Orthotopic Rat Forelimb Transplantation.

Vascularized composite allotransplantation (VCA) involves the transplantation of multiple tissue types -- including skin, muscle, bone, and nerves -- offering a promising reconstructive option for patients with severe traumatic injuries or disfigurements. Despite its transformative potential, VCA has encountered significant challenges such as graft rejection, chronic immunosuppression complications, and neuromuscular recovery's intricacies. We utilize a rat forelimb model as a cost-effective and anatomically relevant platform to address these challenges. The rat forelimb closely mirrors human

Forelimb locomotor assessment scale (FLAS): novel assessment of forelimb dysfunction after cervical spinal cord injury.

We describe here a novel forelimb locomotor assessment scale (FLAS) that assesses forelimb use during locomotion in rats injured at the cervical level. A quantitative scale was developed that measures movements of shoulder, elbow, and wrist joints, forepaw position and digit placement, forelimb-hindlimb coordination, compensatory behaviors adopted while walking, and balance. Female Sprague-Dawley rats received graded cervical contusions ranging from 200 to 230 ("mild," n=11) and 250-290 kdyn ("moderate," n=13) between C5 and C8. Rats were videotaped post-injury as they walked along an alley to

Forelimb lameness in the young patient.

Forelimb lameness is a common problem in young dogs and can be caused by a wide variety of problems. Accurate and comprehensive diagnosis and treatment must be provided for these patients. Differential diagnoses for forelimb lameness in the young patient fall into the categories of congenital abnormalities; developmental disorders; trauma; and infectious, nutritional, metabolic, and neoplastic causes. The etiopathogeneses of many of these disorders are still unknown, and treatment options and prognoses vary tremendously. Until definitive causes are determined, it is the responsibility of veter

The treatment of some fractures of the forelimb in the horse.

Sir Frederick Hobday's service as a Veterinary Officer in the Army Veterinary Corps during the Great War 1914-1918 is recorded. This is followed by a description of the fractures of the distal forelimb which can be treated satisfactorily by surgery, and includes fractures of the carpal, the small metacarpal, the proximal sesamoid bones, the first phalanx and the extensor process of the third phalanx.

Hypothalamic Control of Forelimb Motor Adaptation.

The ability to perform skilled arm movements is central to everyday life, as limb impairments in common neurologic disorders such as stroke demonstrate. Skilled arm movements require adaptation of motor commands based on discrepancies between desired and actual movements, called sensory errors. Studies in humans show that this involves predictive and reactive movement adaptations to the errors, and also requires a general motivation to move. How these distinct aspects map onto defined neural signals remains unclear, because of a shortage of equivalent studies in experimental animal models that

Forelimb Movement Disorder in Rat Experimental Model.

Study of motor activity is an important part of the experimental models of neural disorders of rats. It is used to study effects of the CNS impairment, however studies on the peripheral nervous system lesions are much less frequent. The aim of the study was to extend the spectrum of experimental models of anterior limb movement disorders in rats by blockade of the right anterior limb brachial plexus with the local anesthetic Marcaine (Ma), or with aqua for injection administered into the same location (Aq) (with control intact group C). Two other groups with anterior limb movement disorders un

Unilateral frontal lobe contusion and forelimb function: chronic quantitative and qualitative impairments in reflexive and skilled forelimb movements in rats.

Traumatic brain injury induced by mechanical impacts of the head can be modeled in rats in order to investigate acute and chronic therapy. Because frontal lobe contusion affects the neural representation of the forelimb in both the neocortex and basal ganglia, the purpose of the present experiments was to examine the chronic changes in reflexive and skilled forelimb induced by the injury. Contusions produced a cavity in the sensorimotor cortex, accompanied by shrinkage of the pyramidal tract, loss of cells in the dorsolateral striatum, and enlargement of the lateral ventricle. There were subst

Downclimbing and the evolution of ape forelimb morphologies.

The forelimbs of hominoid primates (apes) are decidedly more flexible than those of monkeys, especially at the shoulder, elbow and wrist joints. It is tempting to link the greater mobility of these joints to the functional demands of vertical climbing and below-branch suspension, but field-based kinematic studies have found few differences between chimpanzees and monkeys when comparing forelimb excursion angles during vertical ascent (upclimbing). There is, however, a strong theoretical argument for focusing instead on vertical descent (downclimbing), which motivated us to quantify the effects

Unilateral forelimb partial aphalangia in a kitten.

Congenital limb deformities are rarely reported in the cat. The macroscopic and radiographic features of aphalangia are described in a 2-month-old male kitten showing a shortened limb that ended, at the level of the carpus, in a stump without digits. A nail was present at the level of the first phalanx and on the palmar surface only two footpads were present. The radiographs showed an absence of phalanges. The first metacarpal and the proximal and distal phalanges of digit 1 were present. The deformed metacarpal bones were reduced in length; the carpal bones were incompletely ossified. This de

Striatal ensembles specify and control granular forelimb actions.

