Humming hummingbirds, insect flight tones and a model of animal flight sound.

Why do hummingbirds hum and insects whine when their wings flap in flight? Gutin proposed that a spinning propeller produces tonal sound because the location of the center of aerodynamic pressure on each blade oscillates relative to an external receiver. Animal wings also move, and in addition, aerodynamic force produced by animal wings fluctuates in magnitude and direction over the course of the wingbeat. Here, we modeled animal wing tone as the equal, opposite reaction to aerodynamic forces on the wing, using Lowson's equation for the sound field produced by a moving point force. Two assumpt

Allometric scales underlying animal flight: a mechanics-based approach.

Over the years, numerous studies have attempted to deduce scaling laws for the parameters associated with animal flight. These have been primarily empirical and have, moreover, tended to focus on one of the three volant groups, i.e. birds, bats or insects, with few attempts to seek common scaling behaviours. On the premise that there are underlying fundamental scales enabling animal flight regardless of species, a unified approach based on the mechanics of flight is developed. It is shown that the primary physical phenomena can be described in terms of four morphological parameters, the mass s

The evolutionary physiology of animal flight: paleobiological and present perspectives.

Recent geophysical analyses suggest the presence of a late Paleozoic oxygen pulse beginning in the late Devonian and continuing through to the late Carboniferous. During this period, plant terrestrialization and global carbon deposition resulted in a dramatic increase in atmospheric oxygen levels, ultimately yielding concentrations potentially as high as 35% relative to the contemporary value of 21%. Such hyperoxia of the late Paleozoic atmosphere may have physiologically facilitated the initial evolution of insect flight metabolism. Widespread gigantism in late Paleozoic insects and other art

Selection of artificial gravity by animals during suborbital rocket flights.

White rats selected preferred artificial gravity levels by locomotion in centrifuges consisting of two runways mounted in the nose of sounding rockets. Roll rate of the Aerobee 150A rocket was designed to produce an angular velocity of 45 r.p.m. during 5 min of free-fall, providing a gravity range range from 0.3 to 1.5 G depending on a subject's runway position. One animal was released at the high and one at the low gravity position in each flight. Animal positions were continuously recorded. Flight subjects were selected from about 100 trained animals adapted to the simulated launch environme

Revisiting the flight of Icarus: making human organs from PSCs with large animal chimeras.

While cell therapies hold great potential for treating many conditions, their utility for treating patients that require whole organ replacement is unclear. To address this challenge, we propose using genetically engineered "organ niches" in large animals to generate human organs from pluripotent stem cells and discuss the hurdles facing such strategies.

Soviet experiments aimed at investigating the influence of space flight factors on the physiology of animals and man.

Results are given of biological experiments on space ship-satellites II, III, IV and V, and of scientific investigations made during the flights of Cosmonauts Gagarin and Titov aboard space ships Vostok I and Vostok II. Physiological reactions to the action of the flight stress-factors are not of a pathological character. In the post-flight period no alterations in health conditions of either cosmonauts or animals were observed. At the same time some peculiarities which were revealed while analyzing physiological reactions and a number of biological indices require further investigations. The

Validation of the jugular venous reflux animal model by three-dimensional time-of-flight MRA with a clinical scanner.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: A rat model of jugular venous reflux (JVR) is widely used in studies of cerebral arteriovenous fistula, cerebral venous hypertension and chronic cerebral hypoperfusion. However, methods to validate the effectiveness of the operation are needed. METHODS: We performed neck 3-dimensional time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) with a clinical scanner in a rat model of JVR before and after the operation. High-resolution arterial angiography of the rat neck was acquired with maximum intensity projection. RESULTS: In the JVR model, the success of the operation w

Whole animal matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry of ticks - Are spectra of Ixodes ricinus nymphs influenced by environmental, spatial, and temporal factors?

In the recent years matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry (MS) has become a useful tool to characterize arthropod species and their different stages of development. It was reported for sand flies and mosquitoes at immature stages and also assumed for ticks that geographic location can have a subtle influence on MALDI-TOF mass spectra which allows the discrimination of animals with specific local variations of the MALDI-TOF MS phenotype. It is so far uncertain, however, if these mass-spectrometric differences are based on genetic variation or o

Forensic detection and quantification of methomyl in animal stomach contents using liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-Q-TOF/MS) and liquid Chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) in Japan.

Pesticide poisoning in animals is a rising forensic issue due to widespread chemical use. This study analyzed stomach contents from 44 deceased animals (domestic and wild) in Japan using liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-Q-TOF/MS) for non-targeted screening and liquid Chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) for quantification after Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe (QuEChERS) extraction. Non-target screening detected multiple pesticide classes, with carbamates and herbicides being the most prevalent. Methomyl was identified in 29 cas

Effects of clinostat-microgravity on bone and calcium metabolism in rats.

