Neural responsivity to food cues varies with food fussiness in adolescents.

Food fussiness (picky eating) increases risk for poor nutrition and eating disorders but its biological underpinnings are not understood. We aimed to investigate behavioral (observed as well as parent- and self-reported), and neural (using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI)) correlates of food fussiness. Adolescents completed an fMRI task during which they viewed photos of fruits and vegetables [F&V], high energy-density [High-ED] foods, and Non-foods. Following scanning, they completed a multi-item ad libitum meal [ALM], then an Eating in the Absence of Hunger [EAH] test. Parents co

Food neophobia and 'picky/fussy' eating in children: a review.

Two factors have been shown to contribute to rejection or acceptance of fruits and vegetables: food neophobia and 'picky/fussy' eating. Food neophobia is generally regarded as the reluctance to eat, or the avoidance of, new foods. In contrast, 'picky/fussy' eaters are usually defined as children who consume an inadequate variety of foods through rejection of a substantial amount of foods that are familiar (as well as unfamiliar) to them. Through understanding the variables which influence the development or expression of these factors (including age, personality, gender, social influences and

The relationship between sensory sensitivity, food fussiness and food preferences in children with neurodevelopmental disorders.

Heightened sensitivity to sensory information has been associated with food fussiness in both atypical and typical development. Despite food fussiness and sensory dysfunction being reported as common concerns for children with neurodevelopmental disorders, the relationship that exists between them, and whether they differ between disorders, has yet to be established. The current study aimed to examine sensory sensitivity as a predictor of food fussiness in three different neurodevelopmental disorders, whilst controlling for comorbidity amongst these disorders. Ninety-eight caregivers of childr

Longitudinal associations between food fussiness and parental feeding behaviors in Chinese children: between- and within-person effects.

BACKGROUND: The directionality of longitudinal associations between children's food fussiness and parental feeding behaviors remains contested. This study aimed to assess the dynamic relationship between children's food fussiness and feeding behaviors. METHODS: To disentangle these effects, this study employed cross-lagged panel models (CLPMs) and random-intercept cross-lagged panel models (RI-CLPMs) using longitudinal data from 588 Chinese children (Mean age = 3.7 years, SD = 0.3, 51.7% boys) across three waves over two years. CLPMs capture between-person associations, while RI-CLPMs isolate

Poor infant inhibitory control predicts food fussiness in childhood - A possible protective role of n-3 PUFAs for vulnerable children.

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) children are more impulsive towards a sweet reward and have altered feeding behavior in adulthood. We hypothesized that early life inhibitory control predicts feeding behaviors later on in childhood, and the consumption of n-3 PUFAs during infancy may protect IUGR children from developing problematic feeding behaviors. 156 children had information on the Early Childhood Behavior Questionnaire (ECBQ) at 18 months, Food Frequency Questionnaire at 48 months and Children׳s Eating Behavior Questionnaire (CEBQ) at 72 months. There was a significant negative cor

Eating behaviors, dietary patterns and weight status in emerging adulthood and longitudinal associations with eating behaviors in early childhood.

BACKGROUND: Eating behaviors may contribute to differences in body weight and diet over time. Our study aims to examine how eating behaviors of young adults relate to their current weight status and dietary patterns and to explore longitudinal associations with eating behaviors in early childhood. METHODS: Study participants are young adults (n = 698) taking part in the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development. At age 22, eating behaviors were assessed using the Adult Eating Behavior Questionnaire. Dietary patterns were derived from information collected by food frequency questions. Wei

A comparison of food avoidant behaviours and sensory sensitivity in adults with and without Tourette syndrome.

Food selectivity has been shown to be more persistent and severe in children with Tourette syndrome (TS) compared to their typically developing peers. The current study aimed to examine differences in food selectivity, food neophobia and Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID)-associated behaviours, between adults with and without TS. Fifty-three adults diagnosed with TS were compared to 53 neurotypical adults and completed the following measures online: Adult Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (AEBQ), Nine-Item Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake disorder screen (NIAS), Food Neophobia Scal

The relationship between appetite and food preferences in British and Australian children.

BACKGROUND: Appetitive traits and food preferences are key determinants of children's eating patterns but it is unclear how these behaviours relate to one another. This study explores relationships between appetitive traits and preferences for fruits and vegetables, and energy dense, nutrient poor (noncore) foods in two distinct samples of Australian and British preschool children. METHODS: This study reports secondary analyses of data from families participating in the British GEMINI cohort study (n = 1044) and the control arm of the Australian NOURISH RCT (n = 167). Food preferences were as

Beyond Picky Eating.

Joseph is a 20-month-old boy who was thriving and developing well before a 4-day hospitalization for paralytic ileus at 11 months of age. Joseph is the first child born to parents who immigrated to the United States from Southeast Asia 3 years ago. Before the hospitalization, Joseph consumed 3 meals and 480 to 600 mL of milk daily. Oral feedings were restricted during the hospitalization with subsequent rejection of foods upon reintroduction of oral feeds. This resulted in 2 kg of weight loss by follow-up at 13 months. Joseph was referred to the multidisciplinary feeding and nutrition clinic a

Fussy eating in toddlers: A content analysis of parents' online support seeking.

The development of healthy eating habits in childhood is essential to reducing later risk of obesity. However, many parents manage fussy eating in toddlerhood with ineffective feeding practices that limit children's dietary variety and reinforce obesogenic eating behaviours. Understanding parents' feeding concerns and support needs may assist in the development of feeding interventions designed to support parents' uptake of responsive feeding practices. A total of 130 original posts by parents of toddlers (12-36 months) were extracted from the online website Reddit's 'r/Toddlers' community dis

The Distinctive Clinical Profiles of Children With Autism Suffering From Different Subtypes of Rome IV Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders.

Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) are prevalent in children with autism and can interact with the neuropsychiatric symptoms bidirectionally. Moreover, FGIDs may affect feeding to jeopardize nutritional intake. Existing research often overlooks the heterogeneity of FGIDs. Understanding the clinical correlates of individual FGID subtypes may clarify the underlying gut-brain interactions to guide management. This study compared the core autistic symptoms, co-occurring psychopathologies, feeding behavior and dietary intake among 737 Chinese children with autism (mean age = 7.76 years;

Picky Eating in Childhood: Associations With Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: To test whether childhood picky eating (PE)-a behavior previously linked to many forms of psychopathology-is specifically associated with symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). METHODS: We investigated the relationship between PE and symptoms of several forms of psychopathology in two separate observational samples: a sample of 110 children (5 and 6 years old) and a sample of 210 children (8 and 9 years old) drawn from a longitudinal study. In each sample, regression models based on psychiatric symptoms or diagnoses were used to assess the specificity of PE associations w

Impact of a home-based obesity prevention intervention on children's eating behaviours: Findings from the Guelph Family Health Study randomised controlled trial.

Children's eating behaviours are important determinants of childhood obesity; however, few studies have examined whether early childhood obesity prevention interventions influence these behaviours. This study investigated the impact of a home-based obesity prevention intervention on children's eating behaviours. The Guelph Family Health Study is a randomised controlled trial of a 6-month obesity prevention intervention focused on establishing healthful household routines among 285 families with preschool-aged children. A total of 384 children (3.5 ± 1.3 years old, 50.3% girls, 20.2% at risk fo
