Microplastics in the Food Chain: Food Safety and Environmental Aspects.

Plastic has been an incredibly useful and indispensable material in all aspects of human life. Without it many advances in medicine, technology or industry would not have been possible. However, its easy accessibility and low cost have led to global misuse. Basically, the production of the plastics from different chemical agents is very easy but unfortunately difficult to reuse or recycle, and it is thrown away as litter, incinerated or disposed of in landfill. Plastic once in the environment begins to degrade to very small sizes. Thus, many animals mistake them for food, so plastic enters a m

[Spread of viruses through the food chain].

Food associated viruses are responsible for a high number of infectious diseases in man, mainly gastroenteritis and hepatitis. The three most important viral agents are noroviruses (NV) (formerly known as Norwalk-like viruses), Rotavirus (RV) and Hepatitis A-Virus (HAV). The numbers of infections in man were in 2002 according to the Robert Koch-Institut for NV and RV 50,000, respectively, and for HAV 1,500, slightly decreasing in 2003. The rate of foodborne infections caused by viruses can only be estimated (appr. 20% of total cases). On the other hand only a very small part of viral gastroent

Dieldrin pollution of a human food chain.

1 An incident is described in which excessive mortality amongst a poultry flock alerted veterinarians. Investigation revealed dieldrin in the carcasses and in the wood litter used in the nesting boxes. 2 Because high levels of dieldrin were found also in eggs the Department of Community Medicine was alerted. 3 Those most at risk were the workers who could have absorbed dieldrin by inhalation and percutaneously, and by eating contaminated eggs. A number of other people were at risk having eaten contaminated eggs. 4 Twenty-one workers or members of their families were investigated by case histor

Endocrine modulators in the food chain and environment.

Recently, considerable attention has been focused on certain environmental contaminants--"endocrine disruptors"--of industrial origin that may mimic the action of sex hormones. Natural compounds and their effects on other types of hormonal activity (eg, on adrenal or thyroid function) have for some reason not provoked similar attention. As exemplified by tributyltin and certain bioaccumulating chlorinated compounds, available evidence indicates that "endocrine disruption" caused by xenobiotics is primarily an ecotoxicologic problem. In mammals, certain phenylmethyl-substituted siloxanes have b

Occurrence and sequestration of toxins in food chains.

Animals may acquire toxicity by absorbing toxic compounds from their food, e.g. from plants or other animals. Sequestration and accumulation of toxins may provide protection from predators, which learn to avoid this prey because of unpleasant experiences such as bitter taste. This is a common phenomenon in marine as well as in terrestrial ecosystems. Moreover, toxins may enter food chains where they accumulate reaching high, often lethal concentrations. Palytoxin which had been primarily detected in marine zoanthids (Palythoa sp.), occurs also in a wide range of other animals, e.g. in sponges,

Antimicrobial Resistance in the Food Chain in the European Union.

Consumers require safety foods but without losing enough supply and low prices. Food concerns about antimicrobial residues and antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) bacteria are not usually appropriately separated and could be perceived as the same problem. The monitoring of residues of antimicrobials in animal food is well established at different levels (farm, slaughterhouse, and industry), and it is preceded by the legislation of veterinary medicines where maximum residues limits are required for medicines to be used in food animal. Following the strategy of the World Health Organization, one of th

Mercury in the food chain of the Lagoon of Venice, Italy.

Sediments and biota samples were collected in a restricted area of the Lagoon of Venice and analysed for total mercury, monomethyl mercury (MMHg), and nitrogen and carbon isotopes. Results were used to examine mercury biomagnification in a complex food chain. Sedimentary organic matter (SOM) proved to be a major source of nutrients and mercury to primary consumers. Contrary to inorganic mercury, MMHg was strongly biomagnified along the food chain, although the lognormal relationship between MMHg and δ(15)N was less constrained than generally reported from lakes or coastal marine ecosystems. Modeling nutrient flows in the food chain of China.

Increasing nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) inputs have greatly contributed to the increasing food production in China during the last decades, but have also increased N and P losses to the environment. The pathways and magnitude of these losses are not well quantified. Here, we report on N and P use efficiencies and losses at a national scale in 2005, using the model NUFER (NUtrient flows in Food chains, Environment and Resources use). Total amount of "new" N imported to the food chain was 48.8 Tg in 2005. Only 4.4.Tg reached households as food. Average N use efficiencies in crop production, a

Aluminum of acid soils in the food chain and senility.