The ability of the brain to control specific fine actions is crucial for survival. The striatum is a critical brain center for both movement and learning, and its dysfunction underlies numerous movement disorders1-9. Whereas activity in the striatum has been classically viewed as invigorating5,10-13 and reinforcing movements12-20, recent studies suggest that striatal activity encodes specific movements21-24. However, it is not known how granular this activity is, and if it indeed controls specific ongoing movements. We designed a task where mice performed two minimally-different forelimb actio

Crocodylian forelimb musculature and its relevance to Archosauria.

The musculoskeletal anatomy of the crocodylian forelimb is documented to facilitate functional morphological studies of extant and extinct archosaurs. Comparative descriptions of muscles of the forelimb of several crocodylian species are presented, including attachment sites, innervation, and anatomical functions. The muscular anatomy of the crocodylian forelimb is highly conservative among the different species; however, interspecific differences do occur. Interspecific anatomical variation is interpreted functionally, and discussed in the context of the terrestrial locomotion of crocodylians

Movements of the forelimbs of the cat during stepping on a treadmill.

In normal cats stepping on a treadmill an analysis has been made of movements of the scapula, shoulder, elbow, wrist and digits. The scapula is capable of making large and complicated movements over the rib cage. In locomotion they may be resolved into a cyclical, similunar movement of the glenoid cavity in the parasagittal plane of the cat's body. The movements of the scapula are rather constant over a wide range of velocities. They most resemble those of the hip which also shows a delay in the onset of extension and no yield phase. It is suggested that movements of the scapula have a high pr

Juvenile Disease Processes Affecting the Forelimb in Canines.

Several juvenile diseases affect the canine forelimb. The most common are hypertrophic osteodystrophy, panosteitis, and retained cartilaginous core. Panosteitis and hypertrophic osteodystrophy tend to be self-limiting, with a good long-term prognosis, although severe cases can develop. These diseases may recur during growth. Severe cases of hypertrophic osteodystrophy can lead to angular limb deformities and may even be fatal. Retained cartilaginous cores can be benign with no evidence of clinical signs and be found incidentally on radiographs. However, if they disrupt the distal ulnar physis,

Forelimb position affects facultative bipedal locomotion in lizards.

Recent work indicates that bipedal posture in lizards is advantageous during obstacle negotiation. However, little is known about how bipedalism occurs beyond a lizard's acceleratory threshold. Furthermore, no study to date has examined the effects of forelimb position on the body center of mass (BCoM) in the context of bipedalism. This study quantified the frequency of bipedalism when sprinting with versus without an obstacle at 0.8 m from the start of a sprint. Forelimb positions were quantified during bipedal running at the start of a sprint and when crossing an obstacle. Two species with c

Interstitiospinal action on forelimb, hindlimb, and back motoneurons.

Responses of motoneurons supplying muscles of the forelimbs, hindlimbs, and back to stimulation of the interstitial nucleus of Cajal (INC) were recorded intracellularly in cats under chloralose anesthesia. Stimulation of the ipsilateral and contralateral INC evoked predominantly excitatory postsynaptic potentials in these motoneurons. Response latencies and properties of responses to multiple shock stimuli indicated that the responses were evoked by a di- or polysynaptic pathway. Stimulation of the anterior MLF (P2), which should have activated the entire interstitiospinal tract, but few retic

Four Unusual Cases of Congenital Forelimb Malformations in Dogs.

Four dogs were presented with thoracic limb deformity. After clinical and radiographic examinations, a diagnosis of congenital malformations was performed for each of them. In one case, a deformity involving both the radial and ulnar side of the distal limb was observed. Based on clinical and radiological evaluations, a diagnosis of postaxial terminal longitudinal ulnar hemimelia was performed. The term ectrodactyly was used to refer different malformations characterized by skin and soft tissue separation of the distal forelimb observed in two dogs. Simple complete uncomplicated syndactyly of

A series of rat segmental forelimb ectopic implantation models.

Temporary ectopic implantation has been performed in clinical practice to salvage devascularized amputated tissues for delayed replantation purpose. In this study, we established a series of segmental forelimb ectopic implantation models in rats, including forelimb, forearm, forepaw, digit, and double forelimbs, to mimic the clinical context. Time of amputated limbs harvesting in donors and ectopic implantation process in recipients were recorded. Survival time and mortalities of recipients were also recorded. Sixty days after ectopic implantation, a full-field laser perfusion imager (FLPI) wa
