BACKGROUND: Asthma is a common respiratory disease characterized by airflow obstruction caused by inflammation and narrowing of the airways. Nitric oxide is a gas that is present at low levels in the lungs, but that is elevated in the presence of airway inflammation. Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) testing may help in the diagnosis and management of asthma by measuring the amount of nitric oxide in the breath. We conducted a health technology assessment of FeNO testing for the diagnosis and management of asthma in children and adults, which included an evaluation of the accuracy, effect

Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) is an internationally recognized biomarker for type 2 airway inflammation. With the increasing promotion and widespread use of FeNO testing in China, Chinese experts have previously published consensus regarding FeNO measurement principles and clinical applications for adults and children respectively. However, in clinical practice, due to insufficient understanding of the detection principles, quality control requirements, and standardized operational procedures, questions have been raised on FeNO measurement's accuracy and clinical significance, which i

BACKGROUND: Asthma is a common disease characterized by chronic inflammation of the lower airways, bronchial hyperactivity, and (reversible) airway obstruction. The Global Initiative of Asthma Guideline recommends a flowchart to diagnose asthma with first-step spirometry with reversibility and a bronchial challenge test (BPT) with histamine or methacholine as a second step [1]. The BPT is considered burdensome, time-consuming for patients and staff, can cause side effects, and is expensive. In addition, this test strongly encumbers lung function capacity. Elevated Nitric Oxide (NO) is associat

To evaluate the relationship between fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), asthma control test (ACT), and spirometry measurements in individuals with asthma receiving treatment, a cross-sectional study was conducted involving 47 diagnosed asthmatic patients. FeNO levels were measured using Eversens Evernoa FeNO, ACT scores were recorded, and spirometry (pre- and post-bronchodilator) was conducted. Correlations between these parameters were analyzed using Pearson's correlation and t-tests. The study found no statistically significant correlation between FeNO and spirometry parameters [forced

BACKGROUND: Compared with methacholine challenge, exhaled nitric oxide is less expensive, is performed as a simpler point-of-care maneuver, and may provide treatment guiding information.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether exhaled nitric oxide levels can predict the outcome of methacholine challenge in patients without obvious baseline obstruction.
METHODS: This retrospective database and medical record review included adults presenting to a tertiary care center from November 1, 2009, through August 31, 2013, who underwent methacholine challenge and exhaled nitric oxide measurement within 2 week

Serial measurements of fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) at home and at work have been described to provide complementary information for the diagnosis of occupational asthma (OA) when specific inhalation challenge (SIC) is missing or doubtful. We describe two cases in which serial FeNO measurements enabled the detection of probable OA after complex exposures. A 25-year-old industrial painter with exposure to a variety of paints suffered from work-related airway symptoms for five years. Lung function was normal, and she was not atopic. SIC with hexamethylene diisocyanate was negative. A 4

Asthma is a common and heterogeneous disease characterized by lower airway inflammation and airflow limitation. Critical factors in asthma management include establishing an accurate diagnosis and ensuring appropriate selection and dosage of antiinflammatory therapies. Most patients with asthma exhibit type 2 inflammation, with increased IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13 signalling, often with associated eosinophilia. Identifying lower airway eosinophilia with sputum induction improves asthma outcomes, but is time-consuming and costly. Increased type 2 inflammation leads to upregulation of nitric oxide (N

This retrospective study evaluated the clinical value of fractional exhaled nitric oxide in predicting glucocorticoid response in patients with acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Based on the critical value of fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) levels ≥25 ppb at admission, patients were categorized into two groups: the high FeNO group (n = 61) and the low FeNO group (n = 61). All patients received standard basic treatment, which included inhaled corticosteroids (ICS), short-acting β2 receptor agonists (SABA), and short-acting anticholinergic drugs (SAMA). The tre

Asthma, a multifaceted chronic inflammatory disorder, concerns more than 300 million people worldwide. Recent developments have classified asthma into predominantly Type 2 (T2) high and T2 low categories. Specific biomarkers, more so for T2 inflammation, determine the nature of inflammation. Fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) has been presented as a reliable and non-invasive biomarker of T2, eosinophilic, airway inflammation. The synthesis of nitric oxide (NO) occurs through three isoforms of nitric oxide synthase (NOS), with inducible NOS being predominantly expressed in inflammatory cond

Asthma occurs frequently as a comorbid condition in many patients presenting with common otolaryngology conditions, such as allergic rhinitis and chronic sinusitis with nasal polyps. The classic presentation of asthma includes symptoms of wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness but can include other symptoms such as cough. The diagnosis is made mainly through history, although pulmonary function testing, spirometry, fractional exhaled nitric oxide, and impulse oscillometry may also prove helpful.

OBJECTIVE: The current gold standard for diagnosing eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis (ECRS) is tissue biopsy, but due to its invasive nature, there is a need for clinical diagnosis in outpatient settings or presurgical evaluations.
DATA SOURCES: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science, and Scopus up to July 2024.
REVIEW METHODS: Compared the fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) levels between ECRS and non-ECRS patients. The risk of bias across studies was evaluated utilizing the ROBINS-I tool.
RESULTS: Twelve studies comprising 1159 participants w
