Injuries from firearms in hunting activities.

BACKGROUND: Recreational hunting is a very popular sport, and frequently involves firearms. Few studies address the pattern of firearm injuries occurring with hunting and how they differ from firearm injuries not associated with hunting. PURPOSE: A nation wide database will provide an overall perspective of the scope of the problem and types of injuries. METHODS: Our data were obtained from the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research Firearm Injury Surveillance Study 1993-2008 (ICPSR 30543). It was statistically analyzed for demographic and injury patterns using SUDAAN

The risk of involuntary firearms discharge.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether unintended muscle activity induced by motor overflow can result in the unintentional discharge of a firearm. BACKGROUND: In the past few years an increasing number of people have been injured, sometimes fatally, as a result of police weapons being discharged involuntarily. METHODS: Two experiments were performed using a pistol fitted with sensors to register the pressure exerted on the hand stock and the trigger. In Study 1, 34 police officers reacted to a set case using the prepared pistol. In Study 2, 25 participants performed 13 tasks requiring the use o

[Facial nerve injuries caused by firearms].

In the period from 1990 to 1994, 52 facial nerve injuries caused by fragments firearm projectiles were managed. Their features (localization, severity and extensiveness) were correlated with 37 nerve injuries in blunt head injuries with fracture of temporal bone. In blunt head injuries, 81.1% patients were with the nerve lesion in the area of geniculate ganglion (labyrinthine and tympanic segment). Compression of nerve with bone fragments of fallopian tube was found in 56.8% cases, the cleft of neural sheath and intraneural hematoma were rarer, while the nerve tear was not found in any injured

DNA recovery from 3D printed firearms.

Over the last few years, additive manufacturing, by means of fused deposition modelling 3D printing, has become increasingly popular and accessible due to the relative low costs, flexibility, and continually lowering barriers for entry. Unfortunately, while this technology is not only used by hobbyists for creative or practical creation of custom objects using a variety of thermoplastic materials, they can also be used in the manufacture of firearms. From fully printed to hybrid designs, AM/3D printing has been used to produce parts for fully functional firearms capable of discharging conventi

Exploring whether mental health crisis text conversations that include discussion of firearms differ from those without firearms.

BACKGROUND: Firearm violence represents a public health crisis in the United States. Yet, there is limited knowledge about how firearms are discussed in the context of mental health emergencies representing a major gap in the current research literature. This study addresses this gap by examining whether the content of mental health crisis text conversations that mention firearms differ from those that do not mention firearms in a large, unique dataset from a national crisis text line. METHODS: We examined data from over 3.2 million conversations between texters to Crisis Text Line and volunt

Trauma, firearms, and pregnancy: Beyond the cushion.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy introduces unique anatomical and physiological changes that could influence injury susceptibility, including redistribution of abdominal organs and adipose tissue that could provide a protective "cushion effect" against penetrating trauma. This study aimed to understand how injury patterns and clinical outcomes differ between pregnant trauma patients (PTPs) and their non-pregnant counterparts presenting after penetrating trauma, hypothesizing that PTPs have a lower mortality risk and incur less severe abdominal injuries due to the proposed cushion effect. METHODS: The 20

Epidemiology of orthopaedic fractures due to firearms.

The majority of firearm injuries involve the extremities and have concomitant orthopaedic injuries. National data on the epidemiology of wounds caused by firearms may better inform physicians and identify areas of public health intervention. We conducted an analysis of a national database to describe the epidemiology of orthopaedic firearm injuries in the United States. The Nationwide Inpatient Sample 2001-2013 database was queried for adult patients with fractures excluding those of the skull using injury billing codes. Characterization of injury was determined using External Cause of Injury

The Impact of Firearm Legislation on Firearm Deaths, 1991-2017.

Firearm violence is a major public health concern in the USA with firearm suicide and homicide accounting for the majority of gun deaths. The present work seeks to explore the role of firearm legislation in reducing suicide and homicide rates. Using the State Firearm Law Database (www.statefirearmlaws.org), suicide and homicide rates were compared across the 50 US states from 1991 to 2017. A firearm regulations index was computed to represent the total number of state firearm laws. Generalized estimating equations were used to explore population-level increases or decreases in firearm regulati

Carrying Firearms and Suicide Risk Among Adolescents.

IMPORTANCE: Firearms are the most lethal method of suicide across all ages, with case fatality rates exceeding 90%, warranting urgent public health concern. Understanding how carrying of firearms by adolescents and suicide risk vary by race and ethnicity and by stringency of state firearm laws may inform prevention strategies. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the carrying of firearms is associated with suicide attempts among adolescents and whether this association differs by race and ethnicity and by strength of state firearm laws. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This secondary data analy

Firearms Screening in the Pediatric Inpatient Setting.

