Focal Nodular Hyperplasia and Focal Nodular Hyperplasia-like Lesions.

Focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) is a benign lesion occurring in a background of normal liver. FNH is seen most commonly in young women and can often be accurately diagnosed at imaging, including CT, MRI, or contrast-enhanced US. In the normal liver, FNH frequently must be differentiated from hepatocellular adenoma, which although benign, is managed differently because of the risks of hemorrhage and malignant transformation. When lesions that are histologically identical to FNH occur in a background of abnormal liver, they are termed FNH-like lesions. These lesions can be a source of diagnostic

[Focal nodular hyperplasia].

Thanks to ultrasonography, computed tomography, and nuclear magnetic resonance, not only symptomatic but also asymptomatic liver tumours are discovered more frequently than before. Focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) is one such tumour, most frequently an asymptomatic tumour of the liver, which predominantly appears in women during the generative period, who have taken oral contraceptives for several years. We present a 27-year-old woman, who has never taken either oral contraceptives or other hormones, in whom a left lobe liver tumour was unexpectedly discovered during a routine investigation per

Multiple focal nodular hyperplasia.

Focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) is a benign lesion of the liver which usually presents with one or two localizations. We report a patient with history of resection of a biliary cyst, and who had been taking oral contraceptives for the past 18 years, who had multiple localizations of FNH (more than 30 lesions). The largest lesion measured 10.5 x 11 x 12cm. The imaging characteristics of our patient were atypical. A central scar could be demonstrated only in the largest lesion, in an eccentric location. In the other lesions, no scar formations could be detected. Furthermore, imaging characterist

[Focal nodular hyperplasia of the liver].

Focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) of the liver is an uncommon benign lesion that usually occurs in young or middle-aged women. Although it has been associated with oral contraceptive use, no evidence supports this hypothesis. Most patients with this lesion are asymptomatic. We report the case of a 10-year-old boy with a history of transient epigastric abdominal pain over several days. Physical examination revealed a tender mass in the upper left quadrant. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed an 85 3 45 mm mass located in the left lobe of the liver. Computed tomography-guided biopsy showed histolog

Focal nodular hyperplasia of the liver.

The management of focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) of the liver requires a systematic approach. After a histologic diagnosis of FNH is obtained, asymptomatic lesions can be observed safely with regular follow-up and treated if they become symptomatic or enlargement occurs. In the case presented here, we have elected follow-up with serial CT scans because our patient is asymptomatic and the lesion has not significantly enlarged. Patients who have symptomatic lesions while taking an oral contraceptive can have conservative follow-up when they stop taking the oral contraceptive, because regression

Focal nodular hyperplasia of the liver.

Twenty-four patients underwent biopsy or resection of the liver for focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center from 1978 to 1988. Twenty-two of the patients were women. The mean age was 35 years. A history of antecedent oral contraceptive or conjugated estrogen (Premarin) use was obtained in 18 of 21 women. There were two men, aged 26 and 37 years; neither gave a history of hormone use. Most of the tumors were solitary (22 of 24) and located in the left lobe of the liver (17 of 22). Fifteen of the patients had a prior or simultaneous malignant lesion and six had

Focal nodular hyperplasia of the liver.

Focal nodular hyperplasia of the liver (FNH) in a fit young Iranian girl of 19 months presented with asymptomatic hepatomegaly. Liver scan and ultrasound examinations demonstrated a space-occupying lesion involving both hepatic lobes. Arteriography revealed a vascular pattern suggestive of liver cell carcinoma with dilated arterial branches and tumour blush on the capillary phase. At laparotomy the large mass involved both right and left hepatic lobes and was not resected. Tissue diagnosis was established by surgical wedge biopsy. FNH should be considered in the differential diagnosis of an he

[Focal nodular hyperplasia of the liver].

Among the benign liver tumours particularly the focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) increased its importance. Within 10 years we could observe 28 patients with the lesion. Macroscopically the nodular changes show extremely characteristic findings. The histological picture reminds us of cirrhosis, the prevailing presence in women and the clinical recognition mostly at reproductive age let us think of a hormonal action in development and growth of the lesion. The same concerns the use of hormonal contraceptive drugs. Differential-diagnostically particularly malignant processes are to be demarcated.

[Focal nodular hyperplasia of the liver].

