Recovery of mercury-contaminated fisheries.

In this paper, we synthesize available information on the links between changes in ecosystem loading of inorganic mercury (Hg) and levels of methylmercury (MeHg) in fish. Although it is widely hypothesized that increased Hg load to aquatic ecosystems leads to increases in MeHg in fish, there is limited quantitative data to test this hypothesis. Here we examine the available evidence from a range of sources: studies of ecosystems contaminated by industrial discharges, observations of fish MeHg responses to changes in atmospheric load, studies over space and environmental gradients, and experime

Density-dependent growth in 'catch-and-wait' fisheries has implications for fisheries management and Marine Protected Areas.

Stock enhancement activities provide an opportunity to examine density-dependent suppression of population biomass which is a fundamental issue for resource management and design of no-take-zones. We document 'catch-and-wait' fisheries enhancement where all but the largest lobsters are thrown back, recapturing them later after they have grown to a larger size. The residency, rate of return, and potential negative density-dependent effects of this activity are described using a combination of tagging and v-notching and by relating spatial growth patterns to population density defined with Catch

[Injuries in the maritime workers and fisheries].

This work is based on a Search conducted by IPSEMA and in course of publication. It was considered the accident trend of seafarers in the period 2004-2011, based on INAIL data. The category of vessels most affected by the accident phenomenon is passenger transport (about half of the cases), followed by cargo ships (20.2%) and fishing boats (16.0%). The average age of the injured is equal to 41.6 years. Further evidence relating to the qualification of seafarers injured (mostly "sailor", "hub" and "small") and nationality (94% of Italians), while the main mechanism of injury on board is the tra

Beneath the Surface: Mental Health in Commercial Fisheries.

Commercial fishing is a dangerous occupation where injuries, stress, and traumatic events are common. This study determined probable Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) rates in a cohort of 142 commercial fishermen in the United States and assessed factors that influence PTSD outcomes and severity. Fishermen representing four fisheries were sampled: salmon gillnetters (Alaska), Dungeness crab (Oregon), scallopers and lobstermen (Massachusetts). Participants self-reported information on health, sleep, activity, and substance use through surveys, and responded to a brief PTSD screener (PC-PTSD

Illuminating the multidimensional contributions of small-scale fisheries.

Sustainable development aspires to "leave no one behind"1. Even so, limited attention has been paid to small-scale fisheries (SSF) and their importance in eradicating poverty, hunger and malnutrition. Through a collaborative and multidimensional data-driven approach, we have estimated that SSF provide at least 40% (37.3 million tonnes) of global fisheries catches and 2.3 billion people with, on average, 20% of their dietary intake across six key micronutrients essential for human health. Globally, the livelihood of 1 in every 12 people, nearly half of them women, depends at least partly on sma

Health and safety concerns in fisheries and aquaculture.

Only 10% of all foodborne illnesses in the United States are attributed to seafood, making seafood a relatively safe food commodity. The implementation of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points guidelines should make seafood consumption even safer. Concerns include closed-loop, indoor, water-recirculating production systems; harmful algal blooms in marine environments, which can cause paralytic, neurologic, amnesic, and diarrhetic shellfish poisonings and ciguatera fish poisoning; bacteria (such as Mycobacterium marinum and Streptococcus iniae) and nematode, cestode, trematode, and protoz

The precursors of governance in the Maine lobster fishery.

Collective action is more likely to occur and to be effective when it is consistent with the self-interest of the affected individuals. The Maine lobster fishery is an instructive example of biological and technological circumstances combining with individual self-interest to create conditions favorable to collective action. The model describes the way social structure emerges from the adaptive behavior of competing fishers. Fishers compete in two ways: in a scramble to find the lobsters first and by directly interfering in other fishers' ability to compete, i.e., by cutting their traps. Both

New Game-Theoretical Approach to Marketing Cooperatives in Fisheries.

