The current state of forensic imaging- clinical forensic imaging.

Clinical forensic imaging could be defined as the use of imaging first realised for medical care as evidence for a judicial purpose. It requires both forensic experts and clinical radiologists to have a good understanding of imaging modalities and indications and a solid knowledge of the correct terminology. This second part of the review describes the main situations in which imaging may be used for forensic purposes, i.e. blunt trauma, penetrating injuries, asphyxia, physical abuse and neglect.

Explosion Scene Forensic Image Interpretation.

Image interpretation is an important aspect in the field of forensic science; however, it is seldom reported how to use these techniques in explosion scene forensic investigations. On 12 August 2015, a series of explosions killed 165 people and injured hundreds more at a container storage station at the Port of Tianjin. In this study, we applied image interpretation methods to determine the seat of the explosion by analyzing low-quality video clips of the event. The interpretation fits well with recently published standard operating procedures, including the hypothesis, evaluation, inference,

The Utility of Advanced Imaging in Forensic Anthropology.

Imaging technologies play an integral role in forensic anthropology cases. Advances in digital photography allow the anthropologist to photo-document the scene and skeletal remains in exceptional detail. Traditionally, radiographs have been used to document remains, potential trauma, and any individualizing characteristics such as healing trauma and frontal sinus morphology. Given technological advances, some forensic anthropologists have begun to incorporate more advanced imaging methods in their case analyses and research, such as computed tomography and three-dimensional (3D) surface scans.

Supplementary value of functional imaging in forensic medicine.

AIM: The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of functional imaging for forensic purposes. METHODS: We reviewed a few outpatient cases that were sent to our department for examination after traumatic events and one case with neuropsychic disturbances. RESULTS: Functional imaging showed signs of traumatic lesions in the skeletal system, of brain metabolism and of renal failure. CONCLUSION: Functional disturbances following traumatic events are in some cases more important than morphological abnormalities. Targeted scintigraphic examinations could be applied for visualisation of traumati

Getting in touch--3D printing in forensic imaging.

With the increasing use of medical imaging in forensics, as well as the technological advances in rapid prototyping, we suggest combining these techniques to generate displays of forensic findings. We used computed tomography (CT), CT angiography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and surface scanning with photogrammetry in conjunction with segmentation techniques to generate 3D polygon meshes. Based on these data sets, a 3D printer created colored models of the anatomical structures. Using this technique, we could create models of bone fractures, vessels, cardiac infarctions, ruptured organs a

[The application of X-ray imaging in forensic medicine].

X-ray is the most common, basic and essential imaging method used in forensic medicine. It serves to display and localize the foreign objects in the body and helps to detect various traumatic and pathological changes. X-ray imaging is valuable in anthropological assessment of an individual. X-ray allows non-invasive evaluation of important findings before the autopsy and thus selection of the optimal strategy for dissection. Basic indications for postmortem X-ray imaging in forensic medicine include gunshot and explosive fatalities (identification and localization of projectiles or other compo

The role of forensic imaging in the allegations of torture in asylum seekers.

Nowadays, according to the Istanbul Protocol, diagnostic tests are not an essential part of the clinical assessment of a person alleging torture or ill-treatment. In many cases, a medical history and physical examination are sufficient. However, literature evidence suggests a helpful role of diagnostic imaging in the allegation of evidence of torture, especially in the case of musculoskeletal injuries. The purpose of this narrative review is to highlight the role of imaging tests in suspected torture victims, emphasizing the role of these methods in establishing legal evidence of mistreatment.

Enhancing forensic blood detection using hyperspectral imaging and advanced preprocessing techniques.

Bloodstains are pivotal in forensic investigations as they can provide crucial DNA information about individuals involved in a crime. Traditional methods for bloodstain detection, including chemical tests and forensic lights, have limitations such as non-specificity to human blood and susceptibility to false positives. In forensic blood detection, molecular spectroscopy is crucial for identifying the unique spectral fingerprints of blood, which arise from its molecular composition. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) leverages this principle by capturing a wide spectrum of light for each pixel in an i

Contributions from forensic imaging to the investigation of upper cervical fractures.

