Antacid medication inhibits digestion of dietary proteins and causes food allergy: a fish allergy model in BALB/c mice.

BACKGROUND: Digestible proteins were supposed to be irrelevant for oral sensitization and induction of food allergy. Approximately 10% of the adult population uses antacids for the treatment of dyspeptic disorders, drugs that hinder peptic digestion. In these patients, proteins that are normally degradable might act as food allergens. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to study the influence of antacid intake on the allergenicity of dietary proteins, taking sturgeon caviar and parvalbumin, the major fish allergen, as examples. METHODS: Caviar proteins and recombinant parvalbumin from carp, rCyp c 1, were a

Magnesium status in freshwater fish, common carp (Cyprinus carpio, L.) and the dietary protein-magnesium interaction.

Common carp juveniles were fed for 9 weeks one of the eight semipurified diets containing graded levels of magnesium, 0.08, 0.6, 1.1, 3, 2 g Mg kg(-1) and 25 or 44% protein.Fish growth and feed utilization were significantly affected by both Mg and protein levels in the diets. Significant interaction between these two studied variables existed in relation to the fish performance as well as to mean deposition rate of several minerals in common carp body. The fish fed diets containing 0.08 g Mg kg(-1) had reduced growth and developed deficiency signs such as muscle flaccidity and skin hemorrhage

Renal cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase products are altered in polycystic kidneys and by dietary soy protein and fish oil treatment in the Han:SPRD-Cy rat.

SCOPE: Dietary fish oil (FO) and soy protein (SP) are two interventions that slow disease progression in the Han:SPRD-Cy rat model of polycystic kidney disease (PKD). Inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX)-derived eicosanoids also reduces disease progression, but the role of lipoxygenase (LOX) products in this disease is not known. METHODS AND RESULTS: Since dietary FO and SP have been shown to alter eicosanoid formation via differing mechanisms, Han:SPRD-Cy rats were given diets containing either casein protein (CP) or SP, and soy oil (SO) or FO. Analysis of eicosanoids revealed that renal COX p

Exploring animal protein sources against prevent age-related short-term memory decline in mice: Dietary fish (Alaska Pollock) protein exhibits superior protective effects.

Dietary factors, particularly proteins, have been extensively explored to combat cognitive impairment. We have previously reported that dietary fish (Alaska Pollock) protein (APP) is more effective than casein (CAS) or fish oil in maintaining short-term memory in senescence-accelerated mice prone 10 (SAMP10). To examine the specificity of the protective effect of APP intakes against short-term memory decline, we assessed the impact of various dietary animal proteins, including APP, CAS, chicken breast protein (CP), and whey protein (WP), against age-related cognitive function in SAMP10 mice. Lack of Benefit of Early Intervention with Dietary Flax and Fish Oil and Soy Protein in Orthologous Rodent Models of Human Hereditary Polycystic Kidney Disease.

Rationale for dietary advice in polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is based in part on animal studies that have examined non-orthologous models with progressive development of cystic disease. Since no model completely mimics human PKD, the purpose of the current studies was to examine the effects of dietary soy protein (compared to casein) or oils enriched in omega-3 fatty acids (fish or flax oil compared to soy oil) on early disease progression in two orthologous models of PKD. The models studied were Pkd2WS25/- mice as a model of autosomal dominant PKD, and PCK rats as a model of autosomal rece

Distinct effects of dietary flax compared to fish oil, soy protein compared to casein, and sex on the renal oxylipin profile in models of polycystic kidney disease.

Oxylipins are bioactive lipids derived from polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) that are important regulators of kidney function and health. Targeted lipidomic analyses of renal oxylipins from four studies of rodent models of renal disease were performed to investigate the differential effects of dietary flax compared to fish oil, soy protein compared to casein, and sex. Across all studies, dietary fish oil was more effective than flax oil in reducing n-6 PUFA derived oxylipins and elevating eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) derived oxylipins, whereas dietary flax oil r

Effects of Partial Replacing Fish Meal with Dietary Degossypolled Cottonseed Protein on Growth Performance, Intestinal Barrier, Immune Function and Antioxidant Response in Largemouth Bass (Micropterus salmoides).

