Cooking skills play a relevant role in food security, which encompasses the availability, accessibility, utilization, and stability of food. While previous discussions have mainly focused on accessibility, particularly economic access through food prices and income, this article explores the dimension of food utilization by analyzing the relation between food insecurity and cooking-related variables. We conducted a survey of 106 low-income households in an urban area of Santiago, Chile. Food insecurity was measured using the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES) developed by the FAO. Using p

Food allergy is a substantial public health concern associated with risk of severe or potentially life-threatening reactions and requiring life-altering changes in dietary habits. This increasingly prevalent health concern is associated with adverse medical, nutritional, psychosocial, and economic effects on the estimated 32 million affected individuals in the United States. Management of food allergy requires life-altering dietary modifications and constant vigilance to avoid implicated allergens to minimize the risk of anaphylaxis, which can lead to considerable anxiety and reduced quality o

INTRODUCTION: Food insecurity (FI), defined as "limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods, or limited or uncertain ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways," affects over 12% of US households. Embarrassment persists for patients with FI, and due to the potential consequences of FI, including increased utilization of the health care system, it is important to find causes and potential interventions for FI. The purpose of this project was to better understand FI from the patient perspective, including contributing factors, perceived health

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity (FI) is an important public health issue for US veterans. For many veterans, civilian life is fraught with service-incurred health issues and socioeconomic challenges, each risk factors for FI. The FI literature on veterans is limited due to insufficient coverage of the topic's complexity and the methods used to study it in this population. No published analysis has evaluated how FI has been examined in US veterans.
OBJECTIVES: We assessed how FI has been examined in US military veterans by identifying (1) the major content areas, or domains, studied in association

BACKGROUND: There is a causal relationship between parental incarceration (PI) and childhood food insecurity (FI). This is a pressing policy issue given that public assistance designed to curb hunger (i.e., Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) is often revoked due to incarceration which, on top of the removal of a household income source, can significantly alter children's food access. Yet questions remain regarding the prevalence of FI among youth with incarcerated parents, as well as the interplay of parent-child coresidence, race/ethnicity, and geographic region.

Despite tremendous advances in care for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and increased funding for treatment, morbidity and mortality due to HIV/AIDS in developing countries remains unacceptably high. A major contributing factor is that >800 million people remain chronically undernourished globally, and the HIV epidemic largely overlaps with populations already experiencing low diet quality and quantity. Here, we present an updated review of the relationship between HIV infection, nutritional deficiencies, and food insecurity and consider efforts to interrupt this cycle at a progra

BACKGROUND: Obesity and obesity-related comorbidities are increasing among older adults. Food insecurity is a nutrition-related factor that coexists with obesity among low-income individuals. The majority of the research on the food insecurity-obesity paradox has been conducted on low-income mothers and children, with research lacking on large diverse samples of older adults.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess gender disparities in the association between food insecurity and overweight and obesity among low-income older adults.

This study was undertaken to understand food insecurity from the perspective of households who experienced it. The results of group interviews and personal interviews with 98 low-income households from urban and rural areas in and around Québec City, Canada, elicited the meaning of "enough food" for the households and the range of manifestations of food insecurity. Two classes of manifestations characterized the experience of food insecurity: (1) its core characteristics: a lack of food encompassing the shortage of food, the unsuitability of both food and diet and a preoccupation with continui

OBJECTIVE: While disparities in adolescent sleep health are well recognized, few studies focus on sleep regularity, a sleep parameter associated with negative physical and mental health consequences. This study aimed to evaluate the association between socio-contextual factors and sleep regularity in healthy adolescents recruited from primary care.
METHODS: Data were derived from the baseline assessment for a pilot clinical trial that investigated a digital sleep intervention for teens aged 12 to 14. Socio-contextual factors included cut-off utilities, food insecurity, housing insecurity, nei

Australia is experiencing a current juxtaposition between large amounts of food waste and increasing food insecurity. Surplus food produced by Australian hospitals is currently sent to landfill but could be temporarily repurposed to support food-insecure individuals and families until large-scale food system reform is achieved. We comment on potential uses for this surplus 'food waste', including four strategies: medically tailored meals, food provision at discharge, donation and internal hospital system reuse. These strategies could simultaneously reduce hospital food waste while providing fo

The health problems of low-income communities and their relationship to food insecurity are a widespread problem worldwide. Understanding the complex relationship between these two conditions of food insecurity and health outcomes is the focus of this study. In addressing these issues, managing food security and adopting comprehensive strategies that consider the broader public health of the poor and socially vulnerable requires a multi-pronged approach that integrates sustainable food systems, social protection interventions, community engagement, and nutrition-specific interventions. OBJECTIVES: To determine the relationship between food insecurity and periodontitis among adults in the United States (US).
METHODS: Secondary analysis of the 2009-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data. The sample included 6,108 US participants aged ≥ 30 years in a probability weighted sample. Periodontitis status was measured in full-month oral examinations at 6 sites per tooth for clinical attachment loss and periodontal probing depth. Food insecurity was assessed by the 18-item US Food Security Survey Module.
RESULTS: Controlling for covariates, multiple logistic regr

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review discusses the epidemiology of food insecurity (FI) and its consequences in children with congenital heart disease. We aimed to highlight current interventions to screen and address food insecurity in the context of pediatric cardiology and to offer strategies for providers to engage in this meaningful work.
RECENT FINDINGS: Food insecurity is consistently associated with poor health outcomes in children. In the United States, 17.3% of households with children experience FI. Nonwhite and single-parent families are disproportionately affected. Interestingly, becau

Fired bricks are used for construction purposes over the millennia, going back to the Indus Valley Civilization. The traditional brick-making process involves removal of agriculturally productive topsoil rich in clay and soil organic matter contents. In addition to the removal of the fertile topsoil and accelerated degradation by other processes, the traditional clay brick making process also emits CO2 and other gases into the atmosphere. Therefore, the present study aims to assess the impact of brick making in India on: (i) the magnitude of annual CO2 emission and (ii) the loss of agricultura
