Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is the most common anatomical cause of an interatrial shunt. It is usually asymptomatic but may cause paradoxical embolism, manifesting as stroke, myocardial infarction or visceral/peripheral ischaemia. PFO is a risk factor for stroke and may be associated with migraine with aura. New evidence suggests PFO closure reduces the risk of recurrent ischaemic stroke in a highly selected population of stroke survivors: those aged 60 years or younger with a cryptogenic stroke syndrome, a large right-to-left shunt, an atrial septal aneurysm and no evidence of atrial fibrillat

Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a common developmental anomaly that allows for the passage of blood and other substances from the venous to the arterial circulation. The study of PFO closure has been challenging due to widely available off-label closures performed outside the clinical trial setting. To date, no study has demonstrated benefit of closure using intention-to-treat analyses. Secondary and subpopulation analyses suggest that there is benefit to closure in patients with atrial septal aneurysms and/or substantial degrees of right-to-left shunting. This article reviews the history, assoc

Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is the most common congenital heart abnormality of fetal origin and is present in approximately ∼25% of the worldwide adult population. PFO is the consequence of failed closure of the foramen ovale, a normal structure that exists in the fetus to direct blood flow directly from the right to the left atrium, bypassing the pulmonary circulation. PFO has historically been associated with an increased risk of stroke, the mechanism of which has been attributed to the paradoxical embolism of venous thrombi that shunt through the PFO directly to the left atrium. However, sev

A newborn infant with primary restrictive foramen ovale, tubular hypoplasia of the aortic arch, and some other developmental defects is described. This combination resulted in fetal hydrops, as was shown by ultrasonography. The child died 24 h after birth due to low output syndrome and extensive bronchopneumonia. The pathogenesis of this clinical entity is discussed.

INTRODUCTION: An anatomical study was undertaken to note the shape of the foramen ovale(FO), foramen spinosum (FS) & presence or absence of canalis innominatus. FO is present in the posterior part of the greater wing of sphenoid. FS is located posterolareral to foramen ovale. Aims & Objective: We attempted this study to find out the variations in shape, bony growth & divisions of FO & FS in available dry human skulls.
MATERIAL & METHODS: We studied 100 human skulls available in the Department of Anatomy MVPS Medical College, Nashik. This study of FO & FS was done in both male & female skulls.

Patent foramen ovale (PFO), an embryonic remnant of the fetal circulation, is present in 20-25% of adults. Although recent observational studies and clinical trials have established the link between PFO-mediated right-to-left shunting with cryptogenic stroke and migraine with aura, the role of a PFO in exacerbating hypoxemic medical conditions (ie, sleep apnea, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pulmonary hypertension, platypnea-orthodeoxia, pulmonary arteriovenous malformation, high-altitude pulmonary edema, and exercise desaturation) remains less understood. PFO-mediated hypoxemia occurs

A patent foramen ovale (PFO) is common and found in nearly 25% of healthy individuals. The majority of patients with PFO remain asymptomatic and they are not at increased risk for developing a stroke. The presence of PFO, however, has been found to be higher in patients with cryptogenic stroke, suggesting there may be a subset of patients with PFO who are indeed at risk for stroke. Paradoxical embolization of venous thrombi through the PFO, which then enter the arterial circulation, is hypothesized to account for this relationship. Although aerated-saline transesophageal echocardiography is th

The foramen ovale is a remnant of the fetal circulation that remains patent in 20-25% of the adult population. Although long overlooked as a potential pathway that could produce pathologic conditions, the presence of a patent foramen ovale (PFO) has been associated with a higher than expected frequency in a variety of clinical syndromes including cryptogenic stroke, migraines, sleep apnea, platypnea-orthodeoxia, deep sea diving associated decompression illness, and high altitude pulmonary edema. A unifying hypothesis is that a chemical or particulate matter from the venous circulation crosses

