Microholes of the fovea centralis.

Foveal microholes are a possible cause of unilateral or bilateral small central visual defects in the absence of other macular pathology. In 18 eyes of 17 patients we noted the following features: small, dark-reddish holes in the centre of the fovea ranging from 50 to 150 micron in size; normal adjacent retinal pigment epithelium and neuroepithelium; unilateral in most cases; males and females are equally affected; mean age 40 years; insidious onset; no history of direct eye trauma or sungazing; non-progressive; relatively favourable visual outcome; no relationship with regular macular holes;

Nitrergic nerve cells in the primate ciliary muscle are only present in species with a fovea centralis.

Nerve cells positive for NADPH diaphorase (D)/nitric oxide synthase in the human ciliary muscle appear to be involved in relaxation of the muscle during disaccommodation. To study whether similar cells might mediate disaccommodation of the primate ciliary muscle in general, serial sections of the ciliary muscle of 5 cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) and 2 owl monkeys (Aotes trivirgatus) were stained for NADPH-D. Both monkey species have a ciliary muscle system and an accommodative amplitude comparable to that in humans. Positively stained cells were frequently observed in the ciliary mu

Thickness analysis of the retinal nerve fiber layer, macula, and choroid in children born preterm stratified by birth weight.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether birth weight influences retinal development in children born preterm, we analyzed the thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), fovea centralis, and choroid. METHODS: Participants born preterm were categorized as extremely low birth weight (ELBW, <1000 g), very low birth weight (VLBW, 1000-1500 g), and low birth weight (LBW, 1500-2500 g). RNFL thickness, fovea centralis thickness (macular center), and subfoveal choroidal thickness were measured using optical coherence tomography. Linear regression was used to evaluate associations between OCT parameter

Synchronization of visual perception within the human fovea.

The human brain constructs a model of the world by processing sensory signals with distinct temporal characteristics that may differ in generation and transmission speed within a single sensory modality. To perceive simultaneous events as occurring at the same time, the brain must synchronize this sensory information, yet the mechanisms underlying such synchronization remain unclear. By combining human neural recordings, behavioral measurements and modeling, we show that in the human visual system, this process begins in the fovea centralis, the retinal region used for reading and recognizing

Robust Fovea Detection in Retinal OCT Imaging Using Deep Learning.

The fovea centralis is an essential landmark in the retina where the photoreceptor layer is entirely composed of cones responsible for sharp, central vision. The localization of this anatomical landmark in optical coherence tomography (OCT) volumes is important for assessing visual function correlates and treatment guidance in macular disease. In this study, the "PRE U-net" is introduced as a novel approach for a fully automated fovea centralis detection, addressing the localization as a pixel-wise regression task. 2D B-scans are sampled from each image volume and are concatenated with spatial

Efficiency comparison with fovea-sparing internal limiting membrane peeling and complete internal limiting membrane peeling for treating myopic traction maculopathy.

PURPOSE: To explore whether the efficacy of fovea-sparing internal limiting membrane peeling (FS-ILMP) is better than that of complete internal limiting membrane peeling (ILMP). METHODS: This retrospective clinical study included 34 cases (34 eyes) with myopic traction maculopathy collected from June 2017 to February 2019. Twenty-three-gauge (23-G) pars plana vitrectomy (23G PPV) was performed on all patients. In the FS-ILMP group, 18 eyes retained the internal limiting membrane (ILM) of about 1 to 1.5 papillary diameter centered on fovea centralis, while in the standard ILMP group, the ILM w

The human fovea.

While the fovea occupies only about 0.1% of the total retinal surface area, it is arguably the most important region of the human retina. The human fovea is characterized by unique anatomic specializations relative to the rest of the retina, which include an absence of inner retinal layers and the accompanying vasculature, an increased density of cone photoreceptors, a near-absence of rod photoreceptors, and a unique "private-line" midget ganglion cell circuitry. These anatomic specializations are responsible for our high-acuity vision. Unfortunately, as a result, even minor disruptions to fov

Eye Morphology, Foveal Structure and Photoreceptor Composition in Both Foveae of Common Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus Linnaeus, 1758).