The increasing need for aquafeed protein sources calls for sustainable substitutes for fish meal (FM). Degossypolled cottonseed protein (DCP) represents a promising plant-derived protein, but its impact on the intestinal health of carnivorous fish is not well understood. This study assessed how partial replacing FM with DCP affects growth performance, intestinal barrier integrity, immune function, and antioxidant status in juvenile largemouth bass. Five isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets were prepared, in which DCP replaced 0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, or 80% of the FM. Following an 8-week feeding pe

Influence of dietary magnesium on mineral, ascorbic acid and glutathione concentrations in tissues of a freshwater fish, the common carp.

Supplementation with dietary Mg at a minimum level of 0.06% seems to be essential to prevent the hypercalcinosis of the kidney and hepatopancreas in a fish, the common carp. Mg deficiency appears to have no effect on the Mg level in kidneys and hepatic tissue, whereas the Fe level in those tissues was significantly diminished by increasing dietary Mg supplementation up to 3.2 g.kg-1. Both hypercalcinosis and accumulation of Fe in soft tissues were more pronounced in fish offered diets high in protein (44%) compared to fish on low dietary protein (25%). The ascorbic acid in the hepatopancreas a

Effects of dietary protein intake on the oxidation of glutamate, glutamine, glucose and palmitate in tissues of largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides).

Largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides, a carnivorous fish native to North America) prefers to utilize amino acids as energy sources rather than glucose and fatty acids. However, little is known about the nutritional regulation of substrate oxidation in the fish. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine whether the oxidation of glutamate, glutamine, glucose and palmitate in its tissues might be influenced by dietary protein intake. Juvenile largemouth bass (initial weight 18.3 ± 0.1 g) were fed three isocaloric diets containing 40%, 45% and 50% protein for 8 weeks. The growth performan

Dietary Proteins Rapidly Altered the Microbial Composition in Rat Caecum.

Dietary proteins can alter gut microbial diversity. However, little is known about how gut bacteria respond to dietary proteins during short-term feeding. In the present study, PCR-DGGE analysis was performed to compare changes in gut microbial composition in rat caecum after rats were fed proteins from soy, pork, beef, chicken, fish and casein (control) for 2, 7 and 14 days. On day 2, differences were observed in microbial composition between groups of red meat (pork and beef) and white meat (chicken and fish) proteins. For a certain diet group, microbial composition showed a great change wit

Diet-Induced Shifts in the Hindgut Microbiome Leads to Subtle Changes in Gut and Liver Function of a Marine Herbivorous Fish.

AbstractThe diet of an organism can influence various biological processes, including digestion. By examining how dietary changes can shift gut physiology in an herbivorous fish, we can gain insight into what that species can tolerate in terms of dietary shifts. Thus, we investigated how gut mass, digestive enzyme activity, hindgut microbial diversity, levels of gastrointestinal fermentation, and hindgut and liver transcriptomics respond to dietary perturbations in the marine herbivorous fish Cebidichthys violaceus. Contrary to our expectations, fish fed an omnivore diet (45% protein) in the l

Interactive effects of water temperature and dietary protein on Nile tilapia: growth, immunity, and physiological health.

Optimizing fish performance depends on several factors, with dietary protein levels and rearing temperature playing important roles. In this study, Nile tilapia fingerlings (Oreochromis niloticus) weighing an average of 20.00 ± 1.26 g were divided into nine groups (in three replicates). Each group was subjected to different water temperatures (26 °C, 28 °C, and 30 °C) and received one of three dietary protein levels (20%, 25%, and 30%) for two months. Our findings indicate that higher temperatures, particularly at 30 °C, increased water electrical conductivity and total dissolved salts, especi
