BACKGROUND: While the agricultural sector is a known contributor to antimicrobial resistance (AMR), the potential role of food loss and waste (FLW) in AMR dissemination has been largely overlooked. FLW, a byproduct of inefficient food systems, poses economic, environmental, and food security challenges. It may also act as a reservoir and vector for antimicrobial resistance genes and antibiotic-resistant bacteria, contributing to the environmental spread of AMR if improperly managed. This narrative review assessed the presence, fate, and risks of AMR in FLW management.

Struvite formation during composting through supplementation of Mg and P salts conserved nitrogen but in the same time increased the electrical conductivity (EC) of the compost limiting its application. Therefore the present study aimed at utilizing zeolite to control the EC under 'struvite' composting of food waste. Zeolite at 5% and 10% (dry weight basis) was supplemented to the composting mass receiving Mg and P salts and compared with treatment with Mg and P salts only and the control without any amendment. Addition of Mg and P salts effectively buffered the pH to ∼8.0 but also increased t

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12.3 and the Malabo Declaration both address the critical issue of food loss and waste (FLW), but they differ in scope, timelines and regional focus. While SDG 12.3 provides a global framework and target of 2030, the Malabo Declaration reflects Africa's pressing need to reduce FLW by 2025. Despite these targets and focus on FLW reduction by the global community, high FLW of fruits and vegetables continues to persist in many parts of Africa due to systemic constraints related to limitations in governance, financing and knowledge. It is estim

BACKGROUND: Food waste persists as a global challenge, with upstream preventive technological innovations still insufficiently evaluated for their sustainability performance despite policy pressure and the Sustainable Development Goals. The objective of this article is to present a sustainability assessment, from a life-cycle perspective, of an innovative food waste prevention and reduction (FLWPR) action that integrates multiple technologies within the fresh potato supply chain and to examine to what extent the food waste hierarchy aligns with multidimensional sustainability criteria. The int

BACKGROUND: Food loss and waste undermine the resilience and sustainability of global food systems, jeopardising progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Adopting healthier and more sustainable diets could help reduce global food loss and waste, but the potential trade-offs on food loss and waste trends and interactions with standalone reduction policies remain largely unexplored. We aimed to investigate the effects of reducing food loss and waste within the context of a global dietary transition by 2050, shedding light on the synergies and trade-offs between two crucial polic

Food loss and waste (FLW) is a major challenge to food system sustainability, including aquatic foods. We investigated aquatic FLW in the food supply of the United States, the largest importer of aquatic food globally, using primary and secondary data and life cycle methodology. We show that there are significant differences in FLW among species, production technology, origin and stage of supply chain. We estimate total aquatic FLW was 22.7%, which is 43-55% lower than earlier estimates reported in the literature, illustrating the importance of applying a disaggregated approach. Production los

The impact of food loss and waste (FLW) generation on food supply chains' (FSC) sustainability represents a challenge embodied in the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12.3. This problem requires a methodology to measure such an impact in a rigorous, holistic, and standardized way that can be applied to any FSC. This paper aims to develop and validate a single index to assess the readiness of FSCs to implement FLW prevention strategies and measure their impact: the so-called FOODRUS index. The co-creation methodology followed incorporates experts and FSC stakeholders feedback. The index has b

A thermotolerant, odor-suppressing microbial agent was inoculated into food-waste (FW) composting to systematically evaluate its influence on odorants, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), microbial community structure, extracellular enzyme activities, and the transcriptional profile of nitrogen- and sulfur-cycle genes. Compared with the uninoculated control, cumulative emissions of NH3, H2S, ethanol, and acetaldehyde declined by 73.45%, 65.30%, 40.22%, and 37.20%, respectively, in the bio-augmented reactor. NH3 High-throughput 16S rRNA sequencing revealed that the inoculation enhanced the micro

Food waste is a major obstacle in managing inequality, optimizing living conditions, and promoting prosperity, specifically among the world's most starving economies. Its influences stretch to preventing food supply; it alters financial maturation, complicates environmental issues decomposition, and incorporates raised food operating expenses. Monitoring food waste is implicitly challenging due to confusion arising from its authenticity, extent, geographic location, and schedule; all factors prevent decision-making procedures. This research proposes Aczel-Alsina operational laws to solve the o

