Engaging Dispositional Forgiveness: A Structure for Consistent Forgiveness Praxis.

Although forgiveness is hard work, it enables individuals who have gone through unfairness and harm outgrow the pain of resentment and hostility to a condition of wellness and health. Still, it is possible that authentic forgiveness, regardless of significant violations may, as a matter of choice occur when the injured have hitherto achieved proficiency with the forgiveness praxis by practicing consistently. This manuscript suggests a brief dispositional forgiveness praxis that permits individuals to achieve experience in forgiving trivial faults on a consistent basis. Even though other forgiv

What it takes to forgive: When and why executive functioning facilitates forgiveness.

To establish what it takes to forgive, the present research focused on the cognitive underpinnings of the forgiveness process. We conducted four studies that examined and supported the prediction that executive functioning (a set of cognitive control processes) facilitates forgiveness. First, a correlational study revealed a positive relation between executive functioning and dispositional forgiveness (Study 1). Second, a longitudinal study demonstrated that executive functioning predicts the development of forgiveness over a period of 5 weeks after the offense (Study 2). Finally, two experime

Having the power to forgive: when the experience of power increases interpersonal forgiveness.

The present research examined the association between power, defined in terms of experienced control over outcomes and resources in a relationship, and interpersonal forgiveness. Based on recent findings in the literature suggesting that power is associated with goal directedness, it was hypothesized that high levels of experienced power should facilitate forgiveness, in particular in relationships of strong commitment. The results of three studies, using both correlational and experimental designs, supported this prediction: Power was positively associated with forgiveness, but this effect wa

Measuring Dispositional Forgiveness: A Reliability Generalization Meta-Analysis on the Heartland Forgiveness Scale.

This study aimed to evaluate the generalizability of Cronbach's alpha coefficients for the Heartland Forgiveness Scale (HFS) and its subscales across different continents, countries, languages, and samples. Additionally, the effects of age and gender on reliability were examined through meta-regression. A systematic review conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guideline and REGEMA checklist identified 165 studies reporting alpha coefficients for the HFS or its subscales. Meta-ANOVA was used to assess variability across contexts, while meta-regression examined age and gender as moderators. Av

Measuring offence-specific forgiveness in marriage: the Marital Offence-Specific Forgiveness Scale (MOFS).

Three studies involving 328 married couples were conducted to validate the Marital Offence-Specific Forgiveness Scale, a new measure assessing offence-specific forgiveness for marital transgressions. The studies examined the dimensionality; internal consistency; and discriminant, concurrent, and predictive validity of the new measure. The final scale comprised 2 distinct correlated dimensions, 1 positive (Benevolence) and 1 negative (Resentment-Avoidance), both of which had adequate internal consistency. The 2 dimensions discriminated marital forgiveness from affective empathy, rumination, att

The problem with self-forgiveness: forgiving the self deters readiness to change among gamblers.

Self-forgiveness is generally understood to be a mechanism that restores and improves the self. In the current study, we examine the possible deleterious consequences of forgiving the self among gamblers-specifically in regard to gamblers' readiness to change their problematic behavior. At a large Canadian university, 110 young adult gamblers' level of gambling pathology was assessed, along with their readiness to change and self-forgiveness for their gambling. Participants were 33 females and 75 males (2 unspecified) with a mean age of 20.33. Results revealed that level of pathology (at risk

Forgiveness, retaliation and paranoid reactions.

It has been suggested that clinical states from grudgingness and habitual bitterness through to delusions of persecution are best resolved by forgiving. The process of forgiving requires that previously unacknowledged impulses, particularly aggressive ones, are accepted in oneself and others. If the therapist is aware of this, he can, in the transference, reinforce the patient's good introjects by providing a non-judgemental, acceptant model for the patient and thereby facilitate the adoption of the forgiving attitude. Sometimes habitual forgiving can occur as a reaction formation, and should

Forgiving and Not Forgiving as Processes of Sense-Making Among Victims/Survivors of Domestic and Sexual Abuse.

Most research into forgiveness in the contexts of domestic and sexual abuse involves quantitative studies of the benefits or risks of forgiveness for victims/survivors. This paradigm constructs forgiveness as an achieved event, largely overlooking victims/survivors' forgiveness experiences. Furthermore, existing research scarcely addresses not forgiving among victims/survivors. This article shows both forgiving and not forgiving are utilized in processes of sense-making by victims/survivors. We argue that forgiving and not forgiving in this context should be understood not simply as an achieve

Is mindfulness associated with interpersonal forgiveness?

