A Simple Differential Microwave Imaging Approach for In-Line Inspection of Food Products.

Microwave imaging has been recently proposed as alternative technology for in-line inspection of packaged products in the food industry, thanks to its non-invasiveness and the low-cost of the equipment. In this framework, simple and effective detection/imaging strategies, able to reveal the presence of foreign bodies that may have contaminated the product during the packaging stage, are needed to allow real-time and reliable detection, thus avoiding delays along the production line and limiting occurrence of false detections (either negative or positive). In this work, a novel detection/imagin

Machine learning and food inspection: use of Bayesian Network modeling to support official controls in the food industries.

This study aims to develop a machine learning model capable of predicting the type of non-compliance (NC) most likely to be detected by competent authorities during official control of food establishments based on their structural, product, and management characteristics. A Bayesian Network (BN) model was developed using data from 145 NCs detected by the Local Health Authority of Messina during 588 official controls performed on 101 approved food establishments between 2018 and 2021. The NCs were classified into 10 distinct categories based on the requirement not met: i) structural and equipme

HSI-AgriFoodAnomaly, a hyperspectral dataset for foreign object detection in agri-food inspection.

Ensuring food safety in agri-food production requires reliable inspection data for detecting foreign objects and other contamination risks. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is a relevant non-destructive modality for this purpose because it combines spatial information with detailed spectral responses. This Data Descriptor presents HSI-AgriFoodAnomaly, an open hyperspectral image dataset acquired under conveyor-based industrial-like conditions for foreign object annotation in an oat, white-chocolate and dark-chocolate mixture. The dataset contains 147 calibrated hyperspectral cubes, associated red-g

Risk based meat hygiene--examples on food chain information and visual meat inspection.

The Regulation (EC) No. 854/2004 refers in particularly to a broad spectrum of official supervision of products of animal origin. The supervision should be based on the most current relevant information which is available. The proposal presented includes forms for implementation of Food Chain Information (FCI) as laid down in the Regulation (EC) No. 853/2004 as well as suggestions for the implementation of the visual inspection and criteria for a practical approach to assist the competent authority and the business operator. These suggestions are summarised in two forms including the FCI and p

Source attribution at the food sub-product level for the development of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency risk assessment model.

Decreasing the health burden caused by foodborne pathogens is challenging and it depends on the identification of the most significant hazards and food sources causing illnesses, so adequate mitigation strategies can be implemented. In this regard, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has developed the Establishment-based Risk Assessment (ERA) model, so that a more effective and efficient allocation of resources can be assigned to the highest food safety risk areas. To assess risk, the model considers the type of food sub-products being manufactured by establishments and its scope is lim

Vision-Based Automated Inspection of Box Meals for Food Portion Defects and Foreign Object Detection.

Automated inspection of prepared meals is important for improving food safety, quality assurance, and production efficiency. However, vision-based inspection remains challenging because boxed meals contain multiple adjacent food items with irregular shapes, varying portion sizes, and visually similar appearances, while oily surfaces may introduce specular reflections that degrade image quality. This study presents a vision-based framework for multi-object recognition and quantitative defect analysis in complex meal images, with Chinese-style lunch boxes used as representative test samples. Association between food control inspection grades and regional incidence of infectious foodborne diseases in Finland.

We studied regional food control inspection grades and their relation to regional incidence of domestically acquired foodborne diseases (caused by Campylobacter spp. Salmonella spp. enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC), and Listeria monocytogenes) using food control inspection data of local food business operators and infectious disease data from 2014 to 2019 from Finland. We observed that inferior overall inspection grades were associated with increased incidence of Salmonella infections (p=0.02). Specifically, inferior grades on cleanliness of facilities, surfaces, and equipment were as

Monitoring of domestic and imported eggs for veterinary drug residues by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) routinely monitors the Canadian food supply to ensure that the levels of antibiotic residues are below the stated regulatory guidelines. Over a two-year period, both domestic and imported eggs in Canada were analyzed for a number of veterinary drugs. These included chloramphenicol, beta-lactams, fluoroquinolones, halofuginone, macrolides, sulfonamides, tetracyclines, decoquinate, and coccidiostats. More than 99% of the samples screened were found to be free of any veterinary drug residue. The remainder were found to contain tetracyclines, sulfonamides

A Simple Microwave Imaging System for Food Product Inspection through a Symmetry-Based Microwave Imaging Approach.

In the food industry, there is a growing demand for cost-effective methods for the inline inspection of food items able to non-invasively detect small foreign bodies that may have contaminated the product during the production process. Microwave imaging may be a valid alternative to the existing technologies, thanks to its inherently low-cost and its capability of sensing low-density contaminants. In this paper, a simple microwave imaging system specifically designed to enable the inspection of a large variety of food products is presented. The system consists of two circularly loaded antipoda

Identification and selection of food safety-related risk factors to be included in the Canadian Food Inspection Agency's Establishment-based Risk Assessment model for Hatcheries.

Towards the continuous improvement of its inspection system, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is developing an Establishment-based Risk Assessment model for Hatcheries to allocate inspection resources based on the food safety risk associated with the Canadian hatcheries falling under its jurisdiction. The objectives of the current study were to identify and select critical food safety-related risk factors that would be included in this model, with a main focus on Salmonella. A literature review was used to develop a comprehensive list of risk factors that could potentially contribute

Suitability of bovine portion condemnations at provincially-inspected abattoirs in Ontario Canada for food animal syndromic surveillance.

BACKGROUND: Abattoir condemnations may play an important role in a food animal syndromic surveillance system. Portion condemnation data may be particularly useful, as these data can provide more specific information on health outcomes than whole carcass condemnation data. Various seasonal, secular, disease, and non-disease factors have been previously identified to be associated with whole carcass condemnation rates in Ontario provincial abattoirs; and if ignored, may bias the results of quantitative disease surveillance methods. The objective of this study was to identify various seasonal, se

Molecular and phenotypic characterization of Listeria monocytogenes from U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service surveillance of ready-to-eat foods and processing facilities.

A panel of 501 Listeria monocytogenes isolates obtained from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service monitoring programs for ready-to-eat (RTE) foods were subtyped by multilocus genotyping (MLGT) and by sequencing the virulence gene inlA, which codes for internalin. MLGT analyses confirmed that clonal lineages associated with previous epidemic outbreaks were rare (7.6%) contaminants of RTE meat and poultry products and their production environments. Conversely, sequence analyses revealed mutations leading to 11 different premature stop codons (PMSCs) in inlA, incl

Understanding the Relation between Establishment Food Safety Management and Salmonella Risk Factor Violations Cited during Routine Inspections.

Restaurants are a frequent setting for outbreaks and sporadic cases of Salmonella. The relationship among food safety management characteristics, compliance with procedures to reduce Salmonella-associated risk factors (as found during routine inspections), and the likelihood that an establishment has experienced a sporadic Salmonella case was assessed. Individual risk factor violations associated with Salmonella transmission pathways were identified by a literature review. Data from 546 routine inspection reports collected from July 2016 to June 2017, including 25 from restaurants that had exp
