Positron emission tomography with fluorodeoxyglucose-F18 in an animal model of mania.

Intracerebroventricular (ICV) administration of ouabain to young adult rats has been suggested to model human bipolar mania. In the human condition, mania and bipolar depression are both associated with reductions in frontal cerebral metabolism. We utilized [(18)F]-fluorodeoxyglucose [(18)FDG] positron emission tomography (PET) to visualize glucose uptake in animals receiving ICV ouabain. Animals received 5 microl of 10(-)(3) M ouabain ICV, were anesthetized with isoflurane inhalation, and administered intraperitoneally with 0.5 mCi of (18)FDG. PET data were collected over 20 min 1 hour later.

Fluorodeoxyglucose F18 positron emission tomography in a case of slowly progressive pure alexia.

We describe a 71-year-old patient with slowly progressive pure alexia in which analysis of her fluorodeoxyglucose FDG-PET scan revealed an area of focal hypometabolism in the visual word form area. She presented with difficulty reading. Examination revealed pure alexia with preservation of other cognitive domains. Brain MRI revealed only slight atrophy. A Fluorodeoxyglucose F18 positron emission tomography scan revealed hypometabolism in the occipital cortex bilaterally, left greater than right, with normal metabolism elsewhere in the brain. This case highlights the utility of FDG-PET scan in

Multilocular Thymic Cyst with High F18 Fluorodeoxyglucose Uptake and Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Case Report.

Background: multilocular thymic cysts are uncommon acquired cysts in the anterior mediastinum caused by incomplete thymic involution. They may be associated with autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic sclerosis. Methods: a 61-year-old man with a history of rheumatoid arthritis for 8 years was referred to our unit because of a multiloculated mass in the anterior mediastinum with a high F18 fluorodeoxyglucose uptake at PET-CT scan. Histology showed a multilocular thymic cyst with lymphoid tissue, organized in germinal centers and internodal areas. Results: rheumatoid arth

Complete splenic vein tumour thrombus in primary gastric malignancy on F18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography-computed tomography.

Tumour thrombus is an uncommon complication with ominous outcomes. F18 FDG PET-CT scan helps in differentiating tumour thrombus from venous thrombus owing to its metabolic uptake similar to the tumour. We discuss an interesting case of gastric malignancy with complete splenic vein tumour thrombosis on initial presentation.

Paraneoplastic ocular sarcoidosis in the setting of recurrent rectal carcinoid tumor diagnosed by F18-fluorodeoxyglucose PET CT.

PURPOSE: Nuclear medicine imaging can provide a noninvasive means of distinguishing inflammatory mass lesions from oncologic intraocular tumors. OBSERVATION: We report a case of paraneoplastic ocular sarcoidosis with choroidal mass lesions that was initially concerning for choroidal metastasis of a primary carcinoid tumor. PET CT was utilized with two different tracers to characterize the choroidal mass as being FDG-avid, consistent with a sarcoid-like lesion, and lacking the Gallium (Ga-68) DOTATAE uptake of carcinoid tumor metastases. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPORTANCE: Functional imaging is valua

F18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography in the context of other imaging techniques and prognostic factors in multiple myeloma.

F18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) is a powerful tool to investigate the role of tumor metabolic activity and its suppression by therapy for cancer survival. As part of Total Therapy 3 for newly diagnosed multiple myeloma, metastatic bone survey, magnetic resonance imaging, and FDG-PET scanning were evaluated in 239 untreated patients. All 3 imaging techniques showed correlations with prognostically relevant baseline parameters: the number of focal lesions (FLs), especially when FDG-avid by PET-computed tomography, was positively linked to high levels of beta-2-micro

False positive in fluorodeoxyglucose-F18 positron emission tomography computed tomography scan of inferior vena cava leiomyoma in patient with a suspected paraganglioma.

Leiomyomas are benign tumors derived from smooth muscle tissue that rarely present outside the uterus. These tumors do not usually show FDG uptake. We present the case of a patient with hypertension refractory to treatment and a lesion arising from inferior vena cava, that shows intense FDG uptake in PET/CT scan, suggestive of paraganglioma, with a final histological diagnosis of leiomyoma.

The extent of perfusion-F18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography mismatch determines mortality in medically treated patients with chronic ischemic left ventricular dysfunction.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to assess the determinants of mortality in a large group of patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy who are treated medically and the impact of the extent of viable tissue on prognosis. BACKGROUND: Whether the presence of viability drives mortality in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy who are treated medically and whether the extent of viability is important are issues that are currently unclear. METHODS: Two hundred sixty-one patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy underwent positron emission tomography (PET) for assessment of viability. Prospective

Headache attributed to giant cell arteritis complicated with rheumatic polymyalgia diagnosed with F18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography and computed tomography: a case report.

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a kind of systemic vasculitis affecting individuals over 50 years old and is often the cause of new-onset headaches in older adults. Patients with GCA sometimes have rheumatic polymyalgia (PMR). The diagnosis of GCA generally depends on clinical manifestation, elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) or C-reactive protein, and positive imaging findings commonly obtained by ultrasound or temporal artery biopsy. In this study, we report a case of an 83-year-old woman with a new-onset headache and an elevated ESR. The result of the temporal artery ultrasound did

Maximum standardized uptake value-to-tumor size ratio in fluorodeoxyglucose F18 positron emission tomography/computed tomography: a simple prognostic parameter for non-small cell lung cancer.

PURPOSE: By correcting the effect of tumor size on metabolic activity, the maximum standardized uptake value-to-tumor size (SUVmax:tumor size) ratio on fluorodeoxyglucose F18 positron emission tomography (18F-FDG PET)/computed tomography (CT) scans can be a prognostic parameter of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The current study evaluates the prognostic value of SUVmax:tumor size ratio on pretreatment 18F-FDG PET/CT scans in patients with NSCLC. Furthermore, the SUVmax:tumor size ratio is compared with other established PET parameters. METHODS: This study included 108 patients with NSCLC

Factors associated with the development of new onset diffuse thyroid F18-fluorodeoxyglucose uptake after treatment of breast cancer in patients without a history of thyroid disease or thyroid dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Many studies have shown an association between thyroid disorders and breast cancer. Among them, diffusely increased thyroid uptake of F18-fluorodeoxyglucose (F-18 FDG) has been associated with chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis. There is little or no information regarding the relationship between treatment of breast cancer and the development of new diffuse thyroid F-18 FDG uptake. Here, we report the frequency of this occurrence and some of the factors associated with it. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of the positron emission tomography (PET) computed tomography (CT)