Decreases in bone minerals and tissue volume after space flight have been observed in humans and animals, with a variety of results. Such data obtained from space flight experiments have given unsatisfactory results due to short periods of space flight and differences in age, body weights, and strain of animals used. Therefore, ground-based animal models have been developed in order to elucidate changes in bone affected by space flight. For example, a tail-suspended rat model has been established to study the effects of microgravity on bones by producing hind limb unloading. However, problems

[Ultrastructure of the submandibular glands in rats kept in weightlessness].

Submandibular salivary glands of male rats weighing 330-350 g were examined after space flight and ground-based control study. Light microscopy was carried out using hematoxylin-eosin staining and PAS-reaction. Electron microscopy was performed using glutaraldehyde and osmium tetroxide fixation and contrasting according to Reynolds. Light microscopy revealed no destructive changes in the gland parenchyma; differences between flight and control rats remained within physiological limits. Electron microscopy of acinar cells of flight animals showed chromatin condensation, darkening of cells and n

Flexible strategies for flight control: an active role for the abdomen.

Moving animals orchestrate myriad motor systems in response to multimodal sensory inputs. Coordinating movement is particularly challenging in flight control, where animals deal with potential instability and multiple degrees of freedom of movement. Prior studies have focused on wings as the primary flight control structures, for which changes in angle of attack or shape are used to modulate lift and drag forces. However, other actuators that may impact flight performance are reflexively activated during flight. We investigated the visual-abdominal reflex displayed by the hawkmoth Manduca sext

The effect of microgravity on the autonomic nervous system of rhesus monkeys.

Gastric myoelectric activity and respiratory sinus arrhythmia of two monkeys flown on Bion 11 were investigated. During flight, vagal effects on cardiac and gastric function of the two animals varied differently: in one animal they decreased at an early flight stage and returned to the control level by the end of flight, whereas in the second monkey the trend was the opposite. The decrease was accompanied by space motion sickness symptoms.

Flight energetics of barn swallows across speeds: high aerodynamic efficiency, but low energy conversion efficiency.

Bird flight conversion efficiency (η) determines the amount of metabolic power (Pmet) transformed into mechanical power (Pmech) to remain aloft, and it is central to understanding animal flight energetics, yet it remains difficult to quantify. Using 13C-labelled sodium bicarbonate (NaBi) and particle image velocimetry (PIV), we measured Pmet and Pmech, respectively, in un-instrumented barn swallows (Hirundo rustica) flying across 7.8 to 13.6 m s-1 in a wind tunnel. Both Pmet and Pmech showed the expected U-shaped relationship with airspeed. Whole-animal η showed a shallow peak at 7% at 11 m s-

Pineal physiology in microgravity: relation to rat gonadal function aboard Cosmos 1887.

For the first time pineal glands obtained from 5 male rats flown aboard an orbiting satellite (Soviet Biosatellite #1887) were analyzed for their melatonin, serotonin (5-HT), 5-hydroxyindole acetic acid (5-HIAA), and calcium content. In addition, plasma 5-HT and 5-HIAA were measured. These parameters were compared to indicators of gonadal function: plasma testosterone concentration and spermatogonia development. Plasma melatonin was low at the time of euthanasia (lights on) and was not different among the experimental groups (flight animals, synchronous controls, and vivarium controls). Pineal

Low Back Pain During and After Spaceflight: A Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis.

Space flights can produce physiological changes in the spine, leading to the development of acute and chronic pain in passengers. However, there is a lack of comprehensive literature exploring physiological spine changes and acute and chronic pain in space passengers (astronauts and animals). The first aim of this study was to identify the physiological changes experienced by passengers (humans and animals) after space flight. The second aim was to identify the incidence of low back pain during and after space flight. This systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines and was pre

The effects of cosmic particle radiation on pocket mice aboard Apollo XVII: appendix II. Evaluation of oral, dental, and skeletal tissues.

A sparse neutrophilic leukocytic infiltrate was found in the gingival sulcus, both in the flight and the control animals, while no changes were observed in the palate. Mitoses in gingival and palatal tissues were in approximately equal numbers in all animal groups. The tongues of flight mice and controls contained areas characterized by vascular dilatation, separation of muscle bundles, and regressive and degenerative changes in muscle fibers. Mucous glands in the posterior part of the tongue of flight and control animals exhibited acinar distension. Also examined were the vertebral column; fe

Endocrine responses to space flights.

Simultaneously with human space flights several series of observations were performed by using experimental animals--mainly rats--exposed to space flights on board of special satellites BION-COSMOS or in Shuttle Transportation Systems (STS). The aims of these experiments were to study in more details: the mechanisms of the changes in bones and skeletal muscle, the alterations of the function of immune system, the radiation effects on organism, the mechanism of the changes of endocrine functions, the evaluation of the role of hormones in alteration of metabolic processes in organism.
