latent profile anal

Sirens of stress: Financial risk, time preferences, and post-traumatic stress disorder: Evidence from the Israel-Hamas Conflict.

This research explores the relationship between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), resulting from intense violence during the "Guardian of the Walls" operation in 2021, and economic decision-making. We surveyed civilians in Israel who experienced Gaza rocket attacks to understand the influence of PTSD on their financial decisions. The results revealed an interesting trend: PTSD sufferers showed a preference for immediate consumption over future savings and demonstrated a decrease in their willingness to take economic risks. These findings are significant because they offer insight into how

Pure stress urinary incontinence: analysis of prevalence, estimation of costs, and financial impact.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of pure stress urinary incontinence (P-SUI) and the role of urodynamic investigation (UDI) prior to surgery for stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is debated. Since the exact prevalence of P-SUI is not clear, its clinical and economic impact is not well defined. The aims of this study were to evaluate the prevalence of P-SUI in a population of women who underwent UDI for urinary incontinence (UI), also assessing: 1) the correspondence between clinical diagnosis of P-SUI and urodynamic findings; 2) the analysis of costs in terms of UDI and eventually post-UDI avoided s

Financial Toxicity of Nephrolithiasis: The First Assessment of the Economic Stresses of Kidney Stone Treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the financial toxicity (FT) related to kidney stone treatment. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional cohort study with multi-institutional in-person and online cohorts of stone formers.  Participants were surveyed using the validated COST tool (COmprehensive Score for financial Toxicity). The maximum score is 44 and lower scores indicate increased FT. "Moderate FT" was defined by COST scores between 25 and 14 points and "severe FT" for scores <14. Descriptive statistics, X2 tests, T tests, Spearman correlation, and logistic regression were performed using SPSS v28.

Impact of Stress and Financials on Romanian Infertile Women Accessing Assisted Reproductive Treatment.

Around 20% of couples worldwide are affected by infertility issues, with numbers in the European Union reaching as high as 25%, while access to reproductive care varies significantly by geopolitical and country-specific variables. The purpose of this research is to shed light on the unique social, psychological, and financial difficulties faced by Romanian couples seeking access to assisted reproductive therapy (ART). A cross-sectional study was conducted between 2017 and 2019 to involve women who accessed ART at fertility clinics in Romania by completing two infertility surveys. We analyzed t

Financial stress and sleep duration in immune and neuroendocrine patterning. An analytical triangulation in ELSA.

BACKGROUND: Proinflammatory and neuroendocrine mediators are implicated in disease aetiopathogenesis. Stress increases concentrations of immune-neuroendocrine biomarkers through a complex network of brain-body signalling pathways. Suboptimal sleep further modulates these processes by altering major effector systems that sensitise the brain to stress. Given the ubiquitous, impactful nature of material deprivation, we tested for a synergistic association of financial stress and suboptimal sleep with these molecular processes. METHODS: With data drawn from the English Longitudinal Study of Agein

Effects of financial stress on drinking amount and price paid: Australian longitudinal household data.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: This study estimated within-household differences in alcohol consumption, alcohol expenditure, price paid per standard drink and the proportion of household expenditure spent on alcohol between periods with and without financial stress. It also estimated whether these outcomes differed in the year after households no longer met criteria for financial stress. DESIGN: Longitudinal household panel study using repeated annual observations from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia survey, with within-household comparisons across periods with and without finan

Negative impact of chronic pandemic-specific financial stress on food security among college students.

Since the pandemic started, food insecurity has become a more serious issue for U.S. college students. The study goals were to evaluate whether pandemic-specific stress contributes to current food insecurity (as of February-March of 2022) and to determine which student characteristics are associated with food insecurity. We used the 2022 Spring American College Health Association-National College Health Assessment data (n = 620) collected at a public university. We estimated two multiple logistic regression models. The odds of having very low food security (OR = 8.65, 95% CI = 4.84:15.43) and

Banking Status as a Moderator of Outcomes in a Randomized Controlled Trial Targeting Financial Stress and Smoking.

BACKGROUND: Financial capability is an understudied social determinant of health (SDoH). Bank account ownership, an indicator of financial capability, has been linked to better health. No research has explored how bank account ownership relates to health behaviors, such as tobacco use. OBJECTIVES: To examine participant characteristics, intervention use, and intervention outcomes among subgroups of unbanked and banked participants enrolled in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) that integrated financial coaching and SDoH referrals into smoking cessation treatment for low-income individuals (N

On the Stress-Strength Reliability of Transmuted GEV Random Variables with Applications to Financial Assets Selection.

In reliability contexts, probabilities of the type R=P(X<Y), where X and Y are random variables, have shown to be useful tools to compare the performance of these stochastic entities. By considering that both X and Y follow a transmuted generalized extreme-value (TGEV) distribution, new analytical relationships were derived for R in terms of special functions. The results hereby obtained are more flexible when compared to similar results found in the literature. To highlight the applicability and correctness of our results, we conducted a Monte-Carlo simulation study and investigated the use o

Exploring veteran and non-veteran nursing student satisfaction with life utilizing marginality and financial stress.

BACKGROUND: The projected nursing shortage in the United States is 500,000 by 2030, and approximately 40,000 veterans who are attending nursing school in the United States can contribute to reducing this shortage. Nursing students experience numerous internal and external stressors during school which can contribute to high levels or anxiety, delayed graduation, or even dropout. This problem can ultimately have a negative effect on the number of nurses entering the workforce, worsening the shortage. PURPOSE: This study explored the concepts of financial stress, marginality, and satisfaction w