Report about 19 cases of focal nodular hyperplasia of the liver observed from 1971 to June 1981. The autopsy cases are 7 women between 19 and 62 years of age. The intake of oral contraceptives over a long time period was known in 4 cases; once a node was detected in a 19-year-old woman after a normal pregnancy (death from amniotic fluid embolism), once in a 62-year-old woman who had a longterm diabetes, and once in a 47-year-old woman who died from acute alcoholic intoxication; probably contraceptives had not been taken. The biopsy cases are 11 women between 27 and 50 years of age and a man 25

Focal nodular hyperplasia or focal nodular hyperplasia-like lesions of the liver: a special emphasis on diagnosis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) and FNH-like lesions are hypervascular masses that can mimic hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). We have investigated the clinical, radiological and pathological features of FNH and FNH-like lesions of the liver, with particular focus on the aspect of diagnosis. METHODS: A total of 84 patients, 77 with pathologically-proven FNH and seven with FNH-like lesions of the liver, were analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS: Of the 84 patients, seven had underlying liver cirrhosis, including two with Budd-Chiari syndrome and one with cardiac cirrhosis. Thes

Hepatic adenoma and focal nodular hyperplasia.

Hepatic adenoma and focal nodular hyperplasia are benign lesions of the liver. The incidence of these conditions has been increasing since 1970. Hepatic adenoma primarily affects young women of childbearing age who have a long history of using oral contraceptives, while focal nodular hyperplasia has a wider age distribution and is not associated with the use of oral contraceptives. The most extensive complication of hepatic adenoma is intratumoral or intraperitoneal hemorrhage, which occurs in 50 to 60 per cent of patients. Patients with focal nodular hyperplasia are usually asymptomatic and r

[Hormonal contraception and focal nodular hyperplasia].

Hormonal contraceptives of the first generation don't have any causal influence on preexistent focal nodular liver hyperplasias, but stimulate their growth. Precondition for tumourus progression of these benign liver neoplasias is a long time pill intake. The pathogenetic mechanism for the growth of liver liver all adenomas is sure if there was a longer application of contraceptive pills containing mestranol. Characteristics of these rare tumours (incidence 3 to 4 per 100,000) are a high female prevalence of 90 to 100 per cent and a regression of little neoplasias after stopping the contracept

Oestrogen hormone receptors in focal nodular hyperplasia.

BACKGROUND: The role of hormones in focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) has been investigated with conflicting results. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate oestrogen and progesterone receptor immunohistochemical expression in FNH and surrounding normal liver (control material). METHODS: Biopsy materials from FNH and control tissue were investigated using an immunostainer. Receptor expression was graded as the proportion score (percentage of nuclear staining) and oestrogen receptor intensity score. RESULTS: Study material included tissue from 11 resected FNH lesions and two core bio

Focal nodular hyperplasia after orthotopic liver transplantation.

Focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) has been well characterized in native livers, but to our knowledge, no cases of FNH have been described in liver allografts. We review the clinicopathological features of 6 FNHs identified in 4 patients after orthotopic liver transplantation. There were 3 male patients and 1 female patient ranging in age from 2 to 63 years. The time from transplant to a diagnosis of FNH ranged from 15 to 118 months. Two patients presented with an incidental solitary liver nodule. One patient presented with 2 liver nodules, and the other patient initially presented with 1 liver n

Focal nodular hyperplasia inducing hepatic vein obstruction.

OBJECTIVE: The records of 10 patients with focal nodular hyperplasia inducing intrahepatic vein obstruction were reviewed. The purpose of this study was to describe and emphasize the imaging features of these findings. CONCLUSION: Focal nodular hyperplasia may be responsible for hepatic vein obstruction with hepatic vein collaterals. The relatively large size and central location of the lesions seem to play important roles in the obstruction of the hepatic veins.

Focal nodular hyperplasia presenting as acute abdomen.

Focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) is a benign liver tumour with an asymptomatic course, rarely causing complications. When the diagnosis is certain, only watchful observation is necessary. We highlight an interesting case of a 42-year-old woman with a FNH that ruptured and became haemorrhagic, thus presenting as an acute surgical abdomen. The diagnosis was only established after surgical resection with histopathological confirmation. Although haemorrhage of hepatic FNH is extremely rare, this case highlights the small risk of rupture in large lesions.

Familial glioblastoma with hepatic focal nodular hyperplasia.

Two siblings succumbed to glioblastoma multiforme, associated with hepatic focal nodular hyperplasia and cafe-au-lait spots. One sibling had syndactyly and multiple colonic polyps, while the other had an angiomatous malformation in the brain. Their mother died of myasthenia gravis. The findings suggest a hamartomatous syndrome of malformations that predisposes to brain tumors.
