[Occupational diseases in forestry workers].

Inquiries and medical examinations provided a considerable amount of informations on the state of health of forest workers in Switzerland. A large number of forest workers suffers from back troubles (55%) and other health problems concerning the muscular-skeletal system. These are obvious reasons for giving up forestry work before reaching the retiring age limit. Complaints about overfatigue and overall body degeneration are frequent and point to the necessity of further investigations. Vibration induced "White Fingers" are frequent amount forest workers (46%). They are closely related to tota

[Causes of accidents in Swiss forestry].

In Swiss public forests about 3600 work accidents occur yearly. These accident rates are higher than in any other branch of industry in Switzerland. Statistical evaluation and investigation of near accidents established great risks for power saw work. The results show that the accident causes are lack of concentration, time pressure, bad weather and general fatigue.

Lyme borreliosis in Dutch forestry workers.

Serum samples from 127 Dutch forestry workers and 127 matched controls were tested for antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi in an indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA). Those of the forestry workers were also tested by Western blotting. The forestry workers were examined clinically for evidence of Lyme borreliosis without the examiner or the workers knowing the results of the laboratory tests. Seroprevalence of B. burgdorferi antibodies among forestry workers (25/127) was significantly higher than among controls matched for age and place of residence (8/127), odds ratio 3.7 (95% CI 1.5-9.

Accidents in family forestry's firewood production.

Firewood is commonly used around the world, but little is known about the work involved in its production and associated accidents. The objectives were to identify relationships between accidents and time exposure, workers' age and sex, equipment used and work activities in family forestry's firewood production. Data from a postal survey in Northern Sweden were compared to a database of injuries in the same region. Most accidents occurred to 50-69 year old men, who also worked most hours. No significant differences in sex and age were found between expected and recorded accident frequencies wh

Raynaud's phenomenon in forestry workers in Quebec.

A survey of 1540 forestry workers in Quebec found a prevalence of Raynaud's phenomenon of 30.5% among chain-saw users and 8.7% among nonusers. Prevalence was related directly to duration of use of the chain-saw. The mean interval (+/- the standard deviation) between the time the chain-saw was first used and the onset of Raynaud's phenomenon was 7.8 +/- 5.6 years. After 20 years of chain-saw use over 50% of the population had Raynaud's phenomenon. Relative risks among those using a chain-saw for more than 10 years were 3.60 for nonsmokers and 6.55 for smokers. Other factors associated with the

[Diseases of the locomotor system in forestry workers].

The most common hazards in the forestry that may induce disorders of the musculoskeletal system are vibrations, unfavorable microclimatic conditions, noise, over-time working hours, work load and long-term repeated movements. The objective of this study was to analyze the prevalence of musculoskeletal diseases and its difference among workers engaged in various jobs in the forestry. Two groups of workers were selected: woodcutters operating with chain-saw (N=33) and other loggers (N=32). Selected workers were of the similar age and had similar total length of employment as well as the length o

Forestry workers exposed to vibration: a neurological study.

Neurological findings were examined in 186 forestry workers with a mean exposure to chain saw vibration of 16.6 hours. The prevalence of active vibration induced white fingers was 5%, parethaesias of the hands 53%, and muscle weakness 13%. Clinical polyneuropathy was observed in 16 forestry workers in the hands (7.5%) which did not correlate with alcohol consumption. Seventy nine forestry workers of the total population were selected for electromyographic examination. Generalised EMG based polyneuropathy in the hands was observed in only two of the 79 forestry workers (2.5%). The carpal tunnel

Hand-arm vibration in tropical rain forestry workers.

Working conditions and health hazards including vibration syndrome related to forestry work using chain-saws were studied in Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. The subjects comprised 291 workers including 97 chain-saw operators. The health examination consisted of peripheral circulatory and sensory tests in the upper extremities. The vibration spectrum measured at the handle of the chain-saw indicated that these acceleration levels would lead to a moderately high risk of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). The peripheral circulatory function tests revealed dysfunction after more than five years v

Pivoting forestry and agricultural concessions toward conservation in Southeast Asia.

Expansion of forestry and agriculture in Southeast Asia has driven widespread deforestation, biodiversity loss and carbon emissions. Yet large areas of natural forest remain within concessions, representing overlooked opportunities for conservation and climate mitigation. We identify 42 Mha of natural tropical moist forest within 3,754 logging, oil palm, planted wood and rubber concessions across Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia and Myanmar. Clearing these forests could threaten 4.6 Mha of Key Biodiversity Areas and release ~1,216 Mt CO2 over 30 years. We assess the economic viability of conservi

A Review of Forensic Investigation of Fatal Forestry Operations-Related Deaths.

Despite advances in mechanization, ergonomic design, and safety regulation, forest operations continue to involve a complex synergy of mechanical, organizational, environmental, and operator risk factors. This review describes the 5 main categories of forestry accidents, such as chainsaw kickback, misdirected tree-fall, environmental, vehicles and machinery accidents, and operator falls from height, and highlights the main diagnostic evaluations that need to be performed in order to confirm a correct reconstruction of forestry fatalities. Forensic investigations into deaths due to forestry acc
