Foraminifera are ubiquitous marine protists that intracellularly accumulate phosphate1, an important macronutrient in marine ecosystems and in fertilizer potentially leaked into the ocean. Intracellular phosphate concentrations can be 100-1,000 times higher than in the surrounding water1. Here we show that phosphate storage in foraminifera is widespread, from tidal flats to the deep sea. The total amount of intracellular phosphate stored in the benthic foraminifer Ammonia confertitesta in the Wadden Sea during a bloom is as high as around 5% of the annual consumption of phosphorus (P) fertiliz

Planktonic foraminifera are a ubiquitous group of calcifying marine protists and among the most affected by modern ecological changes due to climate change. Specifically, at high latitudes in the Atlantic Ocean, they are forced to adapt to rapidly warming sea surface temperatures, referred to as the "Atlantification" of the Arctic. Turborotalita quinqueloba, a spinose species of planktonic foraminifera, is currently proliferating at higher latitudes towards the Arctic Ocean. We conducted a large-scale culturing experiment on Turborotalita quinqueloba for 30 days at i UiT-The Arctic University

Middle Miocene foraminifera from the northern Namibian outer continental shelf are indicators of a period prior to the initiation of the Benguela Upwelling System (BUS). This study provides an update to the occurrence and taxonomy of Miocene foraminifera from the continental margin of Namibia. The taxonomy of 51 benthic and 12 planktic foraminiferal species from the northern Namibian shelf are discussed, their stratigraphic significance given, and their ecological preferences and regional distribution summarised within this study. The identification of extinct planktic foraminifera provided ke

Unicellular protozoa form calcium carbonate tests. It is important to understand the features and mechanisms of its formation. This may shed light on the processes of shell formation in metazoans. One of the most important characteristics of the Protozoa carbonate test is the degree of crystal ordering that can be described by crystallographic texture. The crystallographic texture data of calcite in the foraminifera Nummulites distans (Deshayes) test from the Eocene deposits (Cenozoic, Paleogene) of the Crimea Peninsula are obtained using X-ray diffraction. A very strict orientation of the cry

The size structure of plankton communities is an important determinant of their functions in marine ecosystems. However, few studies have quantified how organism size varies within species across biogeographical scales. Here, we investigate how planktonic foraminifera, a ubiquitous zooplankton group, vary in size across the tropical and subtropical oceans of the world. Using a recently digitized museum collection, we measured shell area of 3,799 individuals of nine extant species in 53 seafloor sediments. We first analyzed potential size biases in the collection. Then, for each site, we obtain

Amphistegina are the most common foraminifers with algal endosymbionts found on reefs and carbonate shelves worldwide. Like zooxanthellate corals and other reef organisms with algal symbionts, Amphistegina respond to photoxidative stress by bleaching. This paper documents ultrastructural changes that occur during bleaching under field and laboratory conditions. Nine chambers from the outer whorl of each of 22 normal-appearing and 11 partly bleached specimens of Amphistegina gibbosa, which were collected from Conch Reef, Florida, USA, were examined using transmission electron microscopy. Benthic foraminifera assemblages, nutrient dynamics of surface and porewater from 10 intertidal sites spanning over two years (2019-2020) covering two major estuaries in Sundarbans mangrove were evaluated to understand role of seasonal precipitation and primary production (driven by eddy nutrients) with a focus on standing crop. Benthic foraminifera abundance ranged between 280 individuals/10 cc in pre-monsoon (2019), 415 individuals/10 cc in post-monsoon 2019 and 630 individuals/10 cc in post-monsoon (2020). Standing crop was highest in post-monsoon coinciding with eddy nutrients driven stoic

Every year, countless millions of litres of oil and other hydrocarbon products spill uncontrollably into the ocean through ship accidents or other human activities. Although the oil floats on the sea surface, many components dissolve in the seawater and, thus, can infiltrate benthic habitats and organisms living at the seafloor. In this study, we investigated the effect of water-soluble compounds from diesel and gasoline on benthic foraminifera (common unicellular eukaryotes). Our results reveal that aqueous diesel extracts have a strong impact on the metabolism of foraminifera through reduced

Climate change is predicted to negatively impact calcification and change the structural integrity of biogenic carbonates, influencing their protective function. We assess the impacts of warming on the morphology and crystallography of Amphistegina lobifera, an abundant benthic foraminifera species in shallow environments. Specimens from a thermally disturbed field area, mimicking future warming, are about 50% smaller compared with a control location. Differences in the position of the ν1 Raman mode of shells between the sites, which serves as a proxy for Mg content and calcification temperatu

The velocity of settling particles is an important determinant of distribution in extinct and extant species with passive dispersal mechanisms, such as plants, corals and phytoplankton. Here, we adapted dynamic scaling, borrowed from engineering, to determine settling velocity. Dynamic scaling leverages physical models with relevant dimensionless numbers matched to achieve similar dynamics to the original object. Previous studies have used flumes, wind tunnels or towed models to examine fluid flow around objects with known velocities. Our novel application uses free-falling models to determine

