Forensic molecular pathology of violent deaths.

In forensic pathology, while classical morphology remains a core procedure to investigate deaths, a spectrum of ancillary procedures has been developed and incorporated to detail the pathology. Among them, postmortem biochemistry is important to investigate the systemic pathophysiological changes involved in the dying process that cannot be detected by morphology. In addition, recent advances in molecular biology have provided a procedure to investigate genetic bases of diseases that might present with sudden death, which is called 'molecular autopsy'. Meanwhile, the practical application of R

Molecular pathology in forensic medicine--Introduction.

Techniques of molecular biology have improved diagnostic sensitivity, accuracy and validity in forensic medicine very much, especially in the field of identification (paternity testing, stain analysis). Since more than 10 years these techniques - meanwhile well established in clinical disciplines - are used also for other applications in forensic medicine: determination of cause and manner of death, tissue identification by mRNA and microRNA, examination of gene expression levels (survival time, time since death, cause of death), toxicogenetics.

An unusual pedestrian road trauma: from forensic pathology to forensic veterinary medicine.

Traffic accidents have increased in the last decade, pedestrians being the most affected group. At autopsy, it is evident that the most common cause of pedestrian death is central nervous system injury, followed by skull base fractures, internal bleeding, lower limb haemorrhage, skull vault fractures, cervical spinal cord injury and airway compromise. The attribution of accident responsibility can be realised through reconstruction of road accident dynamics, investigation of the scene, survey of the vehicle involved and examination of the victim(s). A case study concerning a car accident where

Blunt Force Trauma in Veterinary Forensic Pathology.

Veterinary pathologists commonly encounter lesions of blunt trauma. The development of lesions is affected by the object's mass, velocity, size, shape, and angle of impact and by the plasticity and mobility of the impacted organ. Scrape, impact, and pattern abrasions cause localized epidermal loss and sometimes broken hairs and implanted foreign material. Contusions are best identified after reflecting the skin, and must be differentiated from coagulopathies and livor mortis. Lacerations-traumatic tissue tears-may have irregular margins, bridging by more resilient tissue, deviation of the woun

Cardiac pathology in 2007 consecutive forensic autopsies.

The incidence of various types of cardiovascular disease was evaluated in 2007 consecutive forensic patients. Cardiovascular deaths accounted for 22.8% of the study patients and atherosclerotic coronary heart disease was the most common type of cardiac disease (18%). Among subjects dying of atherosclerotic coronary disease, sudden death was three times more frequent than acute myocardial infarction. Expected cardiac findings included the incidence of severe coronary atherosclerosis (21%), floppy mitral valves (5%), and congenital bicuspid aortic valves (1%). Major cardiac findings occurred in

Introduction to the forensic pathology of cocaine.

During the last several years, a clearer understanding of cocaine's effects on the body has emerged. Metabolism and tissue distribution are better understood. A diverse group of cocaine-related illnesses have been reported, but many appear to share the underlying mechanism of catecholamine toxicity. Knowledge of cocaine's metabolism makes possible certain conclusions about route of ingestion, time of use, and patterns of abuse in general. Knowledge of the histologic alterations known to be associated with cocaine use can pinpoint cocaine as the cause of death, even in cases where there are neg

Cardiac pathology in 470 consecutive forensic autopsies.

Cardiovascular disease continues to be the single most common generic cause of sudden and unexpected deaths. Atherosclerotic coronary heart disease and acute myocardial infarction are the most prevalent forms of fatal cardiac disease observed at autopsy. Other cardiac lesions are frequently listed as causes of death, but the prevalence of such lesions as incidental findings in the general population is unknown. In this study, 470 consecutive forensic autopsies were evaluated for minor and major anomalies. The most frequently observed major congenital finding was floppy mitral valve (5%). Tunne

Cerebellar pathology in forensic and clinical neuroscience.

Recent research underscores the cerebellum's growing importance in forensic science and neurology, showing its functions extend beyond motor control, especially in identifying causes of death. Critical neuropathological markers including alpha-synuclein and tau protein aggregates, cellular degeneration, inflammation, and vascular changes are vital for identifying neurodegenerative diseases, injuries, and toxic exposures. Advanced forensic methods, such as Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), immunohistochemistry, and molecular analysis, have greatly improved the accuracy of diagnoses. Promising n

Veterinary Forensic Pathology: The Search for Truth.

