Insights into the Antimicrobial Activities and Metabolomes of Aquimarina (Flavobacteriaceae, Bacteroidetes) Species from the Rare Marine Biosphere.

Two novel natural products, the polyketide cuniculene and the peptide antibiotic aquimarin, were recently discovered from the marine bacterial genus Aquimarina. However, the diversity of the secondary metabolite biosynthetic gene clusters (SM-BGCs) in Aquimarina genomes indicates a far greater biosynthetic potential. In this study, nine representative Aquimarina strains were tested for antimicrobial activity against diverse human-pathogenic and marine microorganisms and subjected to metabolomic and genomic profiling. We found an inhibitory activity of most Aquimarina strains against Candida gl

Aequorivita gen. nov., a member of the family Flavobacteriaceae isolated from terrestrial and marine Antarctic habitats.

Several strains isolated from Antarctic winter sea water, sea-ice algal assemblages and quartz stone subliths were found to belong to a novel 16S rDNA sequence cluster within the family Flavobacteriaceae (Cytophaga-Flavobacterium-Bacteroides division). The strains were gram-negative, non-motile, psychrotolerant, strictly aerobic, chemoheterotrophic rod-shaped cells that contained orange or yellow carotenoid pigments and required yeast extract when grown in defined mineral-salts media. The requirement for sodium ions varied between strains. Results of DNA-DNA hybridization analysis were used to

Salinimicrobium aquimaris sp. nov., a novel Flavobacteriaceae member isolated from seawater in the tidal region of Danzhou, Hainan Island.

A yellow, Gram-stain-negative, facultatively anaerobic and rod-shaped strain, designated as HB62T, was isolated from seawater in the tidal region of Danzhou, Hainan Island, People's Republic of China. Growth of strain HB62T occurs at 16-40 °C, 0.5-10.0% (w/v) and pH 6.0-9.5 with the optima of 37 °C, 1.5-2.0% (w/v) and pH 6.5-7.0. Strain HB62T could grow anaerobically by using nitrate and sulphate as electron acceptors. The 16S rRNA gene sequence identity analysis showed that strain HB62T shared the highest sequence identity of 98.0% with Salinimicrobium soli CAU 1287T and those of ≤97.9% and ≤

Unveiling the novel role of several Flavobacteriaceae isolates: Cultivable bacteria associated with Porolithon onkodes induce Pocillopora damicornis larval settlement and metamorphosis.

Crustose coralline algae (CCA) are pivotal for coral larval settlement and metamorphosis, yet the functional roles of their associated bacteria in this critical process remain underexplored. Here, we systematically isolated 554 cultivable bacteria from the dominant CCA species Porolithon onkodes and assessed their ability to induce larval settlement and metamorphosis of Pocillopora damicornis. The isolates were dominated by Pseudomonadota (50.72%) and Bacteroidota (32.85%), with 57.40% exhibiting < 98.60% 16S rRNA gene similarity to their closest type-strain matches, suggesting that Por. onkod

Can Microbiome Modulate Regenerative Capacity? A Comparative Microbiome Study Reveals a Dominant Presence of Flavobacteriaceae in Blastema Tissue During Axolotl Limb Regeneration.

The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is renowned for its remarkable regenerative capabilities, which are not diminished by the transition from a neotenic to a metamorphic state. This study explored the microbiome dynamics in axolotl limb regeneration by examining the microbial communities present in neotenic and metamorphic axolotls at two critical stages of limb regeneration: pre-amputation and during blastema formation. Utilizing 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, we investigated the variations in microbiome profiles associated with different developmental and regenerative states. Our findings revea

RATA: A novel class A carbapenemase with broad geographic distribution and potential for global spread.

Carbapenem resistance's global proliferation poses a significant public health challenge. The primary resistance mechanism is carbapenemase production. In this study, we discovered a novel carbapenemase, RATA, located on the chromosome of Riemerella anatipestifer isolates. This enzyme shares ≤52 % amino acid sequence identity with other known β-lactamases. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests and kinetic assays demonstrated that RATA could hydrolyze not only penicillins and extended-spectrum cephalosporins but also monobactams, cephamycins, and carbapenems. Furthermore, its activity was readily

IND-6, a highly divergent IND-type metallo-beta-lactamase from Chryseobacterium indologenes strain 597 isolated in Burkina Faso.

The genus Chryseobacterium and other genera belonging to the family Flavobacteriaceae include organisms that can behave as human pathogens and are known to cause different kinds of infections. Several species of Flavobacteriaceae, including Chryseobacterium indologenes, are naturally resistant to beta-lactam antibiotics (including carbapenems), due to the production of a resident metallo-beta-lactamase. Although C. indologenes presently constitutes a limited clinical threat, the incidence of infections caused by this organism is increasing in some settings, where isolates that exhibit multidru

A longitudinal study of the infant nasopharyngeal microbiota: The effects of age, illness and antibiotic use in a cohort of South East Asian children.

A longitudinal study was undertaken in infants living in the Maela refugee camp on the Thailand-Myanmar border between 2007 and 2010. Nasopharyngeal swabs were collected monthly, from birth to 24 months of age, with additional swabs taken if the infant was diagnosed with pneumonia according to WHO clinical criteria. At the time of collection, swabs were cultured for Streptococcus pneumoniae and multiple serotype carriage was assessed. The bacterial 16S rRNA gene profiles of 544 swabs from 21 infants were analysed to see how the microbiota changes with age, respiratory infection, antibiotic con

Mortality Risk and Antibiotic Therapy for Patients with Infections Caused by Elizabethkingia Species-A Meta-Analysis.

Background and Objectives: Patients with infections caused by Elizabethkingia species require prompt identification and effective antibiotic treatment since these spp. are typically resistant to multiple antibiotics and variable susceptibility patterns. Understanding the mortality risk of this disease is difficult because of the relatively low incidence of infections caused by Elizabethkingia spp. and the lack of published systematic evaluations of the risk factors for mortality. The aim of the present study was to investigate risk factors for mortality in patients with infections caused by El

Genomic and phenotypic characterization of 26 novel marine bacterial strains with relevant biogeochemical roles and widespread presence across the global ocean.

Prokaryotes dominate global oceans and shape biogeochemical cycles, yet most taxa remain uncultured and uncharacterized as of today. Here we present the characterization of 26 novel marine bacterial strains from a large isolate collection obtained from Blanes Bay (NW Mediterranean) microcosm experiments made in the four seasons. Morphological, cultural, biochemical, physiological, nutritional, genomic, and phylogenomic analyses were used to characterize and phylogenetically place the novel isolates. The strains represent 23 novel bacterial species and six novel genera: three novel species pert

Morphological plasticity of endophytic Chitinophaga pinensis.

Environmental changes, whether due to climate change or human influences, compromise the resilience of plants to biotic and abiotic stresses, such as pathogens, drought and heat. Plant microbiota are known to promote plant resilience. To be able to harness the power of the plant microbiome we need to identify microbiota with health-promoting properties. Recent studies have demonstrated that the bacterium Chitinophaga pinensis enhances plant health and increases resistance to fungal infections. Here, we show that C. pinensis exhibits an unusually high morphological plasticity, switching between