To assess heavy metals contamination in shallow marine environments using benthic foraminifera as bio-indicators. Forty-six species of foraminifera were found in 33 benthic samples from the Saudi Arabian coast of the Red Sea-Gulf of Aqaba. Forty-six species belonging to 27 genera and 10 families under the Textularina, Rotalina, and Miliolina suborders were recorded in the study area. The most common genera of the recorded fauna were Peneroplis (37.2%), Coscinospira (15.06%), Sorites (10.36%), and Quinqueloculina (7.76%). The influx of clastic sediments would dilute the abundance of foraminifer

Benthic Foraminifera exhibit diverse adaptations to low oxygen (O2) environments, including denitrification, a rare trait among eukaryotes. Denitrifying species store intracellular nitrate (NO3 -), possibly within vacuoles, and contribute significantly to the global marine nitrogen (N) cycle. Additionally, widespread phosphate (PO4 3-) accumulation suggests a role in supporting metabolism under O2-depleted conditions. However, the organelles storing NO3 - and PO4 3- remain unknown, limiting the mechanistic understanding of these alternative metabolic pathways. To investigate the intracellular

RATIONALE: Distribution patterns of foraminifera are controlled by environmental parameters such as temperature, salinity, and nutrient concentrations in each water mass. Since trace elements to Ca ratios of marine microfossil calcite test of foraminifera record environmental and ecological habitat information, we used femtosecond (fs) LA-ICP-MS to obtain accurate chamber-by-chamber Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca, and Na/Ca of four foraminifera species to clarify the impact of foraminiferal depth migration on paleoceanographic reconstruction. The Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca ratios were measured with precision better than 5

Coastal acidification could have widespread impact on marine organisms, affecting the ability of calcifying organisms to build shells and skeletons through calcium carbonate precipitation. As an abundant group of calcifying organisms, some protists within the phylum Foraminifera demonstrate potential success under elevated partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) due to their ability to modulate intracellular pH. However, little is known about their responses under more extreme acidification conditions that are already seen in certain coastal environments. Here we exposed specimens of Haynesi

The Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) has been attributed to a rapid rise in greenhouse gas levels. If so, warming should have occurred at all latitudes, although amplified toward the poles. Existing records reveal an increase in high-latitude sea surface temperatures (SSTs) (8 degrees to 10 degrees C) and in bottom water temperatures (4 degrees to 5 degrees C). To date, however, the character of the tropical SST response during this event remains unconstrained. Here we address this deficiency by using paired oxygen isotope and minor element (magnesium/calcium) ratios of planktonic foram

Marine biogenic calcium carbonate production plays a role in the exchange of CO2 between ocean and atmosphere. The effect of increased CO2 on calcification and on the resulting chemistry of shells and skeletons, however, is only partly understood. Foraminifera are among the main marine CaCO3 producers and the controls on element partitioning and isotope fractionation is the subject of many recent investigations. The enzyme carbonic anhydrase (CA) was, for example, shown to be vital for CaCO3 deposition in benthic foraminifera and indicates their ability to manipulate their intracellular inorga

Floating plastic debris can provide long-lived substrates for attached organisms, but reconstructing the drift history of small consumer items remains difficult. Here we report a colonized plastic bottle cap collected in the northwest Pacific. The cap hosted a tube-building polychaete and an associated assemblage including benthic foraminifera. We combined (1) a census of the fouling community, (2) chamber-level δ18O and δ13C measurements from two Rosalina globularis tests, and (3) Lagrangian drift simulations driven by surface currents to constrain the cap's likely trajectory and timescale. Harbors are often regarded as highly degraded ecosystems, yet their benthic biodiversity remains poorly documented. This study investigated environmental conditions, organic matter sources, pollutants and benthic assemblages over two seasons in the Port of Dunkirk, France, an industrialized and heavily modified transitional water body. Seven subtidal stations were sampled in spring and fall 2020 for water parameters, sediment geochemistry (including trace metals and molecular biomarkers), benthic foraminifera and macrofauna. Species richness and diversity were quantified and multivariate analy

Deep-sea hard substrates host faunal novelties and distinct evolutionary lineages. However, sessile organisms on rocks are difficult to sample and largely unknown at extreme hadal depths. Here, we report a deep hard-substrate fauna (9000 to 10,898 meters), comprising 32 species of six protist and metazoan phyla, most millimeter-sized and new to science, from the Kermadec and Mariana trenches, using the manned submersible Fendouzhe. We show that the filamentous organisms dominating these assemblages are heterotrophic foraminiferans, challenging the earlier chemolithoautotrophic hypothesis. Larg
