Dental fluorosis in cattle.

Five expressions of dental fluorosis are described in cattle exposed to industrial fluoride pollution: 1. Hypercementosis with tooth ankylosis, cementum necrosis and cyst formation; 2. Delayed eruption of permanent incisor teeth; 3 Necrosis of alveolar bone with recession of bone and gingiva; 4. Oblique eruption of permanent teeth, hypoplasia of teeth with diastemata; and 5. Rapid progression of dental lesions. The five entities are not recognized in the "standard for the classification of dental fluorosis" by the National Academy of Sciences. Since this classification it too limited and super

Dental enamel, fluorosis and amoxicillin.

INTRODUCTION: Amoxicillin is one of the most used antibiotics among pediatric patients for the treatment of upper respiratory tract infections and specially for acute otitis media (AOM), a common diseases of infants and childhood. It has been speculated that the use of amoxicillin during early childhood could be associated with dental enamel fluorosis, also described in literature with the term Molar Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH), because they are generally situated in one or more 1st permanent molars and less frequently in the incisors. The effect ofAmoxicillin seems to be independent of o

Differential diagnosis of dental fluorosis.

Differentiating between fluorotic and non-fluorotic defects of dental enamel is an important diagnostic decision in epidemiology and public health dentistry. The commonly accepted diagnostic criteria for fluorosis discriminate between non-discrete symmetrical and asymmetrical distributions of opacities of dental enamel. These criteria appear to identify most cases of dental fluorosis. However, it is not yet confirmed that the pattern and distribution of dental fluorosis are a unique phenomenon. Metabolic, physiological, other trace elements, and malnutrition have been reported to induce bilate

Chronic fluoride toxicity: dental fluorosis.

Dental fluorosis occurs as a result of excess fluoride ingestion during tooth formation. Enamel fluorosis and primary dentin fluorosis can only occur when teeth are forming, and therefore fluoride exposure (as it relates to dental fluorosis) occurs during childhood. In the permanent dentition, this would begin with the lower incisors, which complete mineralization at approximately 2-3 years of age, and end after mineralization of the third molars. The white opaque appearance of fluorosed enamel is caused by a hypomineralized enamel subsurface. With more severe dental fluorosis, pitting and a l

Dental fluorosis: chemistry and biology.

This review aims at discussing the pathogenesis of enamel fluorosis in relation to a putative linkage among ameloblastic activities, secreted enamel matrix proteins and multiple proteases, growing enamel crystals, and fluid composition, including calcium and fluoride ions. Fluoride is the most important caries-preventive agent in dentistry. In the last two decades, increasing fluoride exposure in various forms and vehicles is most likely the explanation for an increase in the prevalence of mild-to-moderate forms of dental fluorosis in many communities, not the least in those in which controlle

Exposure to lead exacerbates dental fluorosis.

AIM: Our aim was to test the hypothesis that co-exposure to lead and fluoride alter the severity of enamel fluorosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Wistar rats were allocated in four groups: control, and 3 groups that received water containing 100 ppm of fluoride (F), 30 ppm of lead (Pb), or 100 ppm of F and 30 ppm of Pb (F+Pb) from the beginning of gestation. Enamel analysis and F and Pb determinations in enamel, dentine, and bone were performed in 81-day-old animals. Fluorosis was quantified using a new fluorosis index based on the identification of incisor enamel defects (white bands and white is

Dental fluorosis and periodontium: A game of shadows?

Dental fluorosis is a condition which is said to be present when the morphologic features of a tooth are altered clinically, in the form of discoloration or anatomic malformation which is attributed to the developmental changes induced by excess fluoride levels in plasma at the time of tooth formation. In India, an estimated 60 million people are at risk and 6 million people are disabled due to fluorosis. Lack of understanding into the effects of fluorosis on periodontium has left a blind spot in the vision of management of periodontitis in such patient groups. This article suggests the import

Characteristics attributed to individuals with dental fluorosis.

BACKGROUND: Previous investigations of the public perception of dental fluorosis have focused mainly on aesthetics. Other characteristics which could potentially be ascribed to fluorosis, such as perceived personality traits, have not been examined. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to identify personal characteristics (descriptors) attributed to people with fluorosis of varying degrees of severity, as depicted in standardised photographs viewed from different perspectives. METHOD: Extra-oral (full face) and intra-oral images of male and female subjects were digitally manipulated to represent nor

Prevalence of dental fluorosis in children in Singapore.