Observational studies indicate an increased prevalence of patent foramen ovale (PFO) in migraineurs with aura and an increased prevalence of migraine and migraine with aura in patients with PFO but a recent stratified meta-analysis does not support pairwise association between PFO and migraine. There are conflicting data regarding causal relationship between these two conditions. According to recent studies, microembolization might provoke a decrease in cerebral oxygen saturation, thus triggering cortical spreading depression and, thereafter, migraine with aura attack. Release of vasoactive su

Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a flap-like opening between the primum and secundum atrial septum at the level of the fossa ovalis that may persist after birth. There is increasing evidence that PFO is the culprit in paradoxical embolic events in patients with ischemic stroke. Although medical or percutaneous treatment of PFO remains controversial, nowadays percutaneous treatment is widespread in clinical practice. Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is the gold standard in the diagnosis of PFO. This article describes how PFO is detected and how it needs to be properly described by echocardio

After extensive debate, the percutaneous closure of patent foramen ovale (PFO) has been established as a first-line treatment for the secondary prevention of PFO-related stroke in patients between 18 and 60 years old, whereas the role of PFO closure for primary prevention remains controversial. Additionally, in selected cases, PFO closure may be considered beyond these age limits and for other indications such as the treatment of systemic deoxygenation syndromes and the secondary prevention of systemic embolism or decompression sickness, when the PFO has been determined to be causative in the

Although the most common clinical manifestations of a patent foramen ovale (PFO) are cryptogenic stroke and migraine with aura, PFO is also associated with platypnea-orthodeoxia syndrome, obstructive sleep apnea, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with hypoxemia out of proportion to the extent of pulmonary disease. This article will discuss these conditions and summarize the related literature.

"Patent foramen ovale and stroke Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a remnant of the fetal circulation whose role in the occurrence of ischemic stroke is now well established. Trancatheter PFO closure followed by long-term antiplatelet therapy reduces by approximately 60% compared to antithrombotic therapy alone, the risk of stroke recurrence in patients aged 60 years or less with an ischemic stroke attributed to a PFO. Patients with PFO associated with an atrial septal aneurysm or with a large right-to-left shunt might be the best candidates. The superiority of oral anticoagulants over aspirin is

A patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a highly prevalent finding in cryptogenic ischaemic stroke, particularly in young adults. A common challenge in clinical practice is to distinguish between incidental and pathogenic PFO. Some clinical features and tools such as the Risk of Paradoxical Embolism score may help determining the probability of a stroke-related PFO. Nonetheless, the best therapeutic option to reduce stroke recurrence after a cryptogenic stroke with PFO has been a matter of debate for a long time. We review the mechanisms of stroke-related PFO, together with its clinical features and d

Transcatheter closure of patent foramen ovale (PFO) is an effective strategy for preventing recurrence of paradoxical embolism. However, PFO closure is often associated with residual shunt, which is a risk of recurrent stroke. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between the anatomical features of PFO and residual shunt. The degree of residual shunt and its relationship with the anatomical features of PFO were evaluated in 106 patients who underwent PFO closure at our institution between March 2011 and January 2022 and in whom contrast transthoracic echocardiography was performed 1 ye

The objective of this study was to provide morphometric analysis of an accessory spine that was found within the lumen of the foramen ovale, as well as to find out whether this structure could mechanically irritate the mandibular nerve. A bifid spine was perceived in the macerated skull of an adult individual. It was located in the anterior part of the left foramen ovale. The overall length of the spine was found to be 1.8 mm. The spine had a homogenous structure, and showed high levels of mineralisation. We conclude that the accessory spine did not compress the mandibular nerve, and that the

BACKGROUND: A "thrombus in transit" is a relatively rare diagnosis involving a thrombus in a patent foramen ovale. Patent foramen ovale occurs in about 25% of the population. A thrombus in transit may lead to paradoxical arterial emboli in the cerebral circulatory system and the extremities, as well as other locations.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 60-year-old male patient with severe pneumonia sepsis appeared to have a thrombus in the right atrium, extending into the left atrium through a patent foramen ovale. The patient was treated with therapeutic anticoagulants. Cerebral embolization occurred desp