While most game-theoretical models in fisheries deal with the conflict of exploitation of the same resource, unlike these models, the present paper is dedicated to marketing conflicts, always accounting for the underlying population dynamics. In the context of marketing cooperatives in fisheries, three models are combined: the classical fishing effort model based on logistic population dynamics, a game-theoretical model of the conflict between a marketing cooperative and its members, and a Cournot-type oligopoly market model. The latter, in particular, means that the market price is determined

Audiological findings among workers from Brazilian small-scale fisheries.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the noise exposure and hearing of fishermen from small-scale fisheries from the state of Paraná in Brazil. DESIGN: Participants of this cross-sectional study included 141 male fishermen, ages ranging from 18 to 77 yr old and 136 controls matched by socioeconomic level, age, and gender. We conducted personal noise dosimetry and interviewed the fishermen regarding their hearing and their job. Audiological testing performed included pure-tone audiometry in the 0.5 to 8 kHz frequency range, extended high-frequency audiometry in the 9 to 16 kHz range

Mercury transport and human exposure from global marine fisheries.

Human activities have increased the global circulation of mercury, a potent neurotoxin. Mercury can be converted into methylmercury, which biomagnifies along aquatic food chains and leads to high exposure in fish-eating populations. Here we quantify temporal trends in the ocean-to-land transport of total mercury and methylmercury from fisheries and we estimate potential human mercury intake through fish consumption in 175 countries. Mercury export from the ocean increased over time as a function of fishing pressure, especially on upper-trophic-level organisms. In 2014, over 13 metric tonnes of

Large fisheries declines linked to compound and extreme climate events.

Climate extremes are increasingly disrupting marine ecosystems and fisheries. However, evidence on extreme ocean temperature effects on fish stocks and fisheries is mixed, and the combined impacts of heat and productivity extremes remain unclear. Using three decades of global data encompassing 6659 time-series for 1246 species across 254 regions, we conduct a risk-based analysis to quantify how local extreme high temperatures and low ocean productivity that these species are exposed to, alone and together, affect local fisheries catches. These events, particularly when compounded, sharply incr

[Survey of Total Mercury Content in Fishery Products].

The total mercury content in 112 fishery products, purchased from Osaka city during 2013-2018, was measured using a heating vaporization mercury analyzer. The average total mercury content in all tuna processed products was found out to be 0.115 μg/g (median=0.070 μg/g). Notably, albacore tuna exhibited the highest mercury content with an average concentration of 0.301 μg/g (median=0.296 μg/g). The total mercury concentration of the fishery products, except processed tuna and Kezuribushi (comprising shavings of dried and smoked mackerel, sardine, as well as horse mackerel), was generally low (

Livelihoods and Fisheries Governance in a Contemporary Pacific Island Setting.

Inshore marine resources play an important role in the livelihoods of Pacific Island coastal communities. However, such reliance can be detrimental to inshore marine ecosystems. Understanding the livelihoods of coastal communities is important for devising relevant and effective fisheries management strategies. Semi-structured household interviews were conducted with householders in Langalanga Lagoon, Solomon Islands, to understand household livelihoods and resource governance in fishing-dependent communities. Households were engaged in a diverse range of livelihoods. Fishing, shell money prod

Adenovirus in fishery harbours and identification of contamination sources.

Adenoviruses (AdVs) are a major cause of clinical infections and have been proposed as indicators of water quality. However, quantitative data on the environmental prevalence of AdVs is lacking. We investigated the prevalence, distribution, seasonal occurrence, quantity, and genotype of AdVs in 13 fishing harbours in Taiwan. AdVs in the water samples were isolated by membrane filtration and the AdV DNA was extracted. Next, AdVs were detected using nested polymerase chain reaction. Genotyping and phylogenetic analysis were performed to identify various AdV genotypes present in the water samples

The overlooked role of food and cultural dimensions in recreational fisheries.

Our study examines the diversity of values within a superficially homogeneous recreational fishery and its relationship to angler diversity. We collected data on fishing preferences, behaviors, catch usage, and sociodemographics from 443 shore anglers across 10 cities in the lower Great Lakes. We identified five coherent dimensions, including food, cultural, leisure, challenge/performance, and social-financial centrality, consistent with multidimensional value structuring in recreational fisheries. Based on these patterns, anglers were classified into three data-driven groups along a food prov

Taxation of fisheries in Kenya: neither improving management nor raising revenue?

Fisheries have long been held to possess significant development potential across Africa, providing food security, livelihoods, and foreign exchange. Debates about their management have centred on the need to close access and on the role of devolution and co-management between central and local government. Because access restriction in practice requires licensing and levies, fisheries' fiscal treatment lies at the core of their sustainable management. Yet little attention has been given to whether such arrangements in low-income countries achieve either goal. This paper examines the Kenyan cas