Prevalence and severity of dental fluorosis was assessed in 1739 Singaporean children aged 9, 12 and 16 yr in three different ethnic groups. All subjects had resided since birth in Singapore, which has a tropical climate. The water supply was fluoridated in 1957 at a level of 0.7 ppm. In this sample, mouth prevalence was 82.6%, tooth prevalence was 66.9%, the community fluorosis index was at 1.96; 9.2% of children had severe fluorosis and 26.2% had moderate fluorosis. There were no significant gender or racial differences. Prevalences were higher than those reported in most other studies. Due

The role of caffeinated beverages in dental fluorosis.

Recent studies have demonstrated that the incidence of dental fluorosis has increased during the past decade. Greater availability and use of fluoride-containing gels, mouth rinses, dentifrices, etc., improper prescribing of fluoride supplements and ingestion of fluoride dentifrice by some children are some of the suggested determinants of dental fluorosis. However, based on the increase in consumption of tea, coffee, and other caffeine-containing beverages by the children, and the augmentative effect of caffeine on fluoride bioavailability, we theorize that the rise in incidence of dental flu

Differential diagnosis of dental fluorosis made by undergraduate dental students.

OBJECTIVE: To check knowledge of undergraduate dental students to make diagnosis of dental fluorosis with varying degrees of severity and choose its appropriate treatment. METHODS: Data were collected using a semi-structured questionnaire addressing knowledge of undergraduates based on ten images of mouths presenting enamel changes. RESULTS: Only three images were correctly diagnosed by most undergraduates; the major difficulty was in establishing dental fluorosis severity degree. CONCLUSION: Despite much information about fluorosis conveyed during the Dentistry training, as defined in the

Skeletal and dental fluorosis: two case reports.

Two case reports from a high fluoride (10 ppm) rural community. They presented with severe degrees of dental fluorosis, hyper-sensitivity of teeth and skeletal fluorosis all arising from the ingestion of high amount of fluoride in water over a long period of time. Both cases had deformities of the upper and lower limbs. However, the deformities were more pronounced in the lower limbs than in the upper limbs, resulting in knock knee. Radiological finding showed osteosclerosis of the axial bones while the appendicular bones exhibited osteoporosis. There was marked change of bone structure observ

Salivary proteomic signatures in severe dental fluorosis.

The relationship between dental fluorosis and alterations in the salivary proteome remains inadequately elucidated. This study aimed to investigate the salivary proteome and fluoride concentrations in urine and drinking water among Thai individuals afflicted with severe dental fluorosis. Thirty-seven Thai schoolchildren, aged 6-16, were stratified based on Thylstrup and Fejerskov fluorosis index scores: 10 with scores ranging from 5 to 9 (SF) and 27 with a score of 0 (NF). Urinary and water fluoride levels were determined using an ion-selective fluoride electrode. Salivary proteomic profiling

Environmental and physiological factors affecting dental fluorosis.

In addition to differences in fluoride intake and possibly to calcium deficiency or malnutrition, there are several factors which may account for individual differences in the occurrence of dental fluorosis. Disorders in acid-base balance affect the renal handling of fluoride such that, in acidosis, the excretion rate is diminished and, in alkalosis, the excretion rate is enhanced. Thus, any factor that can decrease urinary pH would be expected to increase the likelihood of dental fluorosis and vice versa. Results from studies with both rats and dogs have shown that acid-base disturbances per

Bovine dental fluorosis: histologic and physical characteristics.

Incisor teeth from 5- to 6-year-old Holstein-Friesian cattle maintained on a ration averaging 40 ppm F annually from 4 months of age were analyzed by a variety of histologic techniques. These techniques included photomicroscopy, microradiography, protein staining, and microhardness testing. The features of fluorotic enamel that were noted were: hypomineralized outer enamel, coronal cementum hyperplasia, disrupted subsurface pigment band, hypoplastic pits, puckered incremental lines, periodic radiolucent regions, positive protein staining, and decreased microhardness of the outer enamel. These
