Evaluation of the CatanDog's tag to prevent flea infestations, inhibit flea reproduction or repel existing flea infestations on cats.

To evaluate the ability of the CatanDog's tag to eliminate fleas, inhibit egg production and prevent flea infestations, six domestic shorthaired cats were randomly allocated to two treatment groups and housed individually in stainless steel metabolic cages. Three cats were each fitted with a CatanDog's tag; the other three cats were not fitted with tags and served as controls. Following a 42-day acclimation period, each of the six cats was infested with 100, 1-3 day post-emergence, adult Ctenocephalides felis felis (Bouché) on days 0, 7, 14, 21, and 27. Flea egg production was determined by co

Biology, treatment, and control of flea and tick infestations.

Flea and tick infestations are common and elimination can be expensive and time consuming. Many advances in control of fleas can be directly linked to improved knowledge of the intricacies of flea host associations, reproduction, and survival in the premises. Understanding tick biology and ecology is far more difficult than with fleas, because North America can have up to 9 different tick species infesting cats and dogs compared to 1 primary flea species. Effective tick control is more difficult to achieve than effective flea control, because of the abundance of potential alternative hosts in

Flea infestations in companion animals: Challenges in heterogeneous subtropical environments.

Fleas are important for their role as parasites causing pulicosis or tungiasis, and as vectors of pathogens that can cause diseases in humans and other animals, in tropical and subtropical regions, with a disproportionate effect linked to contexts of structural poverty and social exclusion. This study evaluated the risk factors for flea parasitism in dogs and cats from urban (Ur) and rural (Ru) households in Puerto Iguazú, Argentina, through seasonal sampling between March 2017 and February 2018. Prevalence (P), mean intensity, and mean abundance of the host-associated variable were calculated

Survey of flea infestation in cats and dogs in Western Andalusia, Spain: Seasonality and other risk factors for flea infestation.

This epidemiological survey aims to provide an update on the main flea species that parasitize domestic animals in the Western Andalusia assessing several ecological features that could be considered as possible risk factors for flea infestation. Over a 19-month period (June 2021 to January 2023), we obtained a total of 802 flea samples from 182 dogs (Canis lupus familiaris, Carnivora: Canidae, Linnaeus, 1758) and 78 cats (Felis silvestris catus, Carnivora: Felidae, Schreber, 1775). For each parasitized host, an epidemiological survey was completed, including the following information: geograp

A field trial of spinosad for the treatment and prevention of flea infestation in shepherd dogs living in close proximity to flea-infested sheep.

BACKGROUND: Three flea species, Pulex irritans, Ctenocephalides canis and C. felis parasitize shepherd dogs living on sheep farms in Greece. The aim of this randomized, blinded, placebo-controlled trial was to examine the efficacy of spinosad, when administered three times every 4 weeks, as the only intervention to treat and prevent flea infestations in shepherd dogs living on sheep farms. METHODS: Thirty dogs living on sheep farms and infested by at least 24 fleas were randomly allocated into equal groups. Group A dogs received spinosad (45-70 mg/kg body weight), every 4 weeks for three admi

Impacts of ectoparasite flea infestation on gut microbiota of the Meriones unguiculatus in a rodent-flea system.

Fleas, along with one of their host species, Meriones unguiculatus, possess the capability to act as vectors in the transmission of plague. Parasitism by fleas may markedly influence the physiology and immune system of their hosts. Gut microbiota plays an important role in the growth and development of rodents. However, few studies have explored the impacts of ectoparasitic flea on the gut microbiome of rodents. This study investigated the immunological responses and changes in the gut microbial diversity and composition in both wild and laboratory rodents infested with fleas and laboratory ro

Pathogenic bacterial species and the microbiome of cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) inhabiting flea-infested homes.

BACKGROUND: Ctenocephalides felis is a common ectoparasite of dogs and cats and can transmit a variety of pathogens including Bartonella and Rickettsia species. These bacteria, along with the known endosymbiont Wolbachia, are well-documented members of the C. felis microbiome, but species-level information is limited. Additionally, little is known about the variation in the C. felis microbiome in fleas from different sources and when different sequencing methods are applied to the same samples. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterize the flea microbiome using both short-read (V3/V4) and l

Severe cat flea infestation of dairy calves in Brazil.

