Connecting People to Food: A Network Approach to Alleviating Food Deserts.

INTRODUCTION: In 2020, 13.8 million people in the United States struggled with food security. This means they were uncertain whether their food needs would be met. Where someone lives can influence struggles with food security. Food deserts are census tracts that experience high rates of poverty (20 percent of residents at/below poverty thresholds) and low access to grocery stores with nutritious foods. Food deserts and insecurity disproportionately affect disadvantaged communities and may contribute to health issues like diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity. Public policies can be utili

Spatiotemporal trends in food deserts, food swamps and food environments around schools in Wallonia, Belgium (2008-2024).

BACKGROUND: Food environments influence dietary behaviors and nutritional health outcomes. Food deserts, areas characterized by limited spatial access to healthy foods, and food swamps, areas where unhealthy outlets predominate, present challenges to the adoption and maintenance of a healthy diet. This study analyzed trends in access to healthy and unhealthy food environments in neighborhoods and around schools in Wallonia, Belgium, over the period 2008-2024. The region remains understudied and offers a particularly insightful case due to its mix of urban and rural areas. METHODS: We combined

An Examination of Failed Grocery Store Interventions in Former Food Deserts.

Background. Implementing food stores in deprived neighborhoods to improve access to healthy food is a debated topic. Aims. To uncover important contributors to the closure of grocery store interventions in urban food deserts. Method. We systematically reviewed both peer-reviewed and gray literature for publications on the failure of grocery store interventions. Results. We found nine articles on six different failed food stores. The reasons stated for closure included low sales, a lack of food retail experience, poor marketing, and difficulty in attracting and retaining a high volume of consum

Evaluating the Effects of Food Deserts and Food Swamps in an Urban Burn Patient Population.

Poverty is a known risk factor for burn injury and is associated with residency in food deserts and food swamps. Our aim was to determine the prevalence of residency in food deserts and food swamps and to investigate the relationship between food environment, comorbidities, and wound healing in patients with burns. We performed a retrospective chart review of all patients with burns aged ≥ 18 seen in the emergency department or admitted to the burn service at an American Burn Association-verified urban academic center between January 2016 and January 2022. Patient GeoIDs were used to classify

Food desert residence and prenatal diet quality.

INTRODUCTION: Suboptimal prenatal nutrition is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes, yet the contribution of the lived food environment on prenatal diet quality remains incompletely understood. This study evaluated differences in prenatal macro- and micronutrient intake, glycemic and lipid intake patterns, and dietary quality indices among pregnant individuals living in food desert (FD) versus non-FD areas. METHODS: This secondary analysis utilized data from an urban maternal-child cohort enrolled between 2014 and 2024. Eligible participants were aged 18-40 years, had a singleton pregna

Influence of Food Desert Residence on Breastfeeding Initiation.

Introduction: Breastfeeding is associated with improved health outcomes. Several social drivers of health impact breastfeeding initiation (BFI). Prior research using ecological data demonstrated that food desert residence (FDR) is associated with lower rates of BFI. The primary objective was to assess the relationship between FDR and BFI using individual-level data. The secondary objective was to assess the relationship between FDR and BFI at the county level. Methods: Individual-level birth data from the Florida Department of Health were linked to food access data from the United States Depar

Food Swamps and Food Deserts Impact on Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease Mortality in US Counties.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Lacking access to quality food may increase the risk of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). We investigated associations between food environment factors (food deserts and food swamps) and MASLD-related mortality across the United States. METHODS: MASLD-related deaths were obtained from the National Vital Statistics System (2016-2020) and food environment factors from Food Environment Atlas. Food deserts are areas where low-income residents have limited access to affordable and nutritious food due to a scarcity of nearby grocery stores. Food

Food deserts and food insecurity in Indian medical colleges: a mixed-methods study protocol exploring myths and realities.

INTRODUCTION: Lack of consistent access to sufficient, nutritious food is a pressing issue globally. Resilient food systems amalgamating multiple sectors like agriculture, animal husbandry, healthcare and education are essential to resolve food insecurity. College students, particularly in medical colleges, are vulnerable to food insecurity due to limited access to healthy food, lack of resources (time, money and knowledge), resulting in unhealthy eating habits. This study aims to investigate the presence of food deserts within medical colleges in Kerala, analyse factors influencing student fo

An Exploration of Food Deserts and Acute Biliary Disease in Emergency General Surgery Patients.