OBJECTIVES: Firearm-related deaths remain a top cause of mortality in American children and adolescents. In a 2012 policy statement, the American Academy of Pediatrics urged pediatricians to incorporate questions about the availability of firearms into their patient history taking. We aim to evaluate the frequency of screening for home firearms in an academic tertiary-care hospital inpatient setting. METHODS: This retrospective chart review examined patients with the following pediatric diagnoses admitted to a tertiary-care pediatric hospital from 2006 to 2015: asthma, bronchiolitis, cellulit

[Danger from exploding fireworks and blank firearms].

Explosive amusement and deterrent articles such as New Year's Eve cannons and rockets, toy pistols, and blank guns are not at all harmless items. Their potential dangerousness is often extremely underestimated. Two damaging mechanisms are important: during explosions, high pressures and temperatures develop and a considerable sound pressure level can be measured. If the explosion happens near the human body (intentionally or inadvertently), not only superficial lesions can occur, but also (mainly due to contact shots) serious, deep-seated tissue damage, especially in the head and neck region w

An interesting reason for chronic sinusitis: firearms injury.

Various kinds of etiological factors play a role in chronic sinusitis, and foreign bodies in the sinuses are one of the etiological factors. A 44-year-old man attended our outpatient clinic with complaints of headache, nasal congestion, and postnasal drainage. He had a history of gunshot accident 1 year ago, and his paranasal computed tomography revealed a bullet-shaped, radiopaque foreign body in the right maxillary sinus floor. With the patient under general anesthesia, the foreign body was removed endoscopically. One year after the surgical removal, the patient became free of nasal symptoms

[Acoustic trauma from firearms: study of auditory function].

This article deals with the shift in audiometric tracings brought about by the discharge of firearms (acute acoustic trauma). The study included 60 subjects with normal hearing, between 18 and 20 years of age. Each individual shot 25 bullets in about 5 minutes, at an intensity level calculated at 163 dB. None of them related antecedents of sensorineural deafness. The audiometric examinations were performed as follows: the first one prior to the experiment, the second immediately after the series of shots, and others 8 and 40 hours later. These are the conclusions drawn out by the AA.: the most

Suicidal childhood deaths with firearms in Antalya, Turkey.

The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics of suicidal childhood deaths with the use of firearms that occurred from 2000 to 2009 in Antalya. The autopsy reports of the Antalya branch of the Turkish Forensic Medicine Council and judicial records were reviewed retrospectively. There were 60 suicidal deaths between 0 and 18 years of age. Firearms were used in 20 cases (11 males, 9 females). The shotgun (n = 15) was the most frequently used weapon. The site of bullet entries were the chest (n = 6), abdomen (n = 5), right temple (n = 5), mouth (n = 2) and neck (n = 2). Most suic

Firearm assaults against US law enforcement officers in the line-of-duty: Associations with firearm ownership and state firearm laws.

Law enforcement officers are disproportionately affected by occupational injury. Firearm violence is the second leading cause of occupational mortality for this group behind motor vehicle crashes. In the general population, greater firearm ownership and weaker firearm laws are associated with increased firearm violence incidence. It is plausible that a high prevalence of firearms could also be associated with a greater incidence of LEO assault with a firearm. Using data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation's, Uniform Crime Reporting, Police Employee Data for 2006-2016, we conducted a panel

Occupational access to firearms and firearm-related suicide among US workers.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between occupational access to firearms and firearm-related suicide, adjusting for worker demographics and rural residence. METHODS: We conducted a mortality case-control study using National Violent Death Reporting System data (2013-2023). Occupational access was defined as employment in jobs involving firearm use. Firearm-related suicides were compared with non-firearm suicides using multivariable logistic regression, with sex-stratified models estimating odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: Workers with occupational firearm a

Female suicides in Berlin with the use of firearms.

The Statistical Office of Berlin recorded a total of 5488 suicides within the 10-year period 1990-1999 (3550 males, 1938 females). Firearms were used in 238 cases (218 males, 20 females). An autopsy was performed in 19 of the 20 female cases. The women's ages ranged from 21 to 88 years. Their marital status was single (n=6), married (n=5), divorced (n=5) and widowed (n=3). Eight of the women had one or more children. A suicide note was found in eight cases; six women had a history of psychiatric illness, and six had previously attempted suicide. Predominant among the suicide motives were menta
