Immune-mediated food allergy and non-immune mediated food intolerance are categorized as the most common adverse reactions resulting from the ingestion of certain foods. As there is no standard treatment, the possible remedy to avoid exposure to these adverse reactions is adhering to a strict diet that eliminates allergic and intolerant foods. The commonly consumed foods including dairy products, egg, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanut, soybean, and wheat-based products are proven to cause food allergy. Foods containing lactose, gluten, high FODMAPs, biogenic amines, and certain food additives

Individual differences in human food neophobia (the reluctance to try novel foods) and food neophilia (the overt willingness to try novel foods) influence the evaluation of tastes and odors, as well as the sampling of such stimuli. Past research also notes an association of food neophobia to PTC sensitivity, body weight, and cephalic phase salivary response. The present study assessed physiological reactions of food neophobics and neophilics to pictures of food and non-food stimuli. Stimuli pictures were presented in random order on a computer screen for a period of 5 min. No significant diffe

Adverse food reactions can be classified into two main categories depending on wether an immune mechanism is involved or not. The first category includes immune mediated reactions like IgE mediated food allergy, eosinophilic oesophagitis, food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome and celiac disease. The second category implies non-immune mediated adverse food reactions, also called food intolerances. Intoxications, pharmacologic reactions, metabolic reactions, physiologic, psychologic or reactions with an unknown mechanism belong to this category. We present a classification of adverse food

Adverse reactions to foods, aside from those considered toxic, are caused by a particular individual intolerance towards commonly tolerated foods. Intolerance derived from an immunological mechanism is referred to as Food Allergy, the non-immunological form is called Food Intolerance. IgE-mediated food allergy is the most common and dangerous type of adverse food reaction. It is initiated by an impairment of normal Oral Tolerance to food in predisposed individuals (atopic). Food allergy produces respiratory, gastrointestinal, cutaneous and cardiovascular symptoms but often generalized, life-th

Confirmed adverse reactions to foods may be caused by toxic, enzymatic, pharmacological, "pseudoallergic" or allergic mechanisms. True food allergies are mostly IgE-mediated and directed against one or only a few food proteins. They appear typically as eczema and gastrointestinal symptoms (vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal cramps) among infants and as oral allergy syndrome, urticaria/angioedema, rhinoconjunctivitis or anaphylaxis among adults. The majority of food allergies among adults is caused by cross-reactivity of IgE against inhalative allergens also reacting with food proteins. This must b

Adverse reactions to foods and food additives include those that involve an immune mechanism of reaction (food allergies) and those that are non-immunological in nature (food intolerance). The signs and symptoms of food allergy usually involve the skin and gastrointestinal tract and are "classic" allergic symptoms. Food intolerance occurs more frequently at all ages. A number of food additives have been implicated in food intolerance, as none involve an immune mechanism of reaction. The role of food additives in food intolerance is not well established in many cases, has been discounted in oth

Food sensitivity is only one of several types of food-related reactions. Symptoms are not pathognomonic; hence, a broad differential diagnosis is often considered. Unless the anticipated reaction is systemic anaphylaxis, the role of any food suspected (by history, skin testing, and/or radioallergosorbent test) of causing the patient's symptoms should be verified by elimination-challenge testing. Dietary elimination is the most effective treatment, but its success depends on several factors.

Some people experience individual adverse reactions to foods that most other people can eat with no ill effects. These food sensitivities include true food allergy, involving the body's immune system, and various types of nonallergic food sensitivities.

The concept of the "cannabidiol (CBD) Hazard Triangle" reflects the unique position of CBD at the intersection of three overlapping dimensions: CBD as a substance associated with medicinal and pharmacological effects ("Drug"); CBD as a food ingredient subject to the EU Novel Food regulatory framework ("Novel Food"); and CBD as a potential source of food safety concerns ("Hazard"). This study investigates the growing presence of CBD-containing food products, their associated regulatory challenges, safety concerns, and market dynamics through an analysis of notifications reported in the EU Rapid

As the prevalence of immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated food allergy continues to increase without an imminent cure, prevention has become an urgent need. A breakthrough study that shows that early consumption of peanut can prevent the development of peanut allergy has led for a push in early interventions. Theories associated with the increasing prevalence of food allergy lend themselves to areas of potential intervention, e.g., age at time of food introduction, infant feeding practices, microbiome influences, diet composition, vitamin D deficiency, and increasing rates of eczema. UNLABELLED: Introduction Limited food supply paired with reduced access to food during emergency disasters can lead to malnutrition. To date, research evaluating the adequacy of household emergency food supplies relies on self-reported data from surveys and has not been measured objectively in households in the United States. The main objective of this study was to describe household calorie availability and nutrient density in a normal situation and to project changes that could occur when emergencies (eg, natural disasters) restrict replenishment of food supplies and disrupt water and/or ene

Food intolerance is a reproducible adverse reaction to a specific food ingredient that is not psychologically based. Food allergy is a form of food intolerance in which there is evidence that the response is caused by an immunological reaction to food. Other mechanisms of food intolerance include enzyme defects (e.g. lactase deficiency), pharmacological effects (e.g. histamine), toxic properties (e.g. haemagglutinating lectins) and irritants (e.g. spices). Food allergy in children is a highly contentious subject and there is often a striking lack of published evidence from which to base clinic

Microbial pathogens may be transmitted to humans via food animals and food animal products. A quick reference table is presented to provide easy access to food safety information related to the major food animal product areas. Included in the table are the pathogens, mode of transmission, public health impact, and control and prevention strategies for poultry, beef, dairy products, and pork.

One hundred and sixty one food handlers in two hospital settings were evaluated for their knowledge and practice of certain aspects of food hygiene. They were also screened for nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus as well as for enteric pathogens and parasites. Positive responses to selected food hygiene behaviours such as handwashing before handling food and daily change of clothes were very high and encouraging. However, only a very small proportion (28.6%) were observed to have actually washed their hands especially between handling cooked and uncooked foods. The nasal carriage of Staphy

Salmonellosis is the second most reported gastrointestinal disorder in the EU resulting from the consumption of Salmonella-contaminated foods. Symptoms include gastroenteritis, abdominal cramps, bloody diarrhoea, fever, myalgia, headache, nausea and vomiting. In 2018, Salmonella accounted for more than half of the numbers of foodborne outbreak illnesses reported in the EU. Salmonella contamination is mostly associated with produce such as poultry, cattle and their feeds but other products such as dried foods, infant formula, fruit and vegetable products and pets have become important. Efforts

Hypercholesterolemia is a predominant risk factor for atherosclerosis and associated coronary and cerebrovascular diseases. Control of cholesterol levels through therapeutic drugs, notably statins, have significantly reduced the risk for developing atherosclerosis and associated cardiovascular diseases. However, adverse effects associated with therapeutic drugs warrant to find other alternative approaches for managing hypercholesterolemia, especially for those with borderline cholesterol levels. Food supplements have increasingly become attractive alternatives to prevent or treat hypercholeste

The term "food allergy" is widely misused for all sorts of symptoms and diseases caused by food. Food allergy (FA) is an adverse reaction to food (food hypersensitivity) occurring in susceptible individuals, which is mediated by a classical immune mechanism specific for the food itself. The best established mechanism in FA is due to the presence of IgE antibodies against the offending food. Food intolerance (FI) are all non-immune-mediated adverse reactions to food. The subgroups of FI are enzymatic (e.g. lactose intolerance due to lactase deficiency), pharmacological (reactions against biogen
