Violence remains a public health challenge and the nursing profession accepts this challenge by expanding its field. Although countries such as the United States, Great Britain, and Canada have employed forensic nurses for decades in different capacities, Germany has yet to follow their lead. This report discusses the German health care and legal systems and challenges Germany to develop an innovative, cost-efficient, and competent profession of forensic nursing.

BACKGROUND: Forensic nursing bridges the health care and legal systems by delivering person-centered, trauma-informed care to survivors of violence while collecting samples that may be used as evidence. Maintaining competence requires ongoing evaluation of clinical and communication skills, especially for those in underserved regions, who face barriers such as isolation, limited resources, and education gaps.
METHOD: A forensic mobile simulation unit was developed to deliver onsite experiential education. Three simulation training sessions were conducted across rural regions, with 2- to 3-day

Sexual abuse can result in significant negative sequelae for victims. One particularly harmful consequence is suicidal ideation, which can lead to suicide attempts and even death. It is essential to screen children and adolescents for suicidal ideation when providing medical forensic care after disclosure of acute or nonacute sexual abuse/assault. Forensic nurses must feel confident in their abilities to assess suicide risk and provide appropriate intervention and referrals. A thorough understanding of the relationship between sexual abuse and suicidal ideation and behaviors can assist the for

Commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) is the sexual abuse of children through buying, selling, or trading their sexual services. This may involve engaging a child under the age of 18 years in prostitution, pornography, stripping, exotic dancing, escort services, or other sexual services. CSEC is a problem of epidemic proportions throughout the world including the United States; however, the actual number of CSEC victims in the United States is unknown. Studies indicate that most child victims are seen by a healthcare provider while being trafficked and that many victims receive car

Nurses practicing in forensic mental health hospital settings work with patients involved in the criminal justice system who are also diagnosed with psychiatric illnesses. Nurses work towards collaborative and therapeutic relationships with patients with an eventual goal of recovery and successful discharge to the community. Though the majority of patients in these settings in Canada are diagnosed with psychotic disorders, a smaller proportion may be diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder (ASPD), a patient population often described as 'difficult' or even 'untreatable' by nurses. AIM: To develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of the Forensic Nursing Competency Scale-Short Form (FNCS-SF) for hospital nurses.
BACKGROUND: Nurses who care for victims of sexual abuse, domestic violence and elder or child abuse require forensic nursing competencies. However, few valid and reliable tools exist to assess these competencies in hospital settings.
DESIGN: A cross-sectional study.
METHODS: The study was conducted in two phases. Phase 1 involved the development and refinement of the FNCS-SF with input from 10 nurses. Phase 2 tested the tool's psychometric properties. A

BACKGROUND: Partners, parents, siblings, children, and other close supports of sexual assault survivors often experience significant emotional, psychological, relational, and physiological consequences following an assault. Although forensic nurses frequently recognize distress among these affected survivor groups, they are rarely incorporated into formal assessment, education, referral, and intervention processes.
AIM: To examine the secondary and tertiary effects of sexual assault within family systems and explore implications for forensic nursing practice.

Child sexual abuse is a problem of epidemic proportions resulting in lifelong physical and mental health consequences for victims. Most child sexual abuse victims never disclose and do not receive needed treatment. Clearly, pediatric healthcare providers must understand the dynamics of child sexual abuse to better identify and protect potential victims. Forensic nurses are at the forefront of caring for victims of sexual abuse and are strong voices in the education of parents, community members, and other healthcare professionals regarding sexual abuse. Forensic nurses with a deeper understand

BACKGROUND: Hostile behaviour is becoming a way of life in South Africa. Hostility prevails at all settings, including in the health sector. In a forensic ward psychiatric nurses are subjected to hostile behaviour by the patients.
AIM: The aim of the present study was to explore and describe the psychiatric nurses' experiences of hostile behaviour by patients in a forensic ward and make recommendations for nurse managers to empower these psychiatric nurses to cope with the patients' aggression.
METHOD: Qualitative, in-depth, phenomenological interviews were conducted with nine psychiatric nu

The use of restrictive interventions to prevent harm remains one of the most persistent challenges in psychiatry. Mechanical restraint (MR), involving belts to limit patient movement, is among the most controversial practices due to their physical and psychological consequences for both patients and staff. MR prevalence varies widely across countries and remains particularly high in forensic mental health settings. In Denmark, MR episodes have increased in recent years despite the implementation of evidence-based interventions, underscoring the need for effective, ethical, and sustainable stra

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to examine the notes produced by nurses, paying specific attention to the style in which these notes are written and observing whether there are concerns of distortions and biases.
BACKGROUND: Clinicians are responsible to document and record accurately. However, nurses' attitudes towards their patients can influence the quality of care they provide their patients and this inevitably impacts their perceptions and judgments, with implications to patients' care, treatment, and recovery. Negative attitudes or bias can cascade to other care providers and professio

Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a pediatric health problem of epidemic proportions. CSA can result in significant lifelong physical and mental health consequences. A disclosure of CSA affects not only the child but also everyone close to the child. Nonoffending caregiver support after a disclosure of CSA is key to optimal victim functioning. Forensic nurses play an integral role in the care of CSA victims and are uniquely positioned to ensure best outcomes for both child victims and their nonoffending caregivers. In this article the concept of nonoffending caregiver support is explored, and = impl

The management of consumer-related risk is paramount in a secure forensic mental health facility. However, the consequent risk aversion presents a major barrier to consumers forming sexual relationships in a manner that is open and accepted. Investigation of the views of nurses working in forensic mental health settings on this topic is limited, and even more so for consumers of services. This qualitative exploratory study was undertaken to elicit the views of consumers and nurses about forming sexual relationships within this long-term and secure setting. Individual in-depth interviews were c

The purpose of this article is to present the results of a study conducted in a Canadian medium-security forensic psychiatric facility. The primary objective of this qualitative research was to describe and comprehend how fear influences nurse-patient interactions in a forensic psychiatric setting. Eighteen semistructured interviews with nurses were used as the primary source of data for analysis. In brief, the results from this research indicate, as other researchers have demonstrated, that within this highly regimented context, nurses are socialized to incorporate representations of the pati

BACKGROUND: Sexual violence is a major public health and medicolegal concern. Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) collaborate with law enforcement, crime laboratory analysts, victim advocates, and prosecutors, creating ethical tensions between survivor-centered care and forensic obligations, with trauma-informed, patient-centered care as the primary clinical commitment.
AIM: To provide an ethical analysis structured around the four biomedical principles, autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice, to guide clinical decision-making in sexual assault care.
METHODS: A narrative revi