Aluminum is liberated from aluminosilicates of soil clays and protracted Al intake by humans in food and medications has been shown to be a potential hazard to human health. Encephalopathology, senility, and lower statistical longevity were found to be geographically and geochemically linked to acid soil conditions. We examined the interrelation of soil environmental supply of Al3+(6H2O) to the food-plant-animal-human chain (e.g., in tea leaves, approximately 1000 mg L-1) and to identified health hazards. Because F forms a strong ligand with Al, we also analyzed the extent that F accumulation

Salmonella assessment along the Spanish food chain: Likelihood of Salmonella occurrence in poultry and pig products is maintained across the food chain stages.

Salmonellosis is one of the most important foodborne diseases worldwide, including the European Union. Despite the One Health approach measures for risk assessment and risk management implemented by the European Union, the occurrence of disease and disease outbreaks remains high (e.g. 694 outbreaks were reported in 2020), highlighting the need of new assessment methods. Herein we applied machine learning using the random forests method to evaluate and identify key points regarding the occurrence of Salmonella sp. along the Spanish food chain during 2015-2020, using data provided by the Spanish

Foodborne Parasites and Their Complex Life Cycles Challenging Food Safety in Different Food Chains.

Zoonotic foodborne parasites often represent complex, multi host life cycles with parasite stages in the hosts, but also in the environment. This manuscript aims to provide an overview of important zoonotic foodborne parasites, with a focus on the different food chains in which parasite stages may occur. We have chosen some examples of meat-borne parasites occurring in livestock (Taenia spp., Trichinella spp. and Toxoplasma gondii), as well as Fasciola spp., an example of a zoonotic parasite of livestock, but transmitted to humans via contaminated vegetables or water, covering the 'farm to for

Nanotechnology and E-Sensing for Food Chain Quality and Safety.

Nowadays, it is well known that sensors have an enormous impact on our life, using streams of data to make life-changing decisions. Every single aspect of our day is monitored via thousands of sensors, and the benefits we can obtain are enormous. With the increasing demand for food quality, food safety has become one of the main focuses of our society. However, fresh foods are subject to spoilage due to the action of microorganisms, enzymes, and oxidation during storage. Nanotechnology can be applied in the food industry to support packaged products and extend their shelf life. Chemical compos

Mapping food surveillance chains through different sectors.

European countries are investing in strengthening disease surveillance from a One Health (OH) perspective. During the MATRIX project, in the context of the One Health European Joint Programme, existing surveillance chains across the sectors of animal health, food safety, and public health have been investigated through questionnaires. Provided information has then been selected to be displayed in a single slide using an implemented mapping template. Two real-life scenarios are presented as case studies: the surveillance activities in place in France for Salmonella in the pork meat food chain,

Resistance in bacteria of the food chain: epidemiology and control strategies.

Bacteria have evolved multiple mechanisms for the efficient evolution and spread of antimicrobial resistance. Modern food production facilitates the emergence and spread of resistance through the intensive use of antimicrobial agents and international trade of both animals and food products. The main route of transmission between food animals and humans is via food products, although other modes of transmission, such as direct contact and through the environment, also occur. Resistance can spread as resistant pathogens or via transferable genes in different commensal bacteria, making quantific

Pseudoendogenous origin of prednisolone in pigs from the food chain.

The debate about the origin of prednisolone in animal organisms has lasted for 5 years. Bovine species have been the most studied, but studies on humans and horses are also present in the literature. Even if prednisolone in pigs does not yet represent a problem for control agencies, interest has recently increased with regard to this species. To date, there has been just a single study in the literature about this topic, performed on 10 sows treated with prednisolone or a synthetic analogue of adrenocorticotropic hormone. We therefore initiated a study on 80 pigs, a number considered represent

[Leptospirosis: occupational risk in the chain of food of animal origin].

Leptospirosis is a worldwide zoonotic infection. The source of infection in humans is usually either direct or indirect contact with the urine of infected animals. Occupation is a significant risk factor for humans. Direct contact with infected animals accounts for most infections in farmers, veterinarians, abattoir workers, meat inspectors. The highest risk is associated with swine farming, slaughterhouse and meat industry workers. Most cases are diagnosed by serology. Leptospirosis may be prevented trought appropriate hygiene, sanitization, animal husbandry. It is essential to educate people