Veterinary forensic pathology is emerging as a distinct discipline, and this special issue is a major step forward in establishing the scientific basis of the discipline. A forensic necropsy uses the same skill set needed for investigations of natural disease, but the analytical framework and purpose of forensic pathology differ significantly. The requirement of legal credibility and all that it entails distinguishes the forensic from routine diagnostic cases. Despite the extraordinary depth and breadth of knowledge afforded by their training, almost 75% of veterinary pathologists report that

Veterinary Forensic Pathology of Animal Sexual Abuse.

Animal sexual abuse (ASA) involves harm inflicted on animals for the purposes of human sexual gratification and includes such terms as bestiality, zoophilia, zoosadism, animal sexual assault, and others. The prevalence of ASA is not known, although it may be more common than is currently perceived. Veterinarians have the skills required to identify and document cases of ASA. This article reviews the terminology, legal definitions and forms of ASA, and its social and psychological context. An investigative approach is outlined, including an alternate light source examination; collection of swab

Forensic Veterinary Pathology: Sharp Injuries in Animals.

Sharp-force injuries are injuries caused by a mechanical force using sharp objects against the skin. Sharp-force injuries are mainly classified as stab, incised, chop, and therapeutic wounds and are less frequent than blunt-force injuries in animals. The analysis of the edges of the wound is crucial, especially if more than one type of lesion is involved. It may be difficult to differentiate between sharp trauma and blunt trauma, because lacerations can resemble incised wounds. The accurate documentation and examination of these injuries may indicate the instrument involved, the relationship b

Forensic pathology and the miscarriage of justice.

A case of conviction for rape-murder that was eventually overturned based on a post-conviction re-evaluation of the findings at autopsy is described. The main issue elucidated on post-conviction review was that postmortem anal dilation and postmortem hypostatic hemorrhages of the neck were misinterpreted as injuries. After review of the autopsy findings, the prosecution agreed with the appellant that a miscarriage of justice had occurred and the conviction was quashed by an appellate court. This case underscores the need for an awareness of key pitfalls that can be encountered at autopsy, such

Pathological gambling: forensic issues.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to review the literature describing the hypothesised link between crime and pathological gambling and its relevance to arguments of diminished responsibility. METHOD: An attempt was made to include all publications in the psychiatry and psychology literature which made reference to pathological gambling and criminal behaviours. Given the limited research in this field, specific unpublished conference papers were also included in the review. RESULTS: Evidence supports the contention that pathological gamblers are at high risk for committing criminal offence

The use of kidney biomechanics in forensic pathology.

Forensic tissue mechanics has emerged as a promising complementary approach for post-mortem interval (PMI) estimation, particularly for intermediate and later post-mortem phases where temperature-based methods become unreliable. However, human kidney tissue has not yet been systematically investigated within this framework. This study aimed to characterize the rheological properties of human kidney tissue under standardized post-mortem conditions and assess their relationship with PMI and potential confounding factors. Kidney samples from 49 cadavers (36 male, 13 female; mean age 65 ± 16 years

The use of spleen biomechanics in forensic pathology.

Forensic tissue mechanics applies biomechanical analyses of human tissues to support forensic investigations, including time since death estimation. Unlike temperature-based methods such as the Henssge nomogram, which are limited once thermal equilibrium is reached, rheological tissue analyses remain applicable at extended post-mortem intervals (PMIs). While previous studies have demonstrated the utility of human brain and liver tissue mechanics, the forensic relevance of splenic biomechanics has not yet been systematically explored. In this study, rheological properties of post-mortem human s

The use of brain biomechanics in forensic pathology.

Recent studies on sheep brains have demonstrated the potential of biomechanical analysis in estimating time since death. This study extends the research to human tissue to assess practical forensic applicability. Brain samples from six regions of 47 cadavers were analyzed for storage (G'), loss (G''), and complex shear moduli (G*), and these properties were correlated with post-mortem interval (PMI), age at death, sex, edema, autolysis, blood congestion, and white-to-gray matter ratio. Significant regional differences were found: the anterior deep brain had significantly lower G' (1621 ± 599 P

The use of liver biomechanics in forensic pathology.

Stiffness and plasticity of human tissues are routinely assessed during forensic autopsy and have recently been identified as a promising metric for estimating time since death in animal models. In this study, the biomechanical state of the human liver is investigated concerning pathology, age at death, sex, liver weight, autolysis, and blood congestion. Additionally, its use for biomechanical time since death estimation is evaluated. The storage, loss, and complex shear moduli of 54 human liver parenchyma samples collected during routine forensic autopsies, were determined using a rheometer.