INTRODUCTION: Living in a food desert may increase the risk of health conditions related to biliary disease, such as obesity. However, there is limited understanding of food deserts' relationship with biliary disease. In this retrospective study, we explored food deserts in our region and examined the relationship between food deserts and biliary severity and outcomes using food census tracts. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of 1609 patients presenting to our urban safety-net hospital that underwent cholecystectomy for acute cholecystitis, acute biliary pancreatitis, and choledoc

Cutaneous Manifestations of Nutritional Deficiencies in the Context of Food Deserts of United States.

Food deserts exist due to a multitude of factors ranging from socioeconomic status, racial disparities, geography, cost, and healthful food access. Given the vast biological function of vitamins and minerals, the clinical presentation for nutritional deficiencies ranges from benign to life-threatening. Often, the first indicators of underlying nutritional deficiencies are cutaneous manifestations. The first patient case is a 36-year-old female at 25 weeks gestation with a pruritic and painful rash that began in the genital region and spread centrifugally to her legs. The second patient case is

Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis, Food Deserts, Poverty, and Urban/Rural Residence: Is There a Link?

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity is increased in food deserts, a community with little to no access to healthy food. As obesity is associated with slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE), it was the purpose of this study to analyze the prevalence of SCFE patients by food desert location and its interaction with rural/urban location. METHODS: A retrospective review of all consecutive patients with idiopathic SCFE treated at our institution over 11 years was performed. From the patient's address, the US Census Bureau tract in which the patient resided was determined. Using the census tract code,

The association of food deserts with readmission and re-operation following long-segment lumbar fusion.

BACKGROUND: Nutrition is increasingly recognized as a key determinant of postoperative recovery in spine surgery. An estimated 17% of U.S. adults reside in a food desert, reflecting a substantial population at risk for poor nutritional status. However, the role of residence in food deserts with spinal fusion outcomes remains unknown. OBJECTIVES: We sought to investigate the association between living in a food desert and rates of reoperation and postoperative complications after long-segment lumbar fusion. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all adult patients at a single institution from 2

The Changing Landscape of Food Deserts and Swamps over More than a Decade in Flanders, Belgium.

Food deserts and swamps have previously been mostly studied in Anglo-Saxon countries such as the USA and Great Britain. This research is one of the first studies to map food deserts and swamps in a mainland European, densely populated but heavily fragmented region such as Flanders. The evolution of food deserts and swamps between 2008 and 2020 was assessed. Special focus was given to areas where high numbers of elderly, young people and/or families with low income live. Food deserts were calculated based on supermarket access within 1000 m and bus stop availability, while food swamps were calc

How to identify food deserts: measuring physical and economic access to supermarkets in King County, Washington.

OBJECTIVES: We explored new ways to identify food deserts. METHODS: We estimated physical and economic access to supermarkets for 5 low-income groups in Seattle-King County, Washington. We used geographic information system data to measure physical access: service areas around each supermarket were delineated by ability to walk, bicycle, ride transit, or drive within 10 minutes. We assessed economic access by stratifying supermarkets into low, medium, and high cost. Combining income and access criteria generated multiple ways to estimate food deserts. RESULTS: The 5 low-income group definiti

Impact of Living in a Food Desert on Complications After Fracture Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Food deserts-communities with limited access to healthy food-have been linked with poor surgical outcomes; however, their impact on orthopaedic trauma outcomes remains unknown. The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of food desert residency among orthopaedic trauma patients and to investigate the impact of food desert residency on the rate of unplanned reoperation with use of a large, high-quality, prospectively collected dataset with adjudicated outcomes. We hypothesized that orthopaedic trauma patients would reside in food deserts at a higher rate than the genera

Association of Food Desert Residency and Preterm Birth in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: Food deserts are a major public health concern. Inadequate access to healthy food has been associated with poor nutrition and the development of dietary related chronic conditions. OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between geographic access to nutritious food and preterm birth and whether gestational hypertension mediates this relationship. METHODS: Food access data was retrieved from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Access Research Atlas (2019) and used to quantify the percentage of Census tracts within each county that were food deserts: low-income tracts with li

A linear tessellation model for the identification of "food desert": A case study of Shanghai, China.

The "food desert" problem has been treated under a national strategy in the United States and other countries. At present, there is little research on the phenomenon of "food desert" in China. This study takes Shanghai as the research area and proposes a multiscale analysis method using a linear tessellation model that splits the street network into homogeneous linear units. Firstly, the network kernel density estimation using a linear tessellation model is used to measure the travel-mode-based food accessibility. Considering the actual travel constraints, the GPS trajectory data of four trave