Using a multimethod approach, the current research tested the basic prediction that mindfulness is associated with interpersonal forgiveness. Across 5 studies, we found that mindfulness meditation, trait mindfulness, and an experimental induction of mindfulness, were positively associated with indicators of both dispositional forgiving tendencies, state levels of forgiveness regarding a past offense, and levels of perceived forgiving tendencies as rated by the romantic partner. Two studies examined the roles of perspective taking and rumination as potential mechanisms; results provided most co

Forgiveness in psychotherapy: the key to healing.

The process of forgiveness in psychotherapy involves both letting go of resentment toward the offender and replacing the resentment with mindful awareness and empathy. By reconceptualizing past transgressions with a kinder, more equivocal outlook, clients attain a shift in perspective that is spiritual and cognitive in nature, thereby reducing symptomology and enhancing their quality of life. Such insights bring clients toward their inner Buddha nature, which transcends the suffering associated with clinging to past hurts and resentment. This process is facilitated by techniques such as concen

Is it Genuine or Pseudo-Forgiveness? Offenders' Appraisals of Victims' Expressed Forgiveness as a Function of Engagement in Co-Reflection.

After interpersonal wrongdoing, a victim may express forgiveness with or without having truly experienced a transformation to more positive sentiments toward the offender. As those forgiving sentiments are internal states, offenders do not know, and would need to make inferences, whether the forgiveness is genuine or pseudo-forgiveness. Two studies, an experiment using vignettes (N = 308) and a correlational study using a recalled wrongdoing (N = 179), provided evidence that, to the extent that the forgiveness was preceded by a reflective dialogue with the victim (i.e., co-reflection), offende

"To Err is Human, to Forgive, Divine": Religious Doubt, Psychological Well-Being and the Moderating Role of Divine Forgiveness.

A significant amount of research to date has been done to study the effects of forgiveness on mental health and well-being, but less research has been conducted on divine forgiveness. The main purpose of the current study is to examine the possible moderating role of divine forgiveness. Drawing on a nationally representative sample of 1,500 older adults, regression results suggest that greater divine forgiveness exacerbated the relationship between high religious doubt and greater depressive symptoms and lower life satisfaction. We did not document similar moderation patterns between religious

Forgiveness in Poland: Rye Forgiveness Scale Adaptation and Its Longitudinal Impact on Mental Health in HIV-Positive Individuals.

Within psychological research, the concept of forgiveness has gained recognition for its potential impact on health, underlining the need for culturally adapted assessment tools and longitudinal studies to substantiate its effects. In this two-phase research project, we initially adapted the Rye Forgiveness Scale (RFS) to measure state forgiveness in the Polish context with 740 participants. Reliability analysis and confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the RFS's structure and internal consistency (absence of negative α = 0.87, presence of positive α = 0.86, full scale α = 0.84). Forgiveness as a mediator of the intergenerational transmission of violence.

Bowen Family Systems Theory and Social Learning Theory served as a framework for examining the potential role of offspring maternal forgiveness in the intergenerational transmission (IGT) of violence. Using 285 emerging adults, we tested the hypotheses that higher accounts of witnessed interpersonal violence perpetrated by either parent would relate to increased reports of dating violence, and that offspring's capacity to forgive mothers for current transgressions would mediate this relationship. Witnessing interpersonal violence perpetrated by either parent significantly related to offspring

Dispositional forgiveness of self, others, and situations.

Six studies regarding forgiveness are presented. The Heartland Forgiveness Scale (HFS), a self-report measure of dispositional forgiveness (with subscales to assess forgiveness of self, others, and situations) was developed and demonstrated good psychometric properties. Forgiveness correlated positively with cognitive flexibility, positive affect, and distraction; it correlated negatively with rumination, vengeance, and hostility. Forgiveness predicted four components of psychological well-being (anger, anxiety, depression, and satisfaction with life); forgiveness of situations accounted for u

B/F/TAF forgiveness to non-adherence.

: Background : ART forgiveness is the ability of a regimen to maintain HIV-RNA suppression despite a documented imperfect adherence. We explored forgiveness of bictegravir/emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide (B/F/TAF). : Methods : In this retrospective cohort study pharmacy drug refills were used to calculate the proportion of days covered (PDC) as a proxy of adherence. Forgiveness was defined as the possibility to achieve a selected HIV-RNA threshold by a given level of imperfect adherence. A logistic model was applied to verify the impact of baseline variables and adherence on the virologic

Connectome-based predictive modeling of trait forgiveness.

Forgiveness is a positive, prosocial manner of reacting to transgressions and is strongly associated with mental health and well-being. Despite recent studies exploring the neural mechanisms underlying forgiveness, a model capable of predicting trait forgiveness at the individual level has not been developed. Herein, we applied a machine-learning approach, connectome-based predictive modeling (CPM), with whole-brain resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) to predict individual differences in trait forgiveness in a training set (dataset 1, N = 100, 35 men, 17-24 years). As a result, CPM su