This study presents a goal-oriented life cycle assessment of end-of-life strategies for food-contaminated polylactic acid (PLA) packaging, an increasingly prevalent waste stream driven by the growth of food delivery services. Using empirically measured contamination data from 100 delivery meals, four recycling pathways (five scenarios) were evaluated: thermal recycling, mechanical recycling, chemical recycling, and anaerobic digestion (AD)-based systems. Net energy balance, non-biogenic CO2 emissions (CO2E), and daily operational cost (OpCost) were quantified for a functional unit of one day o

Upcycling biowaste into useful biochemicals, including medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) represents a crucial node in the transition toward a circular economy. However, the output and stability of anaerobic microbiomes for MCFAs production are strongly anchored on the effective inhibition of competing pathways, including methanogenesis, while stimulating the growth of bacteria producing MCFAs. Here, we proposed a mixotrophic chain elongation (CE) concept for producing MCFAs from food waste by exploring carbon monoxide (CO) as a methanogenic inhibitor. Our findings suggest that CO supplementatio

Food waste offers a potential source for bioethanol production, but productivity depends on the chemical composition of the raw materials and the processes involved. However, assessment of the environmental sustainability of these processes is often absent and can be carried out using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. This study aimed to perform an LCA on bioethanol production from mixtures of different wastes, including tubers, fruits, and processed foods, focusing on the gate-to-gate phase. The inventory included a standard scenario and an optimized scenario, which eliminated dryi

Packaging research is one of the primary fields of study in the food ecosystem that go beyond conventional containment and protection. Innovative packaging recognizes the importance of food shelf-life stability, minimizes environmental effect, promotes health, and supports the circular economy. Highlighting the innovations in food packaging is crucial to ensuring that consumers enjoy healthful food. Consequently, insights into the incorporation of agents like antioxidants, antimicrobial, oxygen/moisture absorbers directly into the packaging material to achieve desired functionalities are under

European households waste > 70 kg of food per capita yearly. With the deadline for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals rapidly approaching, the urgency of the food waste situation is increasing, but attempts at solving the problem are ineffective. This study aimed to explore the problem of household food waste (HFW) at a European level and subsequently explain why interventions are failing. It used a meta-analysis exploring 77 studies into HFW and behavioural drivers of waste. Generalised results show richer countries waste less, while poorer countries have a more complex relation

The short shelf lives of fruits and vegetables, caused by a series of metabolic changes, lead to significant postharvest losses. Postharvest losses have a destructive effect on the economy, food security, and the environment. Traditional petroleum-based packaging, a static barrier incompatible with the dynamic physiological processes of fruits and vegetables, remains a hazardous environmental issue. In contrast, protein-based films for preserving fruits and vegetables are biodegradable and biocompatible. Bioactive components can be added to protein films to extend the shelf lives of fruits and

Food spoilage is a major cause of food loss, while it remains less understood in complex, multi-component foods than in single-ingredient products. This review reframes spoilage in such foods as a community-driven ecological process, not simply the result of single dominant organisms, and argues that spoilage is best understood through microbial activity rather than microbial presence or relative abundance alone. We develop this framework around three central ideas: (i) ingredient-derived microbiotas interact within a shared matrix, so spoilage depends on microbial succession and competition d

In this study, a potential waste management strategy was developed for the evaluation of marine and freshwater fish waste, which is chemically very similar. To this end, an unmet need has been addressed by converting by-products from rainbow trout, a cold-water fish, into functional and nutritious ingredients. The possibilities of recycling aquaculture processing wastes and using them as food supplements within the scope of green chemistry applications, sustainability, and safe product targets were investigated in three stages. In line with this objective, in the first stage, processing progre

This research determines the potential impact of reducing food waste on future energy consumption and pollutant emissions. The study uses system dynamics modelling to simulate the complex link between population, food demand, food waste output and their interactions with energy consumption in the food system and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Scenarios are developed by considering two elements: a reduction in food waste and an increase in energy output. Based on a case study of Delhi, food demand and energy consumption are expected to rise by 6% and 35% every year, respectively, from 2023 to

Bakery waste is a promising feedstock for the circular economy; however, its use for producing medium-chain carboxylates (MCCs) via microbial chain elongation remains unexplored. This study investigated pretreatment, pertraction, and chain elongation strategies to convert bakery waste into n-caproate and n-caprylate. Bakery waste was mechanically and enzymatically processed, and different inocula were tested to optimize the conversion of the resulting glucose-rich solution into lactate and ethanol (intermediates). These intermediates were fed into continuous chain-elongation systems that opera
