Development of three-dimensional form perception.

In three experiments with infants and one with adults we explored the generality, limitations, and informational bases of early form perception. In the infant studies we used a habituation-of-looking-time procedure and the method of Kellman (1984), in which responses to three-dimensional (3-D) form were isolated by habituating 16-week-old subjects to a single object in two different axes of rotation in depth, and testing afterward for dishabituation to the same object and to a different object in a novel axis of rotation. In Experiment 1, continuous optical transformations given by moving 16-w

Preserved implicit form perception and orientation adaptation in visual form agnosia.

Visual form agnosia is mainly characterized by profound deficits in visual form and shape discrimination. Previous studies have shown that patients retain the capacity for coordinated motor behaviors, color naming and implicit letter perception. However, it is unknown to what extent other visual functions, such as implicit form and orientation perception, are preserved. To address these questions, we investigated a single visual form agnosic patient, X.F., in two distinct experiments. X.F.'s visual lesions were mainly localized in the bilateral occipitotemporal cortex, with the dorsal visual s

Motion-Defined Form Perception in Deprivation Amblyopia.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess motion-defined form perception, including the association with clinical and sensory factors that may drive performance, in each eye of children with deprivation amblyopia due to unilateral cataract. METHODS: Coherence thresholds for orientation discrimination of motion-defined form were measured using a staircase procedure in 30 children with deprivation amblyopia and 59 age-matched controls. Visual acuity, stereoacuity, fusion, and interocular suppression were also measured. Fixation stability and fellow-eye global motion thresholds were measu

Perception and action in 'visual form agnosia'.

A single case study of a patient with 'visual form agnosia' is presented. A severe visual recognition deficit was accompanied by impairments in discriminating shape, reflectance, and orientation, although visual acuity and colour vision, along with tactile recognition and intelligence, were largely preserved. Neuropsychological and behavioural investigations have indicated that the patient is able to utilize visual pattern information surprisingly well for the control of hand movements during reaching, and can even read many whole words, despite being unable to make simple discriminative judge

Enhanced Fine-Form Perception Does Not Contribute to Gestalt Face Perception in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) show superior performance in processing fine detail, but often exhibit impaired gestalt face perception. The ventral visual stream from the primary visual cortex (V1) to the fusiform gyrus (V4) plays an important role in form (including faces) and color perception. The aim of this study was to investigate how the ventral stream is functionally altered in ASD. Visual evoked potentials were recorded in high-functioning ASD adults (n = 14) and typically developing (TD) adults (n = 14). We used three types of visual stimuli as follows: isoluminant ch

Deficits in Motion and Form Perception in Infantile Nystagmus Syndrome.

PURPOSE: Visual deficits in infantile nystagmus syndrome (INS) could be a result of retinal blur from excessive eye movements and/or cortical changes from visual deprivation. We measured global motion and form sensitivity in INS to compare deficits between motion and form perception and to decipher the role of internal noise (local deficit such as eye movement) and sampling efficiency (global cortical deficit). METHODS: A total of 30 participants (14.40 ± 4.83 years) with INS and 30 age-matched controls discriminated the direction of motion and orientation of physically equivalent translation

Exaggerated color perception in a patient with visual form agnosia.

Previous studies on visual form agnosic patients have shown that their color perception is relatively preserved when monochromatic figures are used. However, it is unclear whether their color perception remains normal when figures are composed of two parts in different colors. The results showed that patient X.F. had difficulty in naming both colors when the two colors were placed next to each other, and in discriminating the two-color figure from the figure presented in its larger color. In contrast, X.F. could name the two colors when they were physically separated. These data suggest that X

Men's perception of premenstrual changes on the premenstrual assessment form.

Outcome research has shown that partner-spouse support can enhance the therapeutic outcome in a number of clinical problems. In the area of premenstrual tension, studies of treatment have apparently overlooked this issue of partners' support. This study was designed to address how men perceive premenstrual changes. 99 undergraduate men were asked whether they believed that women had premenstrual changes reflected on the 18 unipolar scales of the Premenstrual Assessment Form. Responses suggest that young men acknowledge that some women experience dysphoric features like hostility, mood swings,

Form, Function, Perception, and Reception: Visual Bioethics and the Artificial Womb.

