Solar retinopathy and foveomacular retinitis.

The visual disturbances caused by looking into the sun or a solar eclipse have been known for many years. Recently, there have been discussions about whether or not solar retinopathy is a distinct clinical entity or identical to the disease termed foveomacular retinitis. A series of 36 patients has been evaluated at Letterman Army Medical Center with the ophthalmoscopic appearance compatible with both conditions in various stages of the disease. By use of clinical history, funduscopy, visual fields, Amsler Grid, color acuity testing, color fundus photography, and fluorescein dye studies, it is

Foveomacular retinitis as a result of ocular contusion.

Foveomacular retinitis is typically associated with eclipse burns. However a macular hole similar to that seen in cases of solar retinopathy, may be observed after ocular contusion or after whiplash injury. The case histories of 3 men, who sustained an ocular contusion and subsequently developed as aspect typical for foveomacular retinopathy, are described.

Histopathologic features of adult-onset foveomacular pigment epithelial dystrophy.

We studied the clinical and histopathologic characteristics of the eyes obtained after death from a patient with adult-onset foveomacular pigment epithelial dystrophy. The pigmentation seen in the central fovea corresponded histologically to a hyperplastic clump of retinal pigment epithelium. The pale yellow rim surrounding the central pigmentation corresponded histologically to dense periodic acid-Schiff-positive material underlying thinned, atrophic retinal pigment epithelium. Fluorescence microscopy demonstrated homogeneous autofluorescence in the retinal pigment epithelium that was similar

Lipoidal degeneration of the retinal pigment epithelium.

Vacuolation of the retinal pigment epithelium in the foveomacular region of aging rhesus monkey eyes was re-examined with the eyes initially fixed in osmium tetroxide to retain the alcohol-soluble lipid. All vacuoles were found to be completely occupied by lipid material. Similar cells were positive to oil red O. The vacuolation of the pigment epithelial cell is considered to be a form of lipoidal degeneration.

Molecular analysis of foveoschisis in females reveals a novel case of segmental uniparental disomy in X-linked retinoschisis.

BACKGROUND: Foveoschisis refers to the splitting of retinal layers involving the macula that may have different causes with variable structural-functional natural histories. Idiopathic cases are seen in the absence of inherited or acquired predisposing conditions and referred to as stellate nonhereditary idiopathic foveomacular retinoschisis (SNIFR). Our study aimed to clinically and genetically characterize females presenting with foveoschisis (including affected male siblings where present). METHODS: Five patients (3 females and 2 males) from 3 consanguineous families presenting with foveos

Vitelliform maculopathy in MELAS syndrome.

PURPOSE: We present a unique case of foveomacular vitelliform lesions in a patient with metabolic encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes (MELAS). OBSERVATIONS: After performing large panel next generation sequencing genetic testing, there was no likely alternative genetic etiology for vitelliform maculopathy in this patient. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPORTANCE: We present a rare case of a visually asymptomatic pediatric patient with MELAS and vitelliform maculopathy, which may be part of the spectrum of retinal manifestations in MELAS. Pediatric-onset vitelliform maculopathy in M

Fovea Plana and Solar Retinopathy in a Child: OCT and OCTA Findings.

This report presents a pediatric case of bilateral fovea plana and right solar retinopathy, using optical coherence tomography and optical coherence tomography angiography findings to evaluate the effects of these conditions on retinal structure and vasculature. The findings underscore the diagnostic utility of these imaging modalities in assessing concurrent retinal disorders and demonstrate that, despite the involvement of the outer retinal layers in solar retinopathy, the retinal and choroidal vascular structures were unaffected. Vitelliform lesions and choroidal changes in chorioretinal disorders: pathophysiological insights and clinical implications.

This narrative review aims to explore the correlation between choroidal thickness (CT), broader choroidal changes, and the development and progression of vitelliform lesions, with a focus on their potential modulatory role-whether primary or secondary- through mechanisms involving choriocapillaris (CC) and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) dysfunction. CT was found to be significantly increased in various vitelliform maculopathies, including adult-onset foveomacular vitelliform dystrophy (AOFVD), Best disease, autosomal recessive bestrophinopathy, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and pac

Adult-Onset Foveomacular Vitelliform Dystrophy With Unilateral Presentation: A Case Series.

Adult-onset foveomacular vitelliform dystrophy (AOFVD) is a rare condition affecting the macula that presents diagnostic and management challenges due to its varied manifestations and clinical overlap with other retinal disorders. As vitelliform lesions can occur in various conditions, such as Best disease and age-related macular degeneration, clinical presentation, multimodal imaging findings, and genetic testing can aid in accurate diagnosis. Although AOFVD typically affects both eyes, unilateral involvement can occur. This study presents four cases of unilateral AOFVD in female patients age