Injuries to the upper cervical spine (UCS) are common in traumatic deaths and postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) may contribute to the forensic investigation. This study presents PMCT in comparison with autopsy in the examination of UCS injury. Thirteen consecutive cases with UCS fracture and ⁄ or cranio-cervical dislocation were examined with PMCT and autopsy, and the findings were correlated. Neither of the techniques identified all UCS injuries. Fractures of atlas and axis were best visualized with PMCT whereas cranio-cervical dislocation was better identified during autopsy. Serious inj

The value of micro-CT imaging in the forensic evaluation of neck trauma.

AIM: Forensic examination of the hyoid-larynx complex (HLC) is crucial in diagnosing (inflicted) neck trauma. Clinical Total-Body CT (TBCT) scans of the (non-)calcified HLC lack sensitivity for fracture detection. Micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) is an upcoming imaging modality capable of scanning samples at microscale resolution up to 1 µm. Soft-tissue contrast can be established with iodine staining, known as diffusible iodine-based contrast-enhanced CT (diceCT). We study the additional value of micro- and diceCT in detecting HLC fractures and hemorrhages in forensic cases, compared to s

Role of autopsy imaging in veterinary forensic medicine: experiences in 39 cases.

While numerous scientific studies have suggested the usefulness of autopsy imaging (Ai) in the field of human forensic medicine, the use of imaging modalities for the purpose of veterinary forensics is currently scant. The current study performed Ai on suspicious dead animals requested by the police department to determine their cause of death. Radiography and/or computed tomography and/or magnetic resonance imaging were performed on 39 suspicious dead animals before necropsy. After diagnostic imaging, pathological examination was performed, with drug testing added as needed. Among the 39 case

Prioritising quality: investigating the influence of image quality on forensic facial comparison.

Morphological analysis in forensic facial comparison was recently validated for judicial use. However, no image quality assurance systems exist for this purpose, despite image triage being considered the best practice approach. Hence, this study aimed at testing a semi-quantitative scoring method to assess image quality and investigated facial image resolution and lighting quality quantitatively in a context of forensic facial comparison. For this purpose, 400 facial comparison photographic and CCTV image pools developed from the Wits Face Database were used. These facial images were analysed

The application of imaging technologies in the detection of trace evidence in forensic medical investigation.

In a country notorious for violent crime, it seems that South African medico-legal laboratories make minimal application of technology in the death investigation process and little attention is given to trace evidence. Non-destructive, non-invasive, portable and cost-effective tools are required. This study was conducted at the Pretoria Medico-Legal Laboratory. The surface area of the bodies and clothing of victims of fatal interpersonal violence were examined using a torch, magnifying lamp, portable digital microscope and alternate light source to gauge their potential for trace evidence dete

The use of clinical CCT images in the forensic examination of closed head injuries.

The forensic evaluation of clinical cranial computed tomographies (CCT) frequently is the only reliable source of morphological evidence in head injuries when the injured individual survives or when death is delayed and autopsy findings are characterized by secondary changes. We have reviewed 21 cases where clinical CCT examinations were used to establish a medico-legal diagnosis. In 18 cases falls (n = 13) could be distinguished from blows (n = 5) due to the presence and/or absence of coup and contrecoup lesions and linear or depressed skull fractures. In two cases the striking object could b

Under-reporting of forensic findings: craniocervical emergency imaging in cases of survived hanging.

To determine the diagnostic bias between clinical and forensic radiology in cases of nonfatal hanging and determine and describe typical underreported imaging findings. In a retrospective, single-center study, all patients admitted for attempted suicide with near-hanging or fatal hanging between January 2008 and December 2020 who received CT or MRI of head and neck were reviewed and missed findings in the original report were documented. A binary regression with disagreement as dependent variable was fitted for the imaging modality, fatality, age, and sex. A total of 123 hanging incidents were
