Food hypersensitivity.

Food allergy is one of several causes of adverse reactions to foods. The underlying immunologic mechanism varies from one manifestation to another, hence no current single laboratory test can be expected to be positive in every case. The diagnosis could be suggested by information gathered from the medical history or screening procedures, such as trials of elimination diets, the food/symptom diary, skin testing, and in vitro-specific IgE antibody measurement. All foods suspected by any of the aforementioned methods should be subjected to verification by appropriate elimination-challenge testin

[Food hypersensitivities].

Food hypersensitivity includes adverse reactions to food which are most often mediated by IgE. Food allergy is the first atopic disease. Food-sensitized individuals can develop allergic reactions such as atopic dermatitis, urticaria, angioedema, rhinitis, asthma or digestive symptoms. Anaphylactic shock is the most severe reaction of immediate hypersensitivity. The prevalence of food allergy has drastically increased during the last years. Numerous food products can be involved, with special emphasis on masked allergens in processed foods. The diagnosis of food hypersensitivity is based on cli

Enterocytes in Food Hypersensitivity Reactions.

Food hypersensitivity reactions are adverse reactions to harmless dietary substances, whose causes are hidden within derangements of the complex immune machinery of humans and mammals. Until recently, enterocytes were considered as solely absorptive cells providing a physical barrier for unwanted lumen constituents. This review focuses on the enterocytes, which are the hub for innate and adaptive immune reactions. Furthermore, the ambiguous nature of enterocytes is also reflected in the fact that enterocytes can be considered as antigen-presenting cells since they constitutively express major

Hypersensitivity reactions to food additives.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To provide an updated concise review on food additives adverse reactions, diagnosis, and management. RECENT FINDINGS: Despite the common use of food additives, their adverse reactions seem to be very rare in the general population (0.01-0.23%) but higher in atopic individuals (2-7%). Probably because of the difficulty in diagnosis, most of the available information is based on case reports or small series. Reported reactions are mostly mild and may affect the skin, the gastrointestinal tract, or the airways, and rarely anaphylaxis. SUMMARY: Food additives should be suspect

IgE-mediated food hypersensitivity disorders.

Food allergy has become a serious health concern especially in developed countries in the past two decades. In general population approximately 4-6% of children and 1-3% of adults experience food allergy. The article reviews IgE-mediated food hypersensitivity disorders. Epidemiology, Mechanism, Clinical manifestations, Genetically modified crops (GMOs), Diagnosis, Prevention and Treatment of IgE-mediated food allergies are discussed. The investigations show that over 90% of IgE-mediated food allergies in childhood are caused by: cow's milk, hen's egg, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, fish and s

Hypersensitivity reactions to food additives.

Only seldom have food additives been shown to cause true allergic (immunological) reactions. Adverse effects due to various pharmacological or other mechanisms are much more common. The individual tolerance may be decreased for one reason or another, and may fluctuate from time to time. Many patients suffering from food additive reactions have atopic constitutions and such clinical symptoms as flexural dermatitis, rhinitis and asthma. The most important skin symptoms caused by food additives are urticaria, angioneurotic edema, and contact urticaria. Azo dyes, benzoic acid and several other com

[Hypersensitivity reactions to food additives].

Food additives are ingredients that are intentionally added to food in order to modify its physical, chemical, biological, or sensorial characteristics. Food additives may act as allergens and generate IgE-mediated immune reactions, or they may act as pseudo allergens and generate non-IgE-mediated immune reactions. Such reactions can generate diverse clinical pictures or they may exacerbate diseases as diverse as eosinophilic esophagitis, bronchial asthma, atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, chronic urticaria, or anaphylaxis. Thousands of food additives are being used daily in industrialize

Food hypersensitivity allergy or malabsorption.