Vision is considered the most important of the five primary senses in birds, particularly in raptors, and the relatively large size of the avian eye reflects its importance. This study provides a morphological and histomorphometric characterisation of the eye and retina of the Common Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus), a diurnal raptor with bifoveate retinal organisation. Two adult Common Kestrels, obtained through a wildlife rehabilitation programme, were examined. Eye morphology was characterised using the ratio between corneal diameter and transverse eye diameter, while retinal morphology and laye

Histological analysis of retinal development and remodeling in the brown anole lizard (Anolis sagrei).

The fovea, a pit in the retina, is crucial for high-acuity vision in humans and is found in the eyes of other vertebrates, including certain primates, birds, lizards, and fish. Despite its importance for vision, our understanding of the mechanisms involved in fovea development remains limited. Widely used ocular research models lack a foveated retina, and studies on fovea development are mostly limited to histological and molecular studies in primates. As a first step toward elucidating fovea development in nonprimate vertebrates, we present a detailed histological atlas of retina and fovea de

[Review on the etiology of focal photoreceptor defects].

Focal photoreceptor defects refer to a group of diseases characterized by changes in the foveal structure caused by rarefaction or absence of the outer retina. Due to their diverse clinical manifestations and the limitations of previous imaging techniques, these diseases have not received sufficient attention and accurate diagnosis. Their causes can be mainly classified into diseases with primary lesions occurring in the outer retina and outer retinal lesions secondary to other sites of disease. Understanding the potential causes of foveal photoreceptor damage can provide better guidance for t

Foveal Hypoplasia in a Child With Tyrosinase-Positive Albinism.

The purpose of this article is to report a case of bilateral foveal hypoplasia in an eight-year-old girl who presented to the ophthalmology department due to poor vision in both eyes. Clinical examination revealed bilateral nystagmus, decreased vision, as well as iris transillumination. Dilated fundus examination indicated the absence of light reflex around the foveal area and optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging exhibited the absence of the fovea centralis depression. These findings, in addition to the patient's light-colored hair and skin complexion, raised suspicion for albinism. The

A NOVEL TECHNIQUE FOR SUBRETINAL HEMATOMA MIGRATION: Directing the Lesion Toward Artificial Retinal Detachment.

PURPOSE: To investigate a new method for controlling the direction of subretinal hematoma migration during tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) treatment by selecting the tPA injection site. METHODS: Retrospective, interventional case series. An artificial retinal detachment was created by subretinal injection of tPA into the healthy lower retina of 18 patients, temporal to the fovea. The posterior pole of the detached retina was continuous with the subretinal hematoma, allowing tPA to access the lesion. After tPA infusion, the vitreous cavity was filled with SF 6 gas, and the surgery was concl

Foveation dynamics in congenital nystagmus. II: Smooth pursuit.

It has been shown that, during 5 seconds of fixation, an individual with congenital nystagmus (CN) can repeatedly (beat-to-beat) foveate (SD = 12.87 minarc) and maintain low retinal slip velocities (SD = 118.36 minarc/sec). Smooth pursuit data from several CN subjects showed that eye velocities during these foveation intervals approximated target velocity. Despite some claims that CN is caused by absent or "reversed" smooth pursuit, those with CN hardly ever experience oscillopsia or exhibit any accompanying symptoms of such deficits in pursuit; they are able to master sports requiring trackin

Multi-res: An interface for improving reading without central vision.

Loss of sharp foveal vision, as is inherent to Macular Degeneration (MD), severely impacts reading. One strategy for preserving patients' reading ability involves a one-by-one serial visual presentation (SVP) of words, whereby words are viewed extrafoveally. However, the method is limited as patients often retain the natural tendency to foveate words, thus bringing those words in the scotomal region. Additionally, SVP offers no compensation for the fact that orthographic input is degraded outside the fovea. Addressing these issues, here we tested a novel interface wherein texts are presented w