Artificial wombs are already in development that have the potential to radically alter how we perceive the developing fetus and the role of pregnancy in society. That this technology would allow greater visibility of gestation than ever before also highlights the risk that artificial wombs will be used to further restrict women's reproductive liberty and access to abortion. This article uses Paul Lauritzen's theory of "visual bioethics" to explore the ethical significance of images of the developing fetus and how artificial wombs might best be visually designed and integrated into society.

Dynamic visual speech perception in a patient with visual form agnosia.

To examine the role of dynamic cues in visual speech perception, a patient with visual form agnosia (DF) was tested with a set of static and dynamic visual displays of three vowels. Five conditions were tested: (1) auditory only which provided only vocal pitch information, (2) dynamic visual only, (3) dynamic audiovisual with vocal pitch information, (4) dynamic audiovisual with full voice information and (5) static visual only images of postures during vowel production. DF showed normal performance in all conditions except the static visual only condition in which she scored at chance. Contro

Spatiotemporal integration and object perception in infancy: perceiving unity versus form.

3 experiments investigated 5-month-old infants' perception of an object whose center was fully occluded and whose ends were visible only in succession. Infants perceived this object as one connected whole when the ends of the object underwent a common motion behind the occluder, but not when the ends were stationary. Although infants perceived the connectedness of the object, they did not appear to perceive the object's shape. These findings suggest (a) that young infants are capable of integrating information over time to perceive object unity but not object form, (b) that young infants perce

Motion Perception and Form Discrimination in Extremely Preterm School-Aged Children.

This population-based study evaluated motion and form perception in 71 children born extreme premature (EPT; < 27 gestational weeks), aged 6.5 years, as compared to a matched group of 79 control children born at term. Motion and form perception were evaluated by motion coherence and form coherence tests. The EPT group showed a poorer performance on both tasks as compared to the control group. However, after controlling for IQ and visual acuity, the EPT group showed only a significant deficit in motion perception. No association was found between motion perception accuracy and gestational age,

Distinct mechanisms of form-from-motion perception in human extrastriate cortex.

The exquisite sensitivity of the human visual system to form-from-motion (FfM) cues is well documented. However, identifying the neural correlates of this sensitivity has proven difficult, particularly determining the respective contributions of different motion areas in extrastriate visual cortex. Here we measured visual FfM perception and more elementary visual motion (VM) perception in a group of 32 patients suffering from acute posterior brain damage, and performed MRI-based lesion analysis. Our results suggest that severe FfM perception deficits without an associated deficit of VM percept

PET reveals occipitotemporal pathway activation during elementary form perception in humans.

To define brain regions involved in feature extraction or elementary form perception, regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was measured using positron emission tomography (PET) in subjects viewing two classes of achromatic textures. Textures composed of local features (e.g. extended contours and rectangular blocks) produced activation or increased rCBF along the occipitotemporal pathway relative to textures with the same mean luminance, contrast, and spatial-frequency content but lacking organized form elements or local features. Significant activation was observed in striate, extrastriate, lin

The perception of spatial relations in a patient with visual form agnosia.

It is generally believed that neuropsychological patients presenting with visual agnosia, a deficit on object perception/recognition, have suffered damage to the ventral visual cortical pathway (Milner & Goodale, 1995). Rarely has the ability of such patients to perceive the spatial location of objects been investigated-perhaps because "spatial vision" is thought by some researchers to be mediated exclusively by the dorsal visual cortical pathway. Here we present data on spatial perception in a patient DF, who has a profound visual form agnosia. DF and two control subjects were required to mak

Cortical activations for symmetry effect on visual word form perception in developmental dyslexia.

The ability to generalize across symmetric views is an essential feature of the human visual system. Poor readers often make mirror errors and struggle to distinguish between symmetrical letters, such as "b" and "d". Unlearning the mirror generalization is therefore crucial for developing proficient reading skills. Here we investigated the effect of symmetry on visual word form perception in developmental dyslexic (DD) and chronological age (CA)-matched typical juveniles. We employed real-, non-, jiagu- (precursors of modern Hanzi), and scrambled characters in Hanzi with symmetric or asymmetri

Spatial configuration processing in visual word form perception and reading abilities in Chinese.

The analysis of spatial relations among components of a character is important in identifying visual word forms. We investigated such spatial configuration processing for Chinese characters in dyslexic children (aged 9-12 years) and two groups of typically developing children, matched according to chronological age or reading level. In this study, we used real characters and noncharacters to manipulate the spatial configuration between character components while preserving their local features. Both characters were displayed either in an upright or inverted position. Participants were asked to