An investigation was conducted into a severe flea infestation on dairy calves. Inspection of the dairy revealed a high infestation of Ctenocephalides felis felis on four calves and thousands of fleas in the stable where cows and calves were brought in for milking. A 3-month-old female calf was highly infested with fleas. The animal showed an evident lethargy, weight loss, as well as pale mucous membranes and dehydration. Hematological analysis revealed anemia, with 10% packed cell volume and a 1.72 x 10(6) microl(-1) erythrocyte count. Blood transfusions were performed and the flea infestation

Characterization of pruritus in canine atopic dermatitis, flea bite hypersensitivity and flea infestation and its role in diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: In dogs, flea infestation (FI), flea bite hypersensitivity (FBH) and canine atopic dermatitis (CAD) have been mainly characterized by their lesions but never by their pruritus. In clinical practice, many of these dogs exhibit only pruritus. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of pruritus in these dermatoses and their potential usefulness for diagnosis. ANIMALS: Dogs included were selected from the Oniris clinical data. Cases were selected in which the dogs had only one of the three dermatoses diagnosed. The diagnosis of CAD was bas

Fleas infesting pets in the era of emerging extra-intestinal nematodes.

Modifications in climatic conditions, movements of hosts and goods, changes in animal phenology and human behaviour and increase of wildlife, are presently concurring in the geographic spread of vectors and cardio-respiratory nematodes, e.g. Dirofilaria immitis, Angiostrongylus vasorum, Aelurostrongylus abstrusus and Capillaria aerophila. All these factors may also influence dispersion and clinical significance of fleas, thus posing relevant challenges in those regions where other parasites are emerging at the same time. Ctenocephalides felis, Ctenocephalides canis and Pulex irritans cause dis

Ixodid and flea infestations and associated bacteria on two sympatric felid species in South Texas.

Ixodid ticks and fleas parasitize wild felids and can transmit pathogens of veterinary and public health concern. We identified ixodid and flea species collected from sympatric South Texas bobcats, L. rufus, and ocelots, L. pardalis. Greater diversities of ixodids were found on both felids than in previous reports, with seven species in three genera on L. rufus and six species in three genera on L. pardalis. We report first findings of tropical horse tick, Dermacentor nitens, on L. rufus in Texas, and Ixodes keiransi on both felids in Texas. Although false cayenne tick, Amblyomma tenellum, nym

Why do cat flea infestations often occur on the upper limbs and trunk? Fleas do not fly.

Dear Editor, Some species of fleas belonging to the genera Ctenocephalides, Pulex, and Xenopsylla can infest human skin. Multiple, isolated or clustered, roundish, erythematous, pruritic papules are the most typical clinical presentation of flea infestation. These lesions are very often located on the legs and ankles, as fleas are wingless but have powerful hind legs that allow them to leap up to 30 cm from the ground. [...].

Flea diversity and infestation prevalence on rodents in a plague-endemic region of Uganda.

In Uganda, the West Nile region is the primary epidemiologic focus for plague. The aims of this study were to 1) describe flea-host associations within a plague-endemic region of Uganda, 2) compare flea loads between villages with or without a history of reported human plague cases and between sampling periods, and 3) determine vector loads on small mammal hosts in domestic, peridomestic, and sylvatic settings. We report that the roof rat, Rattus rattus, is the most common rodent collected in human dwellings in each of the 10 villages within the two districts sampled. These rats were commonly

Household insecticide uses and flea infestation in plague-endemic regions of Madagascar.

Insecticide use remains one of the most common strategies worldwide for controlling household pests and disease vectors, despite growing concerns over misuse, health risks, and the emergence of insecticide resistance. To document household insecticide use and flea infestation across a gradient of plague endemicity in Madagascar, we used a multidisciplinary approach. A descriptive household survey and an observational checklist were implemented with 422 respondents and combined with flea infestation assessment based on flea sampling from small mammals and candle traps. Household insecticide use

Seasonality and other risk factors for fleas infestations in domestic dogs and cats.

Fleas in the genus Ctenocephalides are the most clinically important parasitic arthropods of dogs and cats worldwide yet risk factors that might increase the risk of infestation in small animals remains unclear. Here we developed a supervised text mining approach analysing key aspects of flea epidemiology using electronic health records from domestic cats and dogs seen at a sentinel network of 191 voluntary veterinary practices across Great Britain between March 2014 and July 2020. Our methods identified fleas as likely to have been present during 22,276 of 1,902,016 cat consultations (1.17%)

Flea species infesting dogs in Florida and Bartonella spp. prevalence rates.

Several Bartonella spp. associated with fleas can induce a variety of clinical syndromes in both dogs and humans. However, few studies have investigated the prevalence of Bartonella in the blood of dogs and their fleas. The objectives of this study were to determine the genera of fleas infesting shelter dogs in Florida, the prevalence of Bartonella spp. within the fleas, and the prevalence of Bartonella spp. within the blood of healthy dogs from which the fleas were collected. Fleas, serum, and EDTA-anti-coagulated whole blood were collected from 80 healthy dogs, and total DNA was extracted fo