The terms milk allergy, milk sensitivity, and milk intolerance are used in the medical literature with different meanings. Milk allergy and lactase deficiency to which they are usually referring can be specifically differentiated and diagnosed. A modification of the Rinkel oral test meal can be used to separate these two entities for medical diagnostic accuracy and understanding.

Food and hypersensitivity in functional dyspepsia.

It has long been known that stress affects both the stomach and colon, as shown by the very high prevalence of gastrointestinal symptoms among patients with psychiatric illness. The source may be limbic or peripheral, involving encoded memories or physiological changes. It is important to realise that physical symptoms such as those of functional dyspepsia do not only mean that the patient has a stomach disorder which needs to be identified and treated with specific pharmacological remedies, they often represent, in metaphorical and symbolic form, a state of disharmony brought about a specific

Food allergy and non-allergic food hypersensitivity in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown a 10-fold discrepancy of self-reported food-induced symptoms and physician-diagnosed food hypersensitivity. Little information is available on the prevalence of food hypersensitivity in unselected paediatric populations. No data were available for German children. OBJECTIVE: To study the perception of food-induced symptoms in the paediatric population, to investigate the allergens accused, to objectify patients' reports, and to identify subgroups at risk of having food-induced allergy (FA) or non-allergic food hypersensitivity (NAFH) reactions. METHODS

[Food hypersensitivity: skin test with commercial food extracts or natural products?].

In 46 patients with a suspected history of food allergy, we performed scratch tests using commercial food extracts (CF) in comparison with natural food products (NF). We found that NF brought about significantly stronger reactions than CF: 77% of the skin tests with NF were positive, whereas 75% of the tests with CF equivalents yielded negative or questionably positive results. We conclude, therefore, that in case of suspected food allergy, testing with CF only is not sufficient.

The self-management work of food hypersensitivity.

BACKGROUND: Food hypersensitivity (FH) has received considerable attention in the scientific community in recent years. However, little attention has been given to the efforts people make to manage their FH. We aimed to explore these efforts by using Normalization Process Theory, which is a conceptual framework formerly used to describe the self-management 'work' of long-term conditions. METHODS: We carried out qualitative individual interviews with 16 women with FH. Transcripts from recorded interviews were analyzed using template analysis. RESULTS: 16 women participated; some had diagnoses

The prevalence of food hypersensitivity in young adults.

rising prevalence of food hypersensitivity (FHS) and severe allergic reactions to foods have been reported in the last decade. However, little is known on the prevalence in young adults. This study estimated the prevalence of FHS to the most common allergenic foods in an unselected population of young adults. We investigated a cohort of 1272 young adults 22 years of age by questionnaire, skin prick test (SPT) and histamin release (HR) followed by oral challenge to the most common allergenic foods. FHS was divided into primary and secondary FHS. Primary FHS was defined as being independent of p

Soy hypersensitivity in children with food allergy.

To evaluate humoral (IgE antibodies) and clinical (positive challenge test) soy hypersensitivity prevalence, we studied 317 children (271 boys and 100 girls) with a median age of 5 months (range 1-120) who visited the Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology of the Pediatric Department of the University of Roma "La Sapienza" because of histories and symptoms suggestive of food allergy. Atopic dermatitis (AD) was present in 247/317 children (78%), diarrhea in 19 (6%), urticaria in 22 (7%), and rhinitis and/or asthma in 29 (9%). All children underwent diagnostic procedures including family an

Immediate food hypersensitivity reactions on the first known exposure to the food.

We report 8 infants with immediate hypersensitivity reactions to foods (milk, egg, or peanut), occurring at the first-known exposure. Each developed symptoms within the first hour, but these generally settled within 2 hours. Sensitisation to the food concerned was demonstrated by positive immediate allergen skin prick tests in every case. Symptoms experienced included irritability, erythematous rash, urticaria, angio-oedema, vomiting, rhinorrhoea, and cough. Five infants were being followed prospectively and 4 were clinically tolerant of the food by age 16 months. The most likely route of sens
