Common pediatric foot dermatoses.

The pediatric foot dermatoses known as tinea pedis, shoe dermatitis, and juvenile plantar dermatosis are seen commonly in clinical practice. A knowledge of the clinical presentations and causes of these disorders can help pediatric and family nurse practitioners identify, diagnose, and treat childhood rashes of the feet. The conventional view in pediatrics is that small children rarely have tinea pedis. However, a 1992 study disputes this claim. Any child who has an atypical or persistent foot rash will need a referral or consultation.

Spectrum of Dermatoses and Infections Affecting the Lower Leg and Foot in an Outpatient Clinic at a Tertiary Care Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Infections and dermatoses of the lower leg and foot can be attributed to factors such as blood stagnation, chemical contact, and abnormal mechanics. These factors make the lower leg and foot more susceptible to microbial infections, contact dermatitis, stasis eczema, ulcers, corns, and calluses. OBJECTIVE: To identify the patterns of infections and dermatoses on the lower leg and foot. METHODS: This study took place between September 2020 and August 2021 at an outpatient dermatology clinic. All patients with lower leg and foot skin conditions were included in the study, irrespect

Topical review: skin infections in the foot and ankle patient.

There are numerous cutaneous disorders that affect the foot, but of these conditions skin infections have the most significant impact on overall patient morbidity and clinical outcome. Skin infections in foot and ankle patients are common, with often devastating consequences if left unrecognized and untreated in both surgical and nonsurgical cases. There is a diverse array of infectious dermatoses that afflict the foot and ankle patient including tinea pedis, onychomycosis, paronychia, pitted keratolysis, verruca, folliculitis, and erysipelas. Prompt diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance of t

Is Patch Test Necessary in Children to Solve the Clinical Conundrum of Foot Eczema.

BACKGROUND: Foot eczema in children is a commonly encountered condition but is associated with diverse etiology, thereby posing a diagnostic challenge. These include atopic eczema, juvenile plantar dermatoses, irritant contact dermatitis, and allergic contact dermatitis. Because of the diverse etiology, it is often difficult to distinguish between the conditions clinically, thereby warranting patch testing for the correct diagnosis. OBJECTIVES: The study was conducted to determine the frequency of positive patch tests among children with foot eczema and to compare them with children with and

Diagnostic accuracy of ultraviolet-induced fluorescence dermoscopy in non-neoplastic dermatoses (general dermatology): A multicentric retrospective comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Preliminary data support the possible use of ultraviolet-induced fluorescence (UVF) dermoscopy in general dermatology, yet no accuracy analysis has been performed so far. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate diagnostic accuracy of UVF dermoscopy in clinically similar non-neoplastic conditions as compared to polarized light-based dermoscopy. METHODS: Patients with dermatoses potentially showing UV-induced findings were considered; cases were grouped according to clinical patterns and controls were also included. [Hand dermatoses in children].

Dermatoses of the hand in children are part of an original entity which can be classified in two groups: a group involving exclusively the hands and another one which is predominantly involving the hands. Attention has been focussed mostly on hand dermatoses in children (acropustulosis of infancy, papular, acrodermatitis, hand foot and mouth disease, subungual, exostosis). We discuss also the diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of scabies in children.

Obesity and dermatology.

Obesity is associated with a number of dermatoses. It affects cutaneous sensation, temperature regulation, foot shape, and vasculature. Acanthosis nigricans is the most common dermatological manifestation of obesity. Skin tags are more commonly associated with diabetes than with obesity. Obesity increases the incidence of cutaneous infections that include: candidiasis, intertigo, candida folliculitis, furunculosis, erythrasma, tinea cruris, and folliculitis. Less common infections include cellulitis, necrotizing fasciitis, and gas gangrene. Leg ulcerations, lymphedema, plantar hyperkeratosis,

Diagnosing onychomycosis.

Onychomycosis is the most prevalent nail disease, representing nearly half of all clinically diagnosed onychopathies. Given the pervasive nature of the disease and that successful treatment depends on the proper identification of the causative organism, accurate and reliable methods of diagnosis are necessary. This article discusses the efficacy of the various methods used for the diagnosis of onychomycosis.

[Skin problems in joggers].

Reports on skin problems in joggers are rare in medical literature. Jogger dermatoses are caused by repeated trauma, mechanic overuse, thermic effects, allergic-toxic reactions and infectious processes. Most common are bullosis mechanica, piezogenic papules, hyperkeratosis haemorrhagica and subungual haematomas. Contact allergies and infections such as athlete's foot, pitted keratolysis and pyoderma are well-known complications in joggers. Frostbite and actinic damage, abrasions of the nipples, collisions with vehicles and injuries by buzzards are further possible incidents to be reckoned with

Types of onychomycosis.

Onychomycosis may be classified into several types: distal subungual, white superficial, proximal subungual, endonyx, and total dystrophic. Distal subungual onychomycosis (DSO), the most common type, involves the nail bed and, subsequently, the nail plate. White superficial onychomycosis (WSO) usually manifests as superficial white patches with distinct edges on the surface of the nail plate. Proximal subungual onychomycosis results when the fungal organism enters via the cuticle and the ventral aspect of the proximal nail fold. In endonyx onychomycosis, fungal organisms invade the nail plate

A clinical study of dermatoses in diabetes to establish its markers.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous manifestations of diabetes mellitus generally appear subsequent to the development of the disease, but they may be the first presenting signs and in some cases they may precede the primary disease manifestation by many years. AIMS: The aim of our study was to study the spectrum of dermatoses in diabetics, to know the frequency of dermatoses specific to diabetes mellitus (DM), and to establish the mucocutaneous markers of DM. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was conducted at a diabetic clinic and our department between September 2008 and June 2010. Two hundred and twenty-
